William Carvalho

Apparently Mourinho's willing to let Ramires go so if that's the case then it seems plausible that they're in for Carvalho. Matic and Carvalho would provide one hell of a solid base.

He is? Strange, Ramires is the type of player Mourinho usually appreciates. Perhaps it might have something to do with Ramires disciplinary record.

First off I would like to say hi to everyone I recently got promoted :)

Recent reports In Portugal suggest that Chelsea are willing to offer Marko Marin in a player plus cash deal for William other reports also suggest that Inter Milan are very interested in William...on the inter rumor i don't think they have a chance of getting William he Will almost certainly go to the EPL but the Chelsea one is a different story I don't think Marko Marin is a player that interests Sporting I think William would be a good fit to United and I don't feel Chelsea need him but if Chelsea were to offer a more attractive player or players then it can be something that might interest Sporting a player like Thorgan Hazard would be a good option or even Patrick Van Anholt but I'm not sure if Chelsea would negotiate a deal like that ....nonetheless the cash + Marko Marin and inter Milan interest is the latest news in the Portuguese media

Welcome to the mains. :) Always cool to have fans from other leagues in here. I don't know a lot about Carvalho but I am starting to wonder if he was a Moyes choice and that this is stalling because the new manager may have different ideas for a CM.

Hazard and Willian on either side of Oscar in that setup and you've got a belting side there. All they then need is a decent forward and they'd be a hell of a side. Lets hope we get in there quick...
That would be a team to fear especially under Mourinho

Agree, it would look like a Mourinho side - pace, power and hard working players. I find the Ramires a bit odd, he has been excellent for them.

Thank you :) well in my opinion if United have scouted him in apparent 20 or so odd times then he is one of their main targets

Next Sporting home game will probably give us more info about that. If there is still an United scout on the stands, perhaps there is still interest even with Moyes departure.

They're too similar for my taste and I think Mourinho thinks so too. A double pivot is at his best when one is really good at opening up the game. Like Dortmund with Gündogan and Bender, or Real Madrid with Khedira and Xabi Alonso. Matic and Carvalho both have a good passing range but they're not that creative.

Is there any indication in Portugal Utd have went "cold" on the player? The Chelsea and inter rumours may be an agent fuelled attempt to flush out utd intentions.

Fwiw, if van Gaal becomes manager then I don't see us going for him.

I think their still will be I don't think United want to see William go to a rival especially with all the interest they have shown

Not really there were United scouts in our last game vs Belenenses and in the rumors about William and inter it stated that United along with those clubs were interested but we will see until the end of the season to see if anything changes

I always felt Strootman and William would make a great partnership I would love to see that

Personally I feel with Sporting in the CL they have a great chance on holding onto William for at Least one more season but then again anything can happen

The question here is, was the interest potentiated by Moyes? If so the possible lack of United scouts in the match will prolly gives us some indications.

This isn´t a question of not wanting the player joining a rival, this is a question whether the next Manager wants a player like Carvalho or will come with his own ideas and player shortlist.

I definitely think we are interested but given the huge price I imagine we'd want to make sure the new manager is as interested as Moyes was before pulling the trigger.

I would hope that while Moyes may have initiated the interest that our scouts who have been sent to watch Carvalho so many times will be an influence on the clubs decision as to whether we continue to try and get him.

I hope to see more of this if he comes to United. Only giggs seems capable of making such passes this season from our midfield from what I can remember.

there was a stat shown on MOTD. I think it was Carrick/Cleverley/Fellaini and they all had 0 assists and 0 through balls all season. That is just unacceptable.

I feel he would be a player the new manager would want ...of course we dont know who that manager is if it is Van Gael then I could probably see him going for a player like Strootman but then again like you said the next game/games for Sporting will show if their is still interest

I saw that, completely dreadful stat that is but thats down to set of play tbh. Carrick last season had the licence to advance up and push up the pressure in oppositions half and last season he was brilliant, but this season he's been playing so deep and didnt adventure up forward.. plus felliani & cleverly are crap.

Nooo.. Why not ? I think Louis appreciates intelligent defensive midfielders like Carvalho. He played Rijjkaard, Cocu, Gustavo in the past who had fairly similar styles. Why would Chelsea need him anyway ? They already have Matic.. :(

Ramires has been terrible this season for them. Can't pass, can't shoot, is a foul machine, and has been suspended for like 8 matches this season. You can understand why they'd be shopping him around. I heard a rumor that Juventus are the ones who want him.

I agree with a poster above, Carvalho doesn't really look like the kind of midfielder they'd be after. They have their powerhouse DM in Matic. They need a more creative player. On the other hand, Matic is an excellent passer and doesn't mind going forward at all. As it has been mentioned, Carvalho does look like a Mourinho player.

A Matic/Carvalho pairing would be an enormous problem for opposition sides to deal with.

I think he'll want a more dynamic player - strootman. Plus a ball player - kroos type.

Not a massive Strootman fan. No doubt he's a decent player, but even from the little I've seen of Carvalho I prefer him.

But if he can magic Kroos over here, he can do what he wants with the other positions!

I'm not really sure of his sources but it's what one of my mates who's a Chelsea fan told me.

It's a crazy thought, but it's fully believable. Not only that, but I can see us selling a player or two freeing up more money.

To be honest we could afford to sell quite a number of players if we don't have the added congestion of European fixtures next season, without immediately replacing them. As in opt for quality over quantity for one season only, assuming we get top 4 next season. Not sure this would work in reality though, as you'd be stuck with those high salaries for years, and would need to revert back to the current sized squad for CL thereafter. But perhaps we'd be ok financially with this enormous kit deal coming in, and the sponsorship from random Serbian banks and god knows what else.

I think we're pretty sound financially at the moment. But it would make footballing and financial sense to trim a bit of the fat. Giggs, Anderson and Ferdinand will surely all no longer be on our books (as players) next season. Hopefully Young and Fellaini could join them. No sense in throwing good money after bad. Young's supposed to be on a pretty hefty contract which he in no way merits at the moment.

Yea he is capable, but this season, it seems like he has forgotten how to make such passes . Which is surprising if you can remember the season he had in 2012/2013 and some of the passes he made then.
Carrick has been badly misused this season and it's one of my biggest gripes. It's clear he was played far too deep. Dropping almost into a third CM at times. Not able to dictate our passing game or make his incisive passes further up the pitch. I don't hold him responsible for the way he was deployed, and how ineffective that subsequently made him, at all.

I do not believe that should stop him from making the progressive killer passes. He seemed so casual and unwilling to take as much risk this season compared to last season. I am sure our manager did not tell Carrick to stop making any penetrative passes to our strikers. Hopefully, Carvalho,(if acquired) will give him much needed competition next season to improve on the dire season he had.

The strikers pushing high up and Carrick sitting deep as f*ck would prevent that though. The space between Carrick and the forwards was massive under Moyes, his main remit was to spread the ball wide. We predominantly played down the flanks. Statistically we are the team that has played the smallest % through the middle in the league. That wasn't coincidence.

I was at OT on Saturday and one of the first things I said to my dad was that the shackles were off Carrick. He was pushing up and making those passes and it was reminiscent of his 2012/13 performances. He clearly wasn't able or comfortable enough to venture too far under Moyes, often sitting ridiculously deep and was involved in our general passing game far less.

@Sly and @SportingCP96, how much do you think he will be sold for (in case there is and there isn't a bidding war)? What is his true worth (moneywise)?
Our president is a tuff negotiator and I don't think he will begin any negotiations until at least 35M I think he will be sold by around the 37M mark i don't know if our president will be able to sell him for his buyout clause (then again it could happen our president says he won't leave for anything under the buyout clause but that is probably all talk )...as to what he Is realistically worth I would say probably 25-30M

Isn't 37M his release clause?

Any chance to get him for 20 million only + 5 million bonus?

In my eye. He's currently a 15 million until 20 million worth. His level isn't above 25 million yet. Unless I see something from him during world cup.

I don't think there is any chance of United getting him for that kind of money I'll give you an example of what our president seems to be like when it comes to negotiations ... Do you know how difficult it is to negotiate with Porto ? Well our president is pretty similar to that ...William won't be leaving Sporting I feel for anything under at least 35M and if he has a great WC and gets noticed even more on such a broader stage then that will only jack up his price .......realistically tho the money you mentioned would probably be his true worth at the moment around that 25 million mark

Can you please get the guy who sold Moutinho to Porto for half that fee back so we can buy Carvalho from him instead?
