William Carvalho

Was not impressed with him in this game, americans looked very dangerous and very playing past holding zone rather easily in the second half until they scored. But overall he was not bad, he is only 22, so i think he could be a good addition for us.

Yea, he can be better than Fellaini. But I can't see him improving our midfield for this season if his performance is like Fellaini + pace. 30 million or more for that performance then I don't think he's worth it at the moment.

I'm sure it was his fault for just jogging back when Bradley is clearly free. Unless William's role today isn't a defensive midfield or deeplying midfield then it wasn't completely his fault. But still he needs to take a blame for that

About the goal, after seeing it again You're right he should've done alot better.

On the comparison with Fellaini; I think that William is alot better suited for the DM role than Fellaini. He's better on the ball, better passing, as strong but more mobile and a lot less clumsy. He'd be a long-term signing and if we'd buy him it's quite possible that we'd have a possible Yaya or Vieira on our hands. whereas I don't see any future here for Fellaini. I'd happily see us sell Fellaini to soften the purchase of William as he seems just as good currently while having alot more potential and would suit our system better.

Was solid but the money they are asking is ridiculous. It's more of a price for the finished product, not someone who's had basically 1 full season of first team football.
This kind of deal is more and more becoming the norm though. Purchasing players for extortionate fees who are nowhere near the finishing article, purely because they have an enormity of potential. It's similar to the Shaw fiasco and essentially a long-term investment.

First time I've actually watched him live. Thought he was good against USA when he came on. I have no issues with him on the ball. Passed it well, showed some nice, neat touches and control, however, I expected a lot more off it, especially for a holding midfielder He seems to trot around quite a lot, when really I expect defensive midfielders to be a bit more dogged. Obviously one, or even half a game isn't enough to judge him on, but I feel we need to add a bit more dynamism to our midfield, and judging by William's performance off the ball against USA, i'm not sure he'd be the guy to give it us.

Why does every big black midfielder get likened to Vieira and Toure? He isn't much like either. He's a holding midfielder, neither of the above were. People that criticise his lack of forward runs really don't understand the concept of a holding midfielder.

I think he needs to close down opponents faster. Not really with more pace, because I don't think he has that much of it, but react faster. Only blip in his game at the moment, in my opinion, he can't look so off against counters when playing in that position. His touch is amazing, and he holds the ball as good as the best.

He didn't really have a good game today [I've seen lots of him] and I think that's probably because he was a bit nervous, he's a young player and it's his first world cup, he's very good, better than what he's shown today, he's not a 30m player or whatever is being quoted about.

It's silly, isn't it? Especially the Toure comparison.
Will Carvalho ever be a player who can score free kicks, and curl shots into the top corner four or five times a season?
Almost certainly not, and if people are expecting that, they'll be disappointed.

I think you're overdoing it a bit. His touch isn't 'amazing', Verratti's touch is 'amazing', Carvalho's is good. He can come up with a couple of good turns every now and then, but he spends most of his time with the ball in quite a bit of space playing passes that aren't very challenging.

Neither is Shaw, but like him he has the potential to be one of the best in his position.

Well, I'm a fan :)

But I think he deals with pressure when on the ball extremely well, and in that I think he's unlike any Portuguese midfielder I remember. It's probably in that context that I risk overrating him. I'm not comparing him to Toure, but to Meireles, Veloso, Maniche, Costinha. He's the sort of player we never had.

So he's a Makelele type? ;)

Well, you can say that for a lot of players. We can't afford to be paying such large sums for "potential" when we can get some players who are of higher quality for somewhere close to that. If Shaw wasn't English, no one would be willing to pay 27m for him either.

He has a touch of class about him. You can just tell he's going to improve and become quite a player.

Really impressed by him today. He can play at a much higher level. The most composed player on the pitch tonight....

I thought he looked decent when he came but needs to be more aware of runners. He's way overpriced at the moment though, especially for a team who need ready to go CM's.

Considering that Van Gaal Will most likely only be here for 3-5 years max (i'd hope for more if everything works out) i'd rather we built a team for the long term. The ready to go players like Vidal, Schweinsteiger etc won't last much longer than Van Gaal which could put us in a position in a few years where the next manager once again might have to rebuild the squad.

He looks very comfortable in deep-lying role, although I see him as a pure defensive midfielder. I do think that he would be useful for us, but only in a midfield of 3.

He has composure, good tackler, nice short passing (haven’t seen much od long passes), knows how to find a way out of trouble. The only problem is he seems pretty slow but maybe it’s just my impression.

People really need to stop comparing him to Fellaini. They are not look alike, not at all. The main difference is that Carvalho knows how to position himself on the pitch, very natural in that manner. Fellaini does not and I think it ends this discussion.

I cannot see us going anywhere near him. Under Moyes, i had the feeling this was nearly done. Since he left the trail has went cold.

People can forget this one - he aint coming here.

Would welcome him but it's a stupid price.

He is a big Ben Pearson. No need going close to breaking our transfer record on this guy.

What trail? going by the players that the media have been linking us with since LVG has taken over, they know feck all about our transfer activity. If you are to buy into our apparent 'trail', we're signing Nigel De Jong and Vermaelen, who has recently denied any link.

Our press may not know but you can be sure Portuguese press would be all over it if we were still actively pursuing the player. They were at various points throughout the season but now have nothing. In fact, the player now looks set to stay at sporting - I'm sure our resident sporting fans will provide an update. My bet is we won't be in for him.

26m for Fellaini was a stupid price, not paying top dollar for what looks to be a real talent. Unfortunately though, no matter what we do, people will moan.

Since Moyes left i think United dropped the interest. By what our president has been saying to the media, i think he will stay another year and do a Champions League campaign. The only clubs getting linked with Carvalho in the recent past are Real Madrid and Juventus. No english club interest reported in the last weeks.

Wasn't impressed with his defensive work yesterday. He made some lovely passes though and looked great on the ball.

Well it´s difficult to look impressive in that tactically chaotic enviroment of Paulo Bento. He did good enough considering how bad our team looked. He´s pretty good defensively at Sporting, where we had a tactically strict manager in a team with good defensive organization. It was his first game in a World cup, in an under fire team with serious limitations. He did alright, better than some player with more responsability and experience.

I can only judge from what I see and his defensive work imo wasn't good enough. Which was surprising given how people in this thread have been raving about it. Looked impressive going forward though and looked composed on the ball, his talent is obvious to see.

First time I've seen him play. You can't judge a player on 45 minutes, but I thought he played well. One to keep an eye on.

First time I've seen him play today. He looks like a fantastic player to have whilst in possession of the ball, very neat and tidy has the potential to start off attacks and generally very elegant. Whilst he showed times of being a great tackler, what concerned me was how pedestrian he was to close people down or generally react to the danger- he almost reminded me of Alex Song when he use to play for us in that regard. However you do have to take into consideration that Portgual's left hand side was being horrible exposed all match and he was probably worried about that as well as tracking his own man. Hope Portugal go through because I'm interested to see more of him.

He was quite impressive last night. Won a lot of possession back in the midfield, could have been handy for us. Too bad he was a Moyesy target.

I thought he was brilliant last night. The first half was very scrappy, with both teams playing 3 in midfield and s a result neither really had much possession, but once he came on, he tidied things up, got control of the game and played some great balls out to the wing. He doesn't look to have the most expansive passing game based on last night's performance, but more like Carrick's where occasionally he can play a defence splitting pass but most often he'll play the ball into space for the full backs to run on to.

He seems a great tackler too, very clean and efficient and uses his long legs to almost reach around the opposition players' legs and nab the ball.
