Which midfielder will we sign this summer?

MEN is saying that we've plonked a £45million bid on the table for Fabregas. I'm not convinced either that we'll get him but he would certainly be a great acquisition. I'm still waiting to see who's leaving. Might be a few surprises there.

Are they?!

Fletcher must surely retire...much as I love the lad. Carrick? how many games can he play coming season. Cleverley may be heading to Everton if we are to believe the stories. van Gaal may just promote Pearson and Peraira to the squad. Lets not forget Anderson is back. I think van Gaal may try to see what he can get out of him. Oh...before I forget. Powell will be back too. I hope we don't sell him as some reports have indicated. Think the lad is quality.

EDIT: I forgot Fellani. probably van Gaal will too.

all I am reading now is Barcelona are offering 40 million GBP for Mata...but nothing 'new' about Fabregas coming here. So there may be a trade...but I suppose van Gaal may think Kagawa can do the job Mata has done. I would not be happy to lose Mata though.

MEN are actually quoting The Daily Star who are actually saying we're preparing a 45M and not that we have submitted one. Chinese whisper.

We'll pay a buttload for a seriously injured Strootman who may not be as good in our 2 as he was in Roma's 3. Maybe it works out maybe it doesnt, definitely a risk

feck it, raid Everton. Splash the money on Barkley and McCarthy

I really like this lad... Might never be world class but the job he does is not for the classy type and we do need his type to ever compete at the top again...

I doubt we'll sign any big names. Van Gaal will want to analyse the squad to see what he has already. Any signings will probably be good young Dutch players he knows about or we will get someone in January.

my inner muppet wants us to splash the cash and sign a few world class players, but I have full faith in Van Gaal to sort us out.

I don't have any faith. I think we're going Dutch for the central midfield and I don't think that they're good enough. If Clasie and Blind are good enough for United's midfield they would have moved from the distinctly second class Dutch league to a better league by their age. If we go for them we'll bomb.

Are we going to have a bigger meltdown this summer than last year?

He will be just another Fellaini/Barry/Young, Shining in a mid table club and bombs when plays for a big club. We have so much dross already and we don't want to replace them with another probable failure.

We need proven players or I would rather move players up from the academy and see how they come along.

The Caf needs to pop a Prozac.

The Club has already made it's most important signing of the season in the appointment of Van Gaal, the man is a winner with a tried and tested brand of attractive, attacking football. He has already stated that he know who he wants to come in and who he wants to leave, I'm sure Woody will be working hard to get these deals done as he himself will wan't to make amends for the farce of last summer. If we sign an unknown player from the Dutch league, then so be it, it's because LVG want's him and thinks he will be right for the system he intends to play.

Good post.

Last summer has scarred a lot of fans. I can understand why, it was a disaster. I think we all hoped for a signing or maybe two before the World Cup. It might not happen now so it's frustrating. Being linked with everyone under the sun, quite often when we have no interest whatsoever I'm sure, doesn't help.

But every summer, Clubs turn down bids from us, players opt to go elsewhere and deals seem to take an eternity to complete. It happens to every Club and it will happen here so we may as well brace ourselves for it now.

However, maybe it's the optimist in me, but I still think we'll get players in and be closer to where we need to be.

In answer to the original post, I'd guess the midfielder van Gaal really wants is Strootman.

I've been a big fan of Van Gaal since I watched his young Ajax side conquer Europe. He may well bring in young Dutch players that not many have seen or heard of, but I'm pretty confident he will bring in afew players at least who will excite the United fans.

Let's hope so for the sake of the Caf's sanity, but many on here seem to think it will be a complete disaster if we don't go out and spunk 50 million big ones on Vidal or players of his ilk.

Are you going by their names or their performances? Or just another obsession of going with the crowd...
Barry wrong example, Fellaini is nothing like him, Young has always played his best football as a forward(when was the last time he played in that position)....
This lad is the Davids, Keane, Gattuso type..now tell me those are mid table players..
Not every footballer is a play maker or had the privilege of coming through the academy of a top club...
So, its all good for us to go abroad and sign players from mid table teams from lesser leagues but a stand out performer in the premiership should not be considered..

A lot of fans seem to think that if we don't sign the likes of Vidal, Kroos, Fabregas etc we're fecked, which is not the case. Vidal was a player playing in the German Bundesliga before Juventus bought him, and it was obvious to see then that he was a fantastic player. That was the time to buy him, now we can forget about it.

The players I feel Van Gaal will target are the ones that are on the cusp of being World Class. Players who are looking for a stage like O.T to show the world that they're the real deal. Players with hunger and desire and the ambition to be the best, them are the players Van Gaal will target in my opinion.

Good post, and the bolded bit is the important part. Even if we were to make no signings at all, I'd be confident we'd do better and play better football than last season.

Given how utterly shite we were last season that's not exactly a leap of faith. ;) LvG will obviously be a step up from Moyes but if he has to use the same lackluster midfield he'll find it hard going to get us purring the way some expect.

So similar type of player means similar quality now?. If he is such a talent, why was there absolutely no other club interested in buying him other than Everton, or why is no other club considering a bid for him now?. Signing players from Midtable sides was what got us into this mess. You want to sign more of them?. While we are at it might as well sign Barry and Naismith, seeing they were stand out players for Everton this year

Just remember Scott parker few years back was a standout player as well.

There's no way Van Gaal will look at our midfield and not want to add anyone, especially if we have the funds available.

My bet on what happens is that after being snubbed by Kroos and Fabregas and Strootman not a good idea seeing as he will not be able to contribute anything until October at best, we will go into the season with what we have. After Van Gaal sees first hand what he's dealing with, we will just end up paying Carvalho's release clause.

Right a run down of the availability of our midfield targets:
Vidal:Highly unlikely to leave Juventus, if he does all the usual suspects will be interested.
Pogba: Same story as Vidal, more likely to leave but even less likely to go to us.
Koke: Another very unlikely to leave, given the season Atletico have had.Imagine he would prefer to stay in Spain with Barca if he does go.
Rakitic: Apparently doesn't want to leave Spain but I think we could tempt him with the right bid, especially if he values first team football or Madrid or Barca don't come calling.Unsure whether he would work in a midfield two or a three containing Mata or Kagawa.
Fabregas: Seems quite likely to leave at the moment. Doubt Arsenal would pass up the chance to sign him for £25 knowing otherwise he would go to us. Appartantly we are not interested either.
Kroos: Reliable sources have reported we are no longer interested.Think we could have him for the right price though.
Carvahlo: Again would be available for the right price and the competion is not that strong either. Our interest has cooled however.
Strootman: All indication are that he will be out until October.Might be an option for January.
Gundogan: Still trying to recover from his injury. No way would we take the risk now.We will see how he gets on at Dortmund next season.
Schweinsteiger: It looks like someone has to go in that Bayern midfield and it could be him.Too old to justify spending more than £15 to £20M on him.
Martinez: Has struggled to get games in Bayerns packed midfield.Doubt he will be available, would take around £50M if he was.
Lars Bender: May well be available and would be a good signing alongside a more creative player.
Khedira: Will probably be available this summer, would be a good option for the right price.
Kovacic: Isn't getting games at Inter and would be open to a move.Don't think he is the right option for us at the moment.
Clasie:Only good enough to be a squad player, we need established first teamers.
McCarthy: Same as Clasie and would cost a lot more money too.
Schneiderlin: Same story as McCarthy, doubt Southhamton would sell us two of their best players.
Barkley: £45M is too much for him. He plays as a No.10, he may be able to convert to CM but it would take a while.

That's just about all of the midfield players we have been linked with.Based on that it looks very difficult to get the top class players but Real and Barca can't sign everyone so maybe we have a chance to sign a couple of them.We can also look at some the players lower on the list who could compliment one of the bigger players well or someone to plug a gap until next season when we have CL to offer. And of course a scouts could always unearth a gem we've never heard of.

The Daily Mail has said that we could get Schweinsteiger for 10 million, whatever drugs that they are on I want to give them a try.
