Who could be the new first goalkeeper if de Gea leaves (hopefully he stays)?

No he doesn't complete and utter myth
I've seen them with my own eyes buddy

I'm not taking anything away from Romero. He is a good keeper. A very good number two

But he has had many a dodgy moment for us

Sincerely hope there's little truth in this.

Although my opinion on Schmeichel is tainted by the fact that my brother went to secondary school with him - Schmeichel was universally considered a Grade A pr**k. My brother agreed.

According to the same report they said De Gea is expected to go to Madrid?! Other than reports in Spain (who are even more clueless than the English press) I've seen very little to suggest Dave is off.

Like yourself if he does leave I wouldn't go near Schmeichel.

Not surprising. Fergie would have went for a young keeper like Pickford or Donnarumma who would grow into the club, Jose on the other hand goes for the most readymade option even if the potential isn't that high.

Only twice, in his 26 years, did SAF go for a young keeper. Only once it paid off.

Reportedly. I don't think Schmeichel would be first choice.

Realistically, if it wasn't for his dad, Kasper wouldn't on anyone's shortlist for the job here. He's been good for Leicester, but I haven't seen much to make me think he's a world class goalie rather than just a very good one. The Schmeichel name isn't good enough reason to favour him ahead of other, more proven candidates.

I saw a report yesterday that R Madrid are pissed at DDG for tweeting out a good luck message to A Madrid.

Van De Saar .Barthez were hardly young goalies who would grow into the job ..Schmeichel is clearly a better fix than any one else that keeps getting mentioned here who people have only seen on YouTube or football manager

I don't get why people have a problem with players who can deliver right now rather than spend 50 million on a teenager who had proven nothing yet

Then how about Oblak, who turned 24 this January and is around the same level as De Gea (so better and younger than Schmeichel)?

And last month A Bola newspaper in Spain reported that if Real Madrid fail to land De Gea, then Schmeichel could well be their next target.

http://www.skysports.com/football/n...id-de-gea?utm_source=t.co&utm_medium=referral

A Bola is a Portuguese newspaper. Well done Sky.

"Sky sources indicate the Leicester City goalkeeper is United's first choice to replace David de Gea if, as expected, he heads back to Spain to join Real Madrid."

I think the author is just corroborating the story with A Bola's old story.

Why would Oblak leave Atletico? even if he want to then why would Atletico sell their first choice goal keeper to United after they have sold their first choice Gk to their rivals Madrid?

This. "Why" indeed. Only muppets think we're getting Oblak.

Spot on. We have the world's most expensive player, might sign the second most expensive player in their primes, and people want them to waste their career waiting for an 18 yr old to develop. We need to start winning now, not 2021.

Because it stupid. If we are lucky to get €80-85 million for DDG, why the hell would we spend €100 million to get his replacement? And why would Oblak leave? He's playing in a top 5 club right now, you think he really wants to play for a team who annually struggles to get top 4 in their own league. People act like Atletico is just going to bend over and let us take him.

what kind of money are we talking about here for young Schmeichel. He signed a contract last season I believe.

Well if we were to get Oblak we wouldn't be paying his release clause of €100 million to get him. It's not likely to get him, but Atletico would need their transfer ban overturned for any chance of getting him for less. Didn't MEN report that Oblak was interested in joining us this summer? Obviously this might not be true, but then again why did Zlatan and Pogba join us and why would Griezmann want to join us? They were/are all at arguably better performing teams, so there's clearly other factors involved.

In what way would Schmeichel deliver?

My 2 cents:

Oblak - Good keeper, maybe looks better due to the epic defensive organisation in front of him, lack of actual keeping to do. Seems like people hope he is a like for like replacement for DDG as he plays for A.M. Will confess I haven't seen much of him but I do watch my fair share of A.M matches...

Undecided.

Schmeichel - Decent keeper but not world class, has his WC moments but then so does every frigging keeper we play against (looking at you Randolph), so that's no justification that he is good enough. Fathers shadow would be tough and he'd never live up to his old man.

Decline.

Have heard rumours re; Joe Hart but I'd veto that straight away.

Ideally I'd like to steer away from English keepers, I personally don't rate them and none of our most successful teams have had one.

How many times has Dave been called up to make a world class save this season? I remember once or twice. Yes, once we go to CL we need a great goalie, but to me with the defense Mournho is building, I can see Schmeichel or Romero being our #1.

Romero might be off as well. Seen a couple of media reports that he's bought a house in milan and supposedly there's been an offer of a two year contract by inter.

You should not intentionally severely weaken one position in your squad.

Oblak is a good GK and probably the best we can get, but nowhere near Big Dave. Hope we dont sell him, keep him at all costs

But it's not intentional. If DDG wants to leave, let him go and milk Perez. I think Romero could step up and Kasper would be a good competition.
I believe it's more about the defensive unit as one, rather than singling out individuals. Yeah, DDG is one of the best keepers and I would love him to stay, but if we can't keep him, we'll have to look elsewhere for replacement. I think Kasper can step up and there's at least 5-6 seasons in him.

Would Hart be ideal? No. Would Hart be catastrophic? No.

Again, while there are two exceptional young English keepers available in Butland and Pickford, United shouldn't be looking abroad; Bayern wouldn't, neither would Juve in their respective countries. That's why their national teams do so well; their clubs grant their best talents the opportunity to develop at the elite level ahead of perpetual imports. The 'golden generation' of England players were all cultivated by big clubs; look at Spurs quantum leap in quality since they opted to put faith in the English kids. It's a mutually beneficial formula.

Pep knows this and that's why he's apparently directed the City hierarchy to prioritise British talent this summer; he knows it was identity that made his Barca great. Both keepers are seemingly on his wish list; of the two, you'd imagine Pickford fits the bill as a Guardiola keeper, whereas the giant Butland is a Mourinho-type.

Good shout. I really like Butland, kid has huge potential.

There's not a ton of English talent I'm in love with, and I think Hart is a terrible idea, since we already have a B+ keeper in Romero, what we need (and can afford to risk because Romero is a safe enough alternative) is someone top class or with the potential to be, but Butland is interesting. The Stoke fans who watch him weekly certainly rate him: http://oatcakefanzine.proboards.com/thread/267859/struggle-hold-butland?page=2

A fek ton of wonga and a buy out clause?
Seemingly the same reasons we can supposedly get griezman... though in truth I wouldn't be surprised if all that happens is they both get new deals with athletico

Didnt Griezmann renew last summer. IIRC he extended till 2021

Is Jose a fan of star keepers. He went with Cech for long enough at Chelseas, a steady but not spectacular keeper. I think he might be happy with something similiar at Utd, maybe initially anyway while he sorts the problems he has outfield first.
