William Carvalho

I doubt the dippers can afford his release clause..and have they given up on "the Messi of DM's" Lucas?

I have some doubts also but O Jogo is usually reliable in what concerns rumours (not saying it will happen though). This Carvalho situation is a right mess. The rumours Mónaco wants our manager (plus a player) are also causing alot of confusion. If there isn´t a clarification regarding our manager i doubt we will see news about Carvalho before the World Cup (except if any club pays the clause).

If this kid has bags of potential and could turn out like Yaya Toure then why the hell are we not still in for him? Instead we're planning on going for Strootman who we could've got last summer for half the price Roma will make us pay, not to mention he's currently recovering from a serious knee injury which will have an impact on his play and mobility in the future. This is gonna be a bad summer imo.

Wenger should take the Monaco job and give himself a few seasons of chasing trophies

Your optimism is inspiring.

Carvalho is more defensive, like an anchorman. Strootman is more a box-to-box player.

Strootman is the better player at the moment, he's had two good seasons at PSV and a good first season at Roma (albeit he missed the second half due to his injury) but he is a couple of years older than Carvalho. I think Strootman has more to his game overall.
This is Carvalho's breakthrough season, and while there would be a huge risk in spending £30m+ on a relatively unproven player, he has the potential to be one of the best midfielders on the planet. I'd love both of them at United!

I agree about the risk. Look how lamela turned out for spurs or veron for us.

Man i wouldnt believe what those videos show. They are like film trailers or car commercials. also he is playing in a different league.

Surely Liverpool don't have this kind of cash, even with the Champions League.

He's young enough that I think he'd come here for the bigger wages and hopefully play in the Champions League in the future.

If Liverpool sign Carvalho it actually weakens Liverpool. Gerrard will have to play elsewhere on the pitch.

Gerrard is old now. They need to find a new replacement. But Gerrard isn't originally defensive midfield, he played in that role this season because none in the Liverpool has capable doing that (Lucas the injury prone). They need two midfield Gerrard replacement and a defensive midfield. Ever since Alonso and Mascherano leaves Liverpool, I never seen Liverpool having a proper defensive midfield.

Gerrard has been a revelation in that role after having a few mediocre seasons in central midfield, and on right. He still has a few more years in the engine.

There is no guarantee a 34 years old Gerrard can play every games in Champion League and EPL.

His performances there this season have been overrated. Henderson's work rate has regularly covered for him, and it's no accident that Henderson's ban coincided exactly with Liverpool letting their title charge slip.

I agree and Henderson is probably the man who improve Liverpool midfield this season. I don't rate Gerrard that high this season. He's not better than the previous season.

All gone a bit quiet
perhaps van gaal wants strootman???
I wouldnt mind either but if big willy c then lets do it before he has a good world cup and it becomes a bidding war... we dont traditionally fair well in those

I think I'd prefer Carvalho over Strootman. Strootman's knee injury concerns me.

I hope we're not spending £30m on this lad.

He definitely can't. We should be aiming for 30-40 games a season maximum out of him.

I'm a bit surprised the majority on here seemed to think Gundogan was too much of a risk because of his back problem, but most seem to think Strootman is relatively risk free because he has a vague return date. I'm still leaning towards Carvalho personally because of his age, potential and lack of any injury.

Strootman would surely be a January target anyway because of the injury.

Nobody seems to have a clue about Gundogans injury with murmurs that he's struggling to walk/gets paralysis etc.

Strootman has a serious injury but quite often these days it's a simple surgical procedure and 6 months in the gym.

Gundogan denied the paralysis rumours and has said he expects to be fit for early next season, if not ready for the start of the season. Admittedly his injury has seemed to be shrouded in a bit of mystery though, and I take your point that Strootman's is a more common injury so the rehabilitation is more predictable.

Anyway to not derail the thread talking about Gundogan and Strootman, really my point was that Carvalho is a much safer bet fitness wise. If we're talking around 35m for Carvalho and 40m for Strootman the values are pretty similar and it'll just come down to Carvalho's potential. From LVG's point of view though, if he can't see Carvalho working in his system then that's that I suppose.

I think LVG is keen on Strootman, so I don't see this transfer happening. I would take Carvalho and Kevin in a 4-2-3-1, it would provide our attackers a nice platform to work on.

On the birghtside that'd stop him going to Liverpool at least

These damm russian oligarchs are big fans of portuguese football. Our manager lasted one year. I´m completely gutted :(

That's probably the one thing I under appreciate supporting a club like United. Not having to worry about your manager getting pinched. My thoughts and prayers are with you if it's true!

Thanks mate. It is true. I lost count of the players who have left us to go on to have major internacional careers. It´s the nature of our league. The worst part is that Jardim will surely move for some of our players with the backing of his russian oligarch President. Depressing summer ahead and this when we have qualified to the Champions League. There goes our stability. But i trust our President. He will know what to do.

As gutted as I am to see Jardim go after the fantastic season he had if the rumors are true that Marco Silva will be our coach then it makes me feel a bit better because Marco Silva look like a great coach the work he has done at estoril is remarkable even after losing all of his best players in the summer add to that that Silva likes to play a attractive brand of football and even with estoril he went head to head with Porto Sporting and Benfica which not every team in our league can do his wins at the Dragao and Alvalade show that I'm very confident Marco Silva will be a great coach for Sporting and have success.....I can't thank Jardim enough for the work he did tho no Sporting fan after last season would have thought we would finish Runners up this year

Possible blow for United:

Portuguese media today reporting that William Carvalho is not a player LVG is interested in and that other clubs that are interested are City,Chelsea, and Liverpool

Liverpool need to increase the size of their squad. Buying one player for 30m is exactly the opposite of what they should be doing.

They risk a serious shortage of players, considering the size of their squad.

Delighted with this news. Never wanted him.

He seemed to be the first option in Moyes' wishlist (god it is painful writing his name in this forum), but you don't hear anything about LVG wanting him. That interest seems to have switched to the likes of Kroos and Strootman, which is by no means a bad thing. Carvalho may still be the C of LVG's ABC wishlist though, unless someone like Fabregas is there.
