Wilfried Zaha

Does this mean Nani is possibly out the door before the window closes? :(

Nani is a world class player while Zaha is a promising talent. Its like saying that we're soon selling Carrick because we've signed Powell.

Nani is too good to be selling mid season, if we had to balance the books then i would rather sell Valencia.

Watching the pics of lads arriving in Qatar and I actually can't see Fergie in them. So maybe these reports are true.

Well, yes and no. I love Smalling but if a foreign player who is as good or better (I know he's one of the best talents at CB right now) available cheaper, I'd expect the club would go for him instead. Well, that's what I would want anyway.

Don't particularly mind, but just doesn't seem like a particularly clever transfer policy.

Yeah, it's madness for an English club to try and sign up and coming young English talents in the hope of keeping a British core running through the squad. It's also a policy that has failed us in the past, what with our lack of success over recent seasons and all.

So? We spent quite a lot in the summer and were willing to stump even more of a hefty sum if they players in question didn't agree to move elsewhere (Moura, Hazard) Do you even know the finances of the club or you're just rehashing the same old crap? Penny pinching, debt, Glazers, cnuts...et al.

You know what, just shut up.

Most of the big bookmakers have suspended betting on him joining us after 'significant bets' were placed. Wouldn't be surprised to see this one wrapped up by the end of the day.

If we do get Zaha it will probably be similar in frustration to Ronaldo's first few years in a United shirt.....but with about half the talent.

I'm stunned if we pay £15 million for him, I don't care if the English card has a part to play, that doesn't mean anything to me, we have an academy to develop home players. For £15 million there are superior talents available, someone like Griezmann would be a a great option....experience in a top European league and clearly more than adaptable to the Premier League. Left footed also which is invaluable for the balance of a team.

Zaha, although blessed with pace, athleticism and balance, just does not seem to possess any real nous in his play. It's all pick up in space, run with the ball and hope to find an opening. He doesn't seem to always know what he wants to do when he gets the ball. There are all these little flicks, stepovers and tricks but they just seem cloned and unnecessary. I won't be surprised or truly disappointed if he comes, just slightly underwhelmed. It seems like a slightly lazy piece of business for the sums quoted.

Is it that time of the month again..you need to chill man!!!

yep.

though zaha might turn out ok as well. not really arsed over this. rather see zaha turn out than young. atleast zaha has age on his side.

Surprisingly, it's not our money that the club is spending, so there's no need to fret.

Well that would be silly because Young is currently twice the player Zaha is no matter what your dislike seems to be for him.

Love the way these threads always have a few people desperate to show off their encyclopaedic knowledge of world football and unmatched talent-spotting ability and understanding of the game.

Come back when you're working as a scout for United?

And I'm sure you were one of those people who said "VALUE" when we signed a pretty much unknown Ronaldo for £12 million?

Christ you can't say anything on here without upsetting someone!

I just think spending £15m on a player from the Championship is a bit risky, even if the player does look decent. As for Ronaldo I would not have called him an unknown given he played over 30 games for Sporting the previous season at a better standard of football.

Please don't compare him to Ronaldo. There is a chasm in ability between the 17 year old Ronaldo and the 20 year old Zaha.

How many people thought paying £12m for a centreback from Fulham who'd played twice since being signed from non-league Maidstone United was a stretch? Now I'd happily pay twice that for the player Smalling has and will become.

If Sir Alex and the scouts think he's worth the money, I don't know why they still get doubted. They haven't really got it wrong in recent years (not including Bebe who was signed without being scouted).

That's what they said about ronaldo back then when they compared him to quaresma.

18 years old.

The comparison being made - and which you responded to, albeit by referring to their abilities - is what people made of their relative values (and expectations) at the time they were bought. Which, unless you're Portuguese, you probably didn't know at the time.

We know a lot about Wilfred Zaha though. He is based in England, he has played against us, he had appeared for England and his games are on Sky about 7 times a season.

I have seen him play about five times and he is no where near the talent of a young Ronaldo, not even in the same ballpark.

Nevermind Ronaldo he's not even that highly rated full stop. Honestly it's a split verdict on him with a lot of Journos (counted 5 so far on Sunday Supplement alone that cant see the potential in him) thinking he's nowhere near top 4 standard. His stats (although I know this isn't everything) are pretty shocking considering he's playing second tier football aswell.

Iv said all along that he should follow Victor Moses and join a lower premier league side, if he's good enough he will get a move to a top 4 team. I wouldn't pay £15m for this guy at the moment. For £15m playing in the Championship id be expecting him to be ripping the league apart and he isn't infact some people at palace have been calling for him to be dropped since he made his England debut.

I guess im being harsh on him but Id prefer us to spend the money elsewhere, we were in for Hazard and Lucas in the summer both are 20 times better than this guy. Save the 15m and put it towards a real talent in my opinion.

Bebe was scouted, even if Fergie didn't personally vet him.

None of our financially modest 'punts' on young players in recent years (with the possible exception of Smalling) have worked out. Bebe, Diouf, Obertan, Tosic, Manucho have all failed. Buttner doesn't look likely to buck the trend either.

Typical of you to miss out Hernandez, Fabio and Rafael out of the list. But the thing would look shit with good signings though.

None of those players may have worked out at United, but their careers after leaving United have proved that there was something there. Diouf is becoming a star in Germany, Obertan is a regular in a Premier League side, Tosic is an important player for Serbia and Champions League regulars CSKA Moscow, Manucho went from Angola to a career in Spain's top flight.

The type of players you listed (generally <£5m) are really a separate category of player than those we buy for the first team and not as a player with a chance at being a squad player. They were all relatively cheap punts.

Players we spend big on are far more often than not successes. And as KM mentioned, the twins and Chicharito were also cheap signings. We paid less than £10m for the three of them. Signing them now, £10m wouldn't get you close to a single one of the three.
