William Carvalho

I think he was a Moyes target. Probably too much of a punt at that price for United to pursue, looks like we're going for more proven players. Even Shaw is proven to some extent.

Actually in terms of top flight football experience Shaw had it slightly more than Carvalho despite being much younger (if we don't count the loan moves).

It does seem we have gone all quiet on him, shame really, he seems ideal for us.

I agree, I think LVG would rather bring someone from Bundesliga or Eredivisie than from Portugal (rightly so IMO), I doubt Carvalho will be his target from the beggining.

Yeah. You can't trust those players from Portugal.

Having said that, a good World Cup and United will no doubt scramble about trying to sign him and end up with egg on their faces. It's guaranteed once a summer.

I understand your point, but it is well known that you never buy based on a world cup performance in general. One thing that is demanded by united is consistency and playing one cracker of a game and then disappearing doesnt cut it. Im not saying carvalho is bad, but for the amount of money being mentioned it is a gamble

Eredivisie? I can obviously understand the Bundesliga but the Eredivisie? The same league where their clubs usually lose to portuguese clubs in the european competitions? Not to mention their national team.

About Carvalho, not a mention from an United scout on this last match. I really think he was a Moyes target. Can´t see this happening. And in a bizarre twist, there are rumours today that Monaco wants our manager. If they get him, i can see an offer for Carvalho from their behalf since it was Jardim who "launched" him on our first team.

Better knowledge, probably the issue behind that reasoning.

On that perspective, i can see his point. In terms of quality, not really.

Fully agree, but managers to tend to prefer players from leagues they know better, even if they've not managed them directly, they probably follow them a lot more closely for a myriad of reasons. And not necessarily a bad idea, if they think the increased empathy and understanding can make up for relatively less ability. Look at Mourinho for example. Seems to always have a tight core of players with which he relates easily.

Well, I don't want to discuss which league is better etc. VG knows both german and dutch football, while I’m not sure he follows Portugal league, that’s why I’m not sure if he would go for Carvalho just because club scouted him 20 times this season. He might want to look elsewhere first, that’s my point. It doesn’t mean we won’t get him eventually- but surely it won’t be done quickly IMO.

Anyway, what’s wrong with dutch national team? Serious question, I don’t watch them to be honest. It’s funny because Portugal NT is pretty horrible every time I watch them.
EDIT: Pretty much what Arruda said, cheers.

Yeah i didn´t get your point at first.

There´s nothing wrong with the dutch national team, they just lose to us all the time. I hope the trend continues. Well i hope we keep playing horrible and keep qualifying and reaching the semi´s of the big competitions

It´s an obvious point. I didn´t get his reasoning but you are absolutely right about this.

Now looking at it, your result is pretty decent recently. It was probably my impression from some qualification games or sth. By the way, what do you expect from your NT this year?

Again i misinterpreted your post, sry. If you watched our national team during the qualifying stages for the world cup, you are right, we were horrible. I expect us to pass group stage, everything else is a bonus. Our lack of a decent striker and our out of form wingers prevent us from aiming higher. I´m also fearing Ronaldo´s physical condition. He did struggle in terms of injuries in the last months at Real.

Ok, I share your opinion.

Out of interest, how come you Sporting chaps all signed up here? It's lovely having you but it does seem slightly weird :D

Monaco need to feck off.

I have been lurking the forum since the Ronaldo days and although i´m a die hard Sporting fan, i have a soft spot for United. Also when they prevented newbies from viewing the General and i couldn´t follow RN7 doge thread, i stop being lazy and "worked" for promotion.

Who wants to go to Monaco? More atmosphere at a wake, or an Arsenal match

For the same reason Falcão, Moutinho and Rodriguez did...€

It must be so demoralising though for a player with any pride or ambition to play for a club that gets fewer fans than most third-tier English football clubs

I completely agree with you but i don´t think they care.

The same league players such as van de Vaart, Strootman, Van Persie, RvN, De Jong, Van Bommel, Kluivert, Park Ji-Sung, etc etc emerged from.

A league doesn't have to have the best teams to have great players. Ajax & PSV have some great youth atm - the teams on a whole aren't as strong as the mega-rich of Europe but they have players that will eventually be poached by those same teams that beat them annually.

I actually follow that league a bit and currently there is no one playing there right now who would definitely improve us.

De Jong, van Bommel? The amount of talent that has left Portugal in the last few years is far more impressive. Kluivert and van Nistelrooy are both retired already, Strootman and Eriksen are the two players who have left Eredivisie lately to make an impact in a better environment.

Other than the reasons pointed above (better empathy/knowledge) there's no reason to suggest a manager will be worse off if he scouts in Portugal rather than in Holland, which is what was being discussed.

If throwing in a random mix including retired or washed out players helps the argument then I don't think Moutinho, Falcao, Di Maria, Figo, Rui Costa, Pepe, Ricardo Carvalho, Ronaldo would do badly in an 8 vs 8 against that lot you chose.

Daily something (cant remember) is saying we have cooled or interest and liverpool are now interested.

Whats the take on strootman? Havent seen him enough to comment. says van gaal wants him. Better or worse than carvalho?

Carvalho is more defensive, like an anchorman. Strootman is more a box-to-box player.

Strootman is the better player at the moment, he's had two good seasons at PSV and a good first season at Roma (albeit he missed the second half due to his injury) but he is a couple of years older than Carvalho. I think Strootman has more to his game overall.
This is Carvalho's breakthrough season, and while there would be a huge risk in spending £30m+ on a relatively unproven player, he has the potential to be one of the best midfielders on the planet. I'd love both of them at United!

me too.

Liverpool? I haven´t read anything in our media about that. I doubt Liverpool would pay what were asking.

O Jogo reported it. Seems true as for the first time in ages there weren't any scouts to watch him

Yeah, i just looked for it and "O Jogo" did report it. They are usually the most reliable of all the three sport newspapers in Portugal.
