Smalling is excellent but I'm still not sure what to make out of Jones. He could be great, he could be average.

I understand why you're not sure about Jones yet, but I see potential greatness in Jones. No, not the "Duncan Edwards" greatness somebody opined last year (a bit over the top IMHO), but right now we're watching a 20 year old defender acquit himself admirably in the English prem both as a fullback and as a midfielder, which can only be extraordinarily helpful in his development as a center back over the next 15 years.

He wasn't epic against us, but he was better than to be not memorable either. Those saying he wasn't memorable are labouring the point a but i think. He played well, was their main danger and showed raw natural ability and potential.

I'm excited when we sign young English/British players. It's part of our philosophy to have a core of young British taken in our squad, and long may it continue.

That first sentence is a bit of a mindfeck, but yeah, I agree. I certainly remember him and his constant 'chop' trick. Did it a good few times iirc.

He has put very good performances in at right back, centre back and defensive midfield this season. At 20, the lad has some talent.

Nev, Will actually didn't remember Zaha playing against us, quite a few on this thread didn't either. He did a number of purposeless trick and flicks against us, it just doesn't impress me when they have no end product.

There is raw ability there but I am skeptical if the fundamental control and technique is there for the Prem. I am getting behind the lad from now on though. Last negative post in this thread.

It was the same for Ronaldo initially as well. I'm not saying Zaha is the next 80million pound superstar but end product is something that can be developed with age. What's good is that a youngster has the courage to try those tricks against Manchester United at the risk of his team and manager giving him an earful for wasting possession, but he has the right belief in him.

I'm surprised that anyone who watched the game could forget he played against us, he showed plenty of ability and caused our defence problems when running at them quite a few times. I wasn't begging to sign him after that game, but it definitely brought him to my attention, I'd never heard of him before then.

He had a good first 20 minutes and then a good last 20. In between didn't do much but showed enough pace and skill to be considered a bright prospect.

Obviously we would have tracked him since, and he has kicked on.

Mirror/Daily Mail now reporting it could be off until the Summer as we may not get permission from the Premier League or some shit.

I swear they just keep going round in circles.

Permission for what? Surely it's a transfer window and we can sign whoever we want in that transfer window We can also loan out whoever we want too.

Yeah I know right. They are probably just coming up with excuses why it hasn't happened in any of their "24 hours" predictions.

Haven't been keeping track of this. Is it looking like we are definitely signing this kid? Or are the tabloid just writing stories

Most newspapers seem to be running with the summer arrival although I think one mentioned that the current sticking point was the fact that SAF wanted him now and Palace wants to keep him to maintain their promotion challenge.

I don't like the Ronaldo comparisons at all. In his first season he put in a MOTM performance in the FA Cup, as posted earlier in the thread. He also made the team of the tournament that summer in a major international championships. He was 19 then, Zaha is already 20. He could be frustrating, at times, but he was clearly a prodigiously gifted young player. It was noobs like Lou Macari and Alan Hansen who propagated the nonsense that he might not actually be worth it.

Why can't we agree with Place to sign him in the summer instead of loaning back?

Surely an official agreement could be reached to sign him in summer?

What if he gets injured and we back out of the deal in the summer or some other player becomes available?

That article is now two days old and was denied immediately by Palace.

I can't believe anyone that watched the came couldn't remember Zaha. He faided horribly but was excellent in the first half. He ripped whichever Da Silva twin was playing a new one.

Think it was Rafa actually...

Just checked the beeb. Both played but I'm pretty sure Zaha was on the right and he absolutely destroyed Fabio who, surprise surprise, got injured. Before that he resorted to simply trying to kick Zaha.

Fryers came on and dealt with him much better.

£15m for a Championship player would be absolutely hilarious, even by our standards.

The £15m includes performance related add ons, so if he flops it'll never reach that figure. Walcott's was £12m while Chamberlain's was reported to be £15m (both including add ons). Take into account it's a hyped English player and Manchester United, the fee isn't all that bad.

Ah ok, my apologies, Fabio injured? Hmm..

Still, from what I have seen seems largely unproven for £15 million, but nowadays I suppose its supply and demand if Carroll was £35 mil or w/e he was, then £15 for Zaha does look that bit better :)

That's what I mean though, though maybe I wasn't specific enough, it's mad how much we pay for English players, (and not just us, to be fair) it really is.

I mean feck sake, he plays in the Championship and he's 20 years old.

15m for Zaha or 25/30 for Gotze.

I think I know what I'd do.

We can all make numbers up. You're being optimistic if you think we could possibly get Gotze for £25m-£30m. Not to mention wages...

Zaha is a unknown for me. I've seen him a handful of times and I don't think he's really stood out. He's talented for sure but he's an unknown in the Premier League obviously.

That being said its exciting, nothing better than seeing a player develop and mature at our club from the guidance of the management, coaching staff and the players. The fans used to have the patience too but its modern times now and everyone is bloody impatient.

The reported £15m might well be a gamble, but we don't generally throw money away so I'm thinking it might well be an educated gamble.

Why do people care so much about transfer fees? Does it really matter? If Fergie sees a player he thinks will add something to United then I personally couldn't give a shiny shite if they cost £2mil or £20mil. What difference does it make?

Why are people quoting 15m?

Independent, Daily Telegraph, Times, Guardian and Daily Mail have all said the deal will be 12m including addons(if we pay 12m and then it'll mean that he has fulfilled his potential)

The only two outlets saying 15m is Mirror and Goal.com.

More transfer fee, more wages, more agent fees, more signing on bonus and possibly wanting to go straight to the 18.

Fergie knows how to build his squads. Its not just a case of throwing in 15-20m more.

I'm surprised we havent been linked to James Rodriguez this window though.. Fergie loves his wingers

This, this and THIS

So the Daily Mail has claimed he'll sign for us today? That's on the United site. I guess we'll find out soon enough then. I assume these rumours must have some considerable substance considering how long they've been running and the amount of them.
