Wilfried Zaha

United hardly ever make these sort of announcements/comments. This seems a done deal, or very near conclusion.

More David Gill: "But even if we did do something with Wilfried Zaha, that would be for the summer."

That's a relief I want to see how he does for the rest of the season. He's gone shite lately apparently the last thing we want to be doing is throwing 12m at Palace for him at the moment.

Maybe Zaha is a smokescreen.

I'm not sure United are really a club to do smokescreens.

What has happened though? We never used to comment on transfer speculation even if everyone knew we were after a player, yet recently we have declared our interest in pretty much every player going. New policy maybe?

I don't know how these things work, but I'd have thought buying him now and loaning him back would be the best option if we don't want competition to grow.

Judging from Gill's comments this may not be a million miles away from the truth

Yup I was thinking the same.

Btw all this we shouldn't sign him because there's no competition is a very strange way at looking things.

For the same reason Spurs bought Lennon, Arsenal bought Oxlade-Chamberlain + Walcott and Chelsea bought Moses. He might be very raw but if it is true that Wenger and Sir Alex both want him then it generally means you're looking at a British player with real potential. Ramsey, Powell, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Smalling, Jones - every one of these players looks or looked to have the potential to be a top class player. We tend to do well when we sign British players anyway. Since 2006 we've bought Carrick, Hargreaves, Smalling, Jones and Powell which is pretty good going. It's when we've went for the young foreign players we've screwed up, we've tried to find another raw, talented young winger in Tosic and Obertan and now it's time to go British. When Giggs leaves we'll need another body out wide and Valencia and Young will be 28 by that time so we need another young player to balance it out.

The importance of having those is very understated. One of the main reasons Fergie has remained dominant at the domestic level. With the academy not throwing many, Giggs/Scholes careers coming to an end, uncertainty over Fletch - adding top English/British players is very important. If Fergie and the staff thinks he is good enough then who are we to dispute them. Most have rarely watched him anyways.

Good Post.

Wait for City now to offer 20M for him. And the mandatory 200k/week wages.

That's the way Zaha, Zaha
I like the way Zaha, Zaha

I'm a little surprised people aren't more excited. We have a good record of signing British players.

Wonder if Palace gave him 45mins last night just to cup-tie him. Ie So that a buying club won't try to make the deal immediate.

He looks to be a player with a real amount of flair, can use either foot, is quick and British. He should be a very good signing for us, our history of British players is probably the best in the Premiership. Buying young British players is one thing, any club can buy the likes of Henderson and Allen, but this lad seems to be a class above them.

I guess they probably figured they'd accomplished that by playing him in the game before the replay.:)

Because it's quite a high fee and he's not been great lately. Not to mention he's only experienced Championship football. His stats aren't even that good, players like Tom Ince pretty much double everything he's done in the championship so far. I was excited for Powell being 18 and having potential, for some reason I think Zaha as failure written all over him. Id prefer him going the same way Victor Moses did and joining a mid table club, if he's good enough he will join a top side in 2-3 years.

He might have promise and potential (he looks okay from the, admittedly, small amount of highlights I've seen) but I think its a combination of the prices that have been mentioned (£20 odd million? Come on! :wenger:), the fact that he seems like another flavour of the months media hyped player, and the potential loss of Nani (leaving us with potentially Valenica, Young & Zaha) that mean people aren't anywhere near as excited as they could be.

As i've said before,we've probably struck a deal but will let him stay at Palace to the end of the season.

How can you possibly know that there is no competition for him?

It was reported in an extremely detailed newspaper report that all the other top clubs chasing this player, of which there were many, have now dropped out without making a bid.

Preparations almost complete. Prepare the white sheets!

:p

That was without doubt the most ridiculous thing I had ever seen this club do.

My favourite bit was the next bit when De Gea strolled past the gap they failed to close.

The key difference is that when we signed Smalling and Jones, there were other teams who made offers. There is no tangible 'competition' in this particular case, despite rumours (obviously coming from Palace) that there were several other clubs interested for this talented youngster.

Whilst I understand the clubs interest in the player: I feel that we have more than enough young English players and I don't perceive him to be that good.

How the hell do you know who is or isn't interested in him?

Would Chelsea and Arsenal making bids make you perceive him as being good?

Young English winger? Yes please.

I guess Evra and Vidic were shit then..

Can't believe you judge players by who is after them.

And you believe an "extremely detailed newspaper article" about who is interested? Ok...

Let's be honest - we don't know anything about what actually happens until the managers speak about it - usually after the player is signed.

In fairness, there are a lot of young English wingers.

If I was young, English, and played football on the wing, I'd be a young English winger.

Nonsense, the only way to tell if a player is any good is to look at how many teams want him.
