Strootman, Blind and Clasie would be the easiest way to deal with this transfer window but midfield needs more refined class and it shouldn't be a smallest dilemma...

It's gonna be extremely hard to hunt a signature before the big tournament but for players like Kroos, Schweinsteiger, Cesc, Carvalho, even Koke or Vidal we could easily prepare a serious offers after the post World Cup price reset and chances are we could hunt one or two great midfielders and then think about injured Strootman or perhaps young Jordy Clasie as a squad's depth overhaul.

So far the safest bet is Shaw and we're probably one offer away from completing the whole deal.

Same here.

He's injury prone and will be 30 when the league kicks off. You are joking. Cesc is a creative midfielder of world class ability of which there are very few available. Strootman and several others would be just as good as Bastien in afew years.

Van gaal as systems he likes to play . He prefares players that he knows or are young enough to be coached into playing these systems . No big time Charlie's for 40 million that he as to find a place for in his team . All these players that are linked with us you can forget . The players that LVG wants are already lined up dont worry about that . Enjoy the World Cup , keep an eye on holland (ranked 15th) and let's see if he can get them into the quarters . If he does that hes punched above his weight then let's hope he can take over united and get us back on track . Keep the faith boys !!!

My guess is that Van Gaal is not thinking beyond these 4 names for central midfield - Strootman, Blind, Clasie or Schweinsteiger

If he decides not to go for Strootman this summer then he may go for Clasie and likewise if Schweinsteiger doesn't fancy coming then you'd fancy him to go for Blind

It's going to be exciting to hopefully see players that can offer something more to what we already have in central midfield next season...Looks like we'll have to wait till after the WC before any deals can happen though as LVG obviously doesn't want any distractions to his squad

I'm definately a LVG fan . His record stands up and he knows how to win trophys . My only concern is if he brings the likes of blind , clasie , martins Indi , ect and it doesn't work out then surely the knives will be out . Let's be honest about it ! The moyes targets if true , fabregas , carvalho and kroos would be music to our ears at present but the grape vines telling us LVG is not interested . Ive never known a manager who is not even in the job yet be trusted so much . He could sign robbie savage and get vinnie jones out of retirement and we would still give LVG the benifit of the doubt !

I just can't get my hopes up too high for a decent midfielder coming in after all the abominations of the last several seasons. We had a brilliant young prospect in Pogba and we let him go -- or at least made it intolerable for him to consider staying on; then we signed Fellaini, who's at best a good squad man for us. But that was under Ferguson and then Moyes and now we have LvG, so we shall see who he can bring in. What a shame he won't be able to devote his full attention to United until after the World Cup!

And we'll be left with a load of turds from Eredivisie and no money in the bank. We won't have this opportunity to spend big often, as we seemingly have now. It'll be back to 'no value in the transfer market' before we know it.

I think it's a massive risk allowing him to build a dutch core of players to play one specific system.

If it's true that Strootman and Schweinsteiger are Van Gaal's midfield targets, then no one is the answer.

I think we can sign Vidal and Schweinsteiger [if we have anywhere close to what has been reported], these two seem to be available.

Since it's all doom and gloom, we won't be getting Vidal, Fabregas, Kroos, et al. or any other marquee signing for that matter, I thought some could use an example that we don't necessarily need to. Obviously there are players a lot of people like us to sign and they would mean an immediate solution to our problems, but I'd be completely alright with signing someone like Allan from Udinese. Admittedly I haven't seen him play, just heard about him and then read about him, then again I hadn't heard/seen Hernandez or Smalling either before we signed them. They turned out to be good and/or will only become better.

Parejo, L. Bender, Gonalons, Blind, Ander Herrera, Strootman, Saul Niguez, Fofana, Sertic, Geis, Kramer, McCarthy, Schneiderlin and Jorginho could all be players to improve our midfield options, whether they are good enough or actually want to come is a different matter. I'm sure there are more players I haven't heard of or seen that can make a difference for us.

Well that's easy, why don't we do that?

Well Fab is definitely up for 27m, I assume Strootman would be a similar fee, probably less. That makes Vidal a 60m signing - you think Juve would turn that down? No way, Jose.

There's not a hope we'll get vidal...nonesence to think we'd get him when both real and barca will be after him too if juve decide to sell....he's a native dpanish speaker....hardly gonna come to us over spanish teams

The 4 I would go for would be Schweinsteiger, Vidal, Dembele and Kovacic. They would be added to Mata and Carrick. Then we have a 3 man midfield with 3 from those 6 in every game. There is a strong blend between attack and defense with all 6 of those players and each have different strengths. There is no weakness, because at least one of those 6 is very strong in at least 1 vital area for midfield. It would be very difficult to select an unbalanced midfield with those 6 players.

If you have a midfield 3, DM, CM and AM, then Fabregas cannot be the CM, he must be the AM.

Fabregas always played with Song, Diaby, Wilshere etc and played as AM. With Barcelona he always plays as AM or "ST".

He played there for Arsenal. I have no doubt he can still play there.

I would personally define a deep-lying playmaker as someone who sits in front of the back four and dictates play, Pirlo, Carrick, Alonso, etc. From what I can remember, Song was more the deep-lying playmaker for Arsenal, while Fabregas got forward quite a lot and was the link between midfield and attack.

Fabregas is not a deep lying playmaker, no way. Pirlo is the definition of a deep lying playmaker. Carrick and Xabi Alonso are best described as defensive midfielders who are good in possession.

The difference between Pirlo and players like Carrick, Xabi Alonso and others is that Pirlo's main strength is his playmaking and creativity. Carrick and Xabi Alonso pale in comparison to Pirlo in those areas, but their main strength is their defensive contribution.

Playmaking and creativity - Pirlo >>>>>>>>>>> Xabi Alonso >> Carrick
Defensive contribution - Carrick >> Xabi Alonso >>> Pirlo

That is why Pirlo is, overall, a much stronger play than both Carrick and Xabi Alonso.

Any of Clasie, Schweinstiger, and or Vidal. With Strootman coming in January.

They are both different players. We need both type of players - a deeper lying playmaker and a defensive mid.
Fabregas has said he wants to play further forward and Strootman is a box to box midfielder.

Assuming Van Gaal wants a good all-rounder for his box-box role, we could do a lot worse than Daniel Parejo. Doesn't have the quality of Fabregas, but can tackle, dribble, stereotypical Spanish passing qualities, and 25 years old.

Van Gaal stated in the media today that he wanted to sign Arturo Vidal from Leverkusen when he was still coaching at Bayern.

Which was already known, but I think he got asked about him because of the Holland - Chili match coming up.

I honestly don't think we'll sign a midfielder in the summer and will try for Strootman in January.

Good maybe he is on this list then...

Whether he's good enough or not for the fans, I can see Clasie coming and maybe Schweinstiger too.

Has any decent source even linked us with Clasie or is the usual his dutch so Van Gaal will sign him? Regardless his eerily similar to Cleverley in playing styles and talent except Clasie has a set of balls it will be no improvement over our current options.

Bit of the media putting two and two together, but also if he has a good World Cup, Van Gaal may believe he'll fit into his system at united.
