I don’t think there are miracles around the corner. Our PPG in the league was 1.58 last year. Across our 11 games this season, it is 1.45. I think this is us and our level.

Let’s say 1.5, which would have us at 57 points by the end of the season. That should put us somewhere between 7th and 9th according to the past few seasons.

The following clubs are all better than us and have no business finishing below us unless they self-destruct:

-City
-Liverpool
-Arsenal
-Chelsea
-Villa
-Spurs
-Newcastle

It's hard to see us climbing out of this mess because we simply aren't capable of scoring enough goals.

If Ten Hag is gone soon and we can bring in a few decent attackers in January, maybe we could battle with Newcastle and Spurs for 6th or 7th.

At this point we're not good enough to be a top 5 club.

The only saving grace has been that the last 3 clubs mentioned above have had their own unconvincing games. We'll be going they hit some bad form, for us to get more points than them by the end of the season. And we'd have to stabilise.

I wouldn't be surprised if Brighton finish above us, if they stay injury free. Fulham are playing miles better than us now, but will no doubt hit a downturn in form.

Over 50% expect 4th or above. Very interesting. Under current Manager, 8th at best, because every other teams have improved, we go the wrong direction.
That was clearly the new season optimism since the poll closed in mid Aug.

Do you think the league is substantially stronger than when ETH finished 3rd a few seasons ago? Or our team is worse?

The team about the same, just a bit more potential because of youth that could go either way: Hojlund, Zirkzee, Mainoo, Garnacho, Yoro and even Amad.
As for the league, a bit stronger now with Arsenal more consistent, Aston Villa and Newcastle looking to build. Liverpool had bit of a blip in the 22/23 season.
The 3rd place finish of ours seemed a bit lucky for me. First because of how it started, second because we abandoned working on being better in possession which for me is an over-riding issue for more than a decade now. So possession football, or simply being better when we do have more of the ball seems the problem we have failed to solve for a decade or more now.

We are a lot worse far more than I could have ever have imagined and that's with never rating Ten Hag

Our ppg this season in the league is 1.14. And it was only so 'high' last season as we got quite a lot of results in the first half of the season that were against the run of play and we didn't really deserve. Based on most metrics we deserved to finish 14th last season, which is exactly where we actually are so far this season.

I’m counting cup games (hence 11 games played). I know they’re not points games, but I’d rather do that to have a bigger sample size.

I’ve made a few posts on here and honestly no matter how you slice the data, you end up with a pretty horrible picture for our last ~65 games under ETH.

It’s why I don’t see the current form as a short term issue. It’s a long term trend we’ve been on.

I predicted 6th near the start of the season on the basis of what I predicted ETH would deliver after his showing last season. It's since been even worse than I thought it was going to be, so sixth looks optimistic now

Yep, that's exactly how I felt.

I thought we'd see enough of an improvement that we should sneak into sixth(while probably being closer to 7th than 5th), but still nowhere near good enough. Unfortunately it hasn't even been that good.

Even if we include the cup games it's only 1.18 ppg this season. 1.27 if you include the Community Shield as a draw at the end of normal time, rather than the penalty shootout loss.

To get 1.45 you must have mistakenly given us a win in that Community Shield.

Just for the sake of curiosity If we keep Ten Hag for the majority of the season I could geniunely see us finish in the bottom ten.

What made you think that ETH would deliver after last year's disaster?

To be clear I don’t count sixth place as delivering anything. That is lower than what should be a minimum expected standard here. I just assumed one or two of the teams around us would falter and we would end up in sixth by default with some moments of quality from the players dragging us through here and there.

Our points per game this season is like 1.1 and was not too dissimilar end of last season, which is enough data to say we will probably finish anywhere between 11 and 14.

9th or 10th. Top5 is possible if United acts now and replace ETH.

Before the season started i would have said 5th, but now I think it will 7th dependant on when 10 gets sacked.

We are currently 14th. Thirteen teams are ahead of us on the table and at least seven of them are better. City, Pool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Villa, Spurs, Newcastle are definitely better teams and as we show relapse instead of progress i wouldn't be surprised if Brighton and West Ham would also finish ahead of us. So somewhere between 8th and 10th if ten Hag stays, if he'll get fired then probably 6th but no higher. In squad value per performance comparison we are the worst team in the league at the moment.

Sorry yes I was going off memory a bit from a post I made a few days ago. Yes, 1.27 is what I have (including community shield as a draw).

It's bad. At this rate, 48-49 points over 38 games. That's somewhere between 10th and 12th.

Nowhere. As long as we have a manager who's clueless we may as well have nobody at the wheel.
