Wilfried Zaha - Sold to Crystal Palace

Basically, he's being shipped out, probably on loan.
Personally I doubt it'll be on loan, he's last in the pecking order of the strikers and I can't see him making it in that role. Van Gaal doesn't see him as capable of playing as a wing back (does anyone?) so this is a last resort. I don't really think Van Gaal wants to play him at all but may be doing so just to put him in the shop window so the club can recoup some of the silly money Fergie paid for him.

Zaha used to play as a forward for Palace if I remember right, shouldn't be too much of a problem for him play upfront, mostly as the deeper forward I guess!

Might be up against Vida at the back for Inter, great chance for him to make his mark and prove a point to fans.

Not quite sure what you mean by "deeper forward"?

Van Gaal has said he'll be using the 3-5-2 system so it would seem he'll be one of the two strikers in the second half.

The 3-5-2 is temporary. We'll most probably play 4-3-3.. or at least that is what van Gaal wants to play.
So there will be room for wide players who can't play as wingbacks.

Southampton should bring him in on loan. They don't usually do many loans as they like to promote within but he wouldn't be a bad option there.

Yes he has played up front before and it'll be good to see him get a chance against Inter. Van Gaal has said we'll play both 3-5-2 and 4-3-3. It would seem that 3-5-2 is currently the priority and standard, but we'll still want players to play in the 4-3-3 as well

Whats the point of playing a player like zaha as a striker?, its kind of a waste of his abilities imo.

He'll probably get the "Robben-role" we saw at the World Cup. Looking forward to see him play there as i cant recall seeing him playing there before

What I meant was that he'll play in the role that Robben did for Holland at the WC, be the striker who roams more and plays off the main man.

Just sell him and stop wasting his and our time. I'm sure palace would love to have him back.

I have said this before. This was a pointless signing by Fergie. Why did he buy a someone he was never going to play six months before his retirement. Now the lad has already gone through 3 managers who don't think highly of him.

In the PL of course. I'm talking in pre-season where everyone is being used in unfamiliar positions and the likes of Nani are being given 45 mins in central midfield.

Its definitely more likely Zaha when he gets his chance, will play up front. I just wondered how he'd react to being put at wingback like Young was
Very relevant quotes from LVG today -

"He will have to play as a striker as he can't play the other positions in the system. Ashley Young can play as a wing back. Zaha cannot do that."

He never played as a central striker for Palace, though quite often as a left winger in a front 3. For England U21s I think he played a couple of times down the middle but looked pretty useless there.

Personally I think he may not ever make it as a Premier League player, but may terrorize the odd defence in the Championship. His trickery can look great against slow defenders but won't be as effective in the Premier League, especially when he doesn't have the mentality to out-think defenders and is very easily demoralized. He spent 6 months playing like a pub player for Palace after we'd signed him, looked like his mind and therefore work-ethic just wasn't there.

So scoring two goals in the promotion playoff semifinal and winning a penalty, not to mention man of the match, in the final in Wembley is something a lot of pub players do?

I nearly included that in my post...

I follow Brighton as well as United and have mates who are big Leicester fans, so basically I watch a lot of the Championship, especially Palace that season as they were rivaling Brighton & Leicester and had signed Wilf.
After he signed for us he did absolutely nothing for about 15 games, including the first game and a half of the play-offs. Literally nothing. Palace relied on him and he went missing as they went from automatic favourites to lucky to scrape into the playoffs. Fair enough he had a great end to the playoffs, and it showed the quality that he does have, but he'll never show that consistently at the highest level in my view.

So did you guys hear the story about LVG telling the squad that they didn't have to show up for training the next day and the only guy who didn't show up was Zaha? No wonder he's been the only player not getting in any pre-season games

He needs to be loaned out. It's that simple really. I doubt the guy can be a forward/striker. I mean look at his record in Palace, just 18 goals in 143 matches. He needs to go and develop his winger's skills. So that we can sell him or employ him in 4-3-3 in the future.

Hope he enjoys tonight might not play much more after it
It's a big, big ask for him. He's by no means a natural finisher and he's last in the pecking order of strikers. I think he'll have to show something quite spectacular in the 45 minutes he's got in order to be kept on.

It would probably be in his own best interests if he goes elsewhere and tries to rebuild his career.

Yeah I thought he had a decent half. Was willing to run at them, got into some good positions, had a few nice turns/dribbles and wasn't too flashy or selfish.

Can bring something that others can't. If Nani is leaving and we do plan to play 4-3-3 then he might be a good option to have.. looks like he could play that Robben (at the world cup) role too, where he's tasked with carrying the ball down the middle, forcing the opposition to run towards their own goal.

I'm so glad Moyes gave Valencia more game time than let this guy have a crack on the right....

Showed us what he can potentially do tonight. Give him more opportunities in the first team, under the right system and he could do very well.

Decent cameo in the second half, agree that he should take Nani's place in the squad based on what we've seen from Nani.

Did well today. Though, unless he doesn't mind getting hardly any games I still don't think he has much of a future, especially if we continue using this formation.
