Westminster Politics

Is anyone really surprised? Boris Johnson has always been this guy. He's never tried to be anyone else. The country was stupid enough to believe 'Get Brexit Done' was enough to give him the power to do what he wants and this is the result.

The UK is second only to the US nowadays in terms of the relative stupidity of the average voter.

Is anybody really surprised?!?! This is Boris Johnson ffs, it’s not as if nobody had been warned way in advance to what he’s like.

The next general election‘s going to be fascinating because there’s going to be a lot of disgruntled Tory voters, which will be quite unique at an election. Could be very good times for the Lib Dems.
Hopefully the British public will also wake up to the threat of the Murdoch dominated media. Something needs to be done about that.

“Disgruntled Tory voters” simply hold their nose while voting Tory again. They’ve got a house that needs to keep appreciating in value don’t you know?

Next general election isn’t for a while. This will be long swept under the rug by then. The British public’s memory for anything the tories do is pathetic. Besides they will blame Boris and he won’t make the election anyway.

Opposition need to be targeting the Tories as a whole, not just Boris. They went along with his every move. They are no different. The sad thing would be he is sacked and replaced by another Cnut who the public think is different.

100%. The single reason that Johnson is still PM is because he’s an excellent lightening rod. All of these controversies involve many people within the Tory party, it’s not just him and if he is out the way the focus lands on the wider party.

Right now, there’s nothing at stake. The election isn’t for another couple of years and they have an 80 seat majority. They’ve also got Brexit to deal with and I’m sure they want him to eventually cop the blame for that too.

What all of this shows is just how much control and power the media still have. Boris has not suddenly changed. It's been a shit show for years and this garden party is just one of a litany of scandals that until recently, have been swept under the carpet.

Now they have decided Boris is toast and more of a liability than an asset, the media start hammering him... you know, like they should have been doing all along. Suddenly the polls don't look so pretty for them and his days are numbered.

I'm assuming the media will soon revert back to type when he is replaced. Probably Sunak will take over and then it will be "all hail our glorious leader" again. What a sham of a democracy we live in.

I think thats an oversimplification because the media does not exist cut off from society at large

If you have ever tried to persuade people they are wring about something its difficult and quite frankly people tend to seek out media sources that reflect the opinions they already hold

As such from a commercial point of view if most people have a favourable view of Boris i would be better off allowing that to be reflected in my framing of reporting - equally if that turns then I am better off reflecting that.

With ready access to virtually instant information skewed from whatever viewpoint you like available online its a totally different eco system than the 1980's where people really didnt get any views or insight till the news headlines at 6pm or 9pm then no real further info till the one newspaper they brought the next day - its such a different landscape now and media outlets are chasing the clicks and views ASAP - as such I dont really think they are in the business of shaping opinion any more than they are in the business of reflecting opinion

oh no how will boris wriggle out of this one
Im hoping he tries something like this again

Hes odds on to leave office in 2022 now so if anybody genuinely thinks hes going to wiggle out of it then might be worth a punt on 2023 or later

As it is now i think the conservative party wait till the investigation and offer him the chance to jump before they push him... will let rishi get in one last budget (and a chance to announce tax cuts) ... leadership election spring... conference after the summer then Id guess if the new PM gets an electoral bounce they have a budget April 23 tailored for a May election

I think he'll be gone before the local elections in May. My guess would be February personally, I think he's deeply fecked with the party now. If he does somehow cling on, he'll be gone very shortly after those elections, because with him in charge the Tories are going to take a horrible battering.

I'm fairly sure Boris doesn't give a shit about his time in office being controversial, in fact i think he actively works towards it. He wants to be a prime minister who is remembered and talked about.

He's done that so he'll leave happy with his record.

It's interesting that whenever there is a big news story against the government in the last few months Rishi Sunak is nowhere to be found.

So is this a second party that's meant to have happened or?

Going to get the popcorn ready and tune into PMQs here

So is he going to hide behind the enquiry.
I would be highly surprised if he is man enough to admit to anything.

As a Labour supporter, I'm kind of hoping he does. The longer he stays in power, the bigger the Tory sh1t-show seems to become. It's guaranteed that tons more stuff will come out over time - which should be enough to sink his whole rancid party in time for the next GE.

Thought he was going to quit for a second there.

C'mon Sir Keir...tear him apart

Boris literally has nothing to say and just keep delaying it till the report

He's hoping to throw another dead cat on to the table by then

They do this all the time.

Get caught doing something naughty

Talk about an enquiry blah blah

Enquiry results find them guilty a year later but no one cares anymore.

It may come out next week but yeah - he's expecting it to be old news by then

Was hoping to see Rayner instead of Sir Keir to ne honest - she would have torn him to absolute shreads by now.

BBC graphic alongside the PMQ calling it “a socially distanced drinks event”

 kindly feck off.

It was a fecking party in a garden with more than one person. He broke his own rules and the cnut needs to get in the bin.

This has to be the end of this slimy prick. Keir doing a good job finally, so is the SNP fella.

Yeah great time to make a joke Boris. Way to read the room.
