Which midfielder will we sign this summer?

from what i remember cleverly was great at the start, got injured came back and wasn't very good and got dropped at the end of the season when they went on their great run to escape relegation.

but i agree with you on McCarthy anyway.
Wasn't Cleverley cited by Fergie as the reason we didn't sign a midfielder one summer?

He will probably play by September or October. The January thing is because someone suggested it would make more sense to pursue him during the winter window.

I see, well we might as well get 3 more months out of him if the medical team are convinced he'll recover from his current injury without problems.

Aren't there any good midfielders in the South American and African leagues? The South American leagues are quite strong and there are several players in the South American NTs who do not play in Europe but are talented nonetheless. Surely there is atleast one midfielder out there who is better than what we have. We got to get them before the world cup. I am tired of looking at the usual suspects linked to us again and again.
They won't get work permits in 99% of cases unless they are playing regular international football. And if they are playing international football they'll have already been signed up.

Didn't know about this. Just looked up the internet and found this..
Footballers are no different, only they apply through their prospective clubs, who act as ‘sponsors’ for the duration of the desired visa. In England, the criteria (which are very similar to those in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales) are as follows: the club must be a member of the Premier League or the Football League; the player must compete only for clubs in those leagues; the player must have participated – if available – in at least 75 per cent of his national team’s senior competitive internationals during the last two years; that national team must be in the top 70 of the Fifa rankings when averaged over two years.

Can't we ask some small club in other European countries to buy for us and we sign from that club? Is this illegal?

The player will still come from outside the EU. Its based on their passport not where we've signed them from.

Apparently, Shaquiri told Swiss free newspaper "20 Minuten" that Heynckes had more confidence in him, and that he needs to change something if things don't change for him under Pep. ;)

Reports say we arent interested in either Kroos or Fabregas. Which tells me we want high energy box to box players.

Strootman + another?

McCarthy, Schweinsteiger, anybody else?

Not interested in Kroos, not interested in Fabregas...

I can't wait to see which midfielder we *are* interested in, that is better than those two!!

Maybe someone like Strootman. That will be it. Paired with Cleverley we have lethal weapons of mass destruction on our hands.

Another season of a shit midfield beckons.

But its okay, because we can attract the best players in the world

Perhaps none of them? I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up not signing a midfielder. It's been our policy to avoid midfielders at all cost for the past five or six years, it could well continue under the new reign. It's obviously even tougher to get one now when we don't have the Ferguson factor, had the worst season in Premier League era and won't offer European football at all.

Even the rumors about Carvalho have died out.
Cos he was a Moyes signing and is now off to Monaco as we're stupid enough to get rid of all of the work that had previously been put in on signing players to go for a list supplied by a new manager of players that may or may not be attainable. The latter more likely than the former.

Just let it go, look forward to and enjoy the World Cup. Rule number one with United and transfer windows is always to keep your hopes down.

Ok it looks like Fabregas,Rakitic Koke and Vidal are all gone out the window. So where do we look to next. There is not many world class midfielders that might be available after those.

We seem very set on signing Strootman so hopefully he recovers quickly. We should really look into Schweinsteiger's situation and Carvahlo is still a great option imo.

I do worry we'll be rummaging around the bargain bucket come August again.

Viable top end midfield options are seriously dwindling with Rakitic joining Barcelona and Fabregas seemingly on the verge of joining Chelsea. It now seems highly unlikely that we can acquire a midfielder in that bracket, so I think we'll most likely sign a relatively underwhelming - given the calibre of player we've targeted - Dutch midfielder like Clasie or Blind. That being said, Strootman would be an excellent addition, but his long-term injury might be a deterrent as to whether we do business this summer. It will certainly be an improvement on last season at the very least.

Out of curiosity, is anyone aware of what Moutinho's current situation is like? I'm a big admirer of his and despite their being no need for Monaco to generate funds, I would very much approve of a big bid for him. Superb midfielder.

At this stage my hope is that Van Gaal finds a player who maybe we and other managers dont see as being in that top bracket, but one who is perfectly equipped to do the very specific role he has in mind for him, and who will improve us immeasurably. Given Van Gaal's pedigree I dont think that hope is too outlandish. We could sign a player without much fanfare who could go on to become seriously hot property after making a name for himself with us.

Or at the very least, we sign a player who improves us measurably, gets us back into the CL, and next summer we pull the stops out for The One.

Ya, Monaco will have no reason to sell him, especially, if they want to challenge for the title this season.

Unfortunately I do see us missing out, yet again on midfield players such as Fabregas and Rakitic. The urgency of the situation means ideally we should sort it out before the start of the season (pre season, really) and not be left with scraps such as Fellaini. The whole midfield needs shipping out and replaced and I hope van Gaal has some plans in the area.

We could probably get Fabregas, Vidal and pre-sign Strootman for 120m - if not less. Sack off Shaw and get Rodriguez, stick in a bid for Lovren, hey presto! That's about 150m spent and we've got a team that should smash the league to smithereens.

Well that's easy, why don't we do that?

Or Roma and Juve could say, no those players aren't for sale... as could Wolfsburg, as could Southampton. I don't get why everyone assumes that you can just snap your fingers and clubs bend over? The players are under contract, there is no obligation for the clubs to sell so unless they are willing to play ball, we won't be getting those players.

It's a bizarre situation for a club of our stature. I can't picture Barca, Bayern, Madrid, Chelsea among others in a situation were their whole midfield needs to be shipped out. Even Carrick looks done for TBH.

Are people really so confident that Strootman would leave or Roma would even sell him. Only been there a year and Roma are coming off of an excellent season and will have CL football next season unlike ourselves.

Would Schweinsteiger be willing to drop down to our level? If Bayern have decided to push Kroos ahead of him then he may be made available.

He's far from finished, only turns 30 in 2 months. He's not the athletic player he once was with all his injuries but he could do the deeper role that Steven Gerrard has done so effectively for Liverpool this season. Would be great to give Carrick a kick up the hole that he needs too.

Schweinsteiger would be our best midfielder by a big distance (unless he's declined massively within the last 12 months). He's also a leader, something we desperately lack in our squad. Unless he has serious injury issues I really don't see how anyone can be less than pleased if we get him, particularly those who are expecting an instant return to challenging for the title.

Fellaini with a haircut, it'll be like a new signing.

Doubt anything's happening until after LVG is back at OT so might as well stop worrying about for it.

I would prefer Kroos/Fabregas over Schweinsteiger but I would be very happy with Schweinsteiger.
