Wesley Sneijder

I agree with the concerns about Sneidjer playing in a midfield 2.

However, I think Rooney will drop in the hole behind Hernandez and that will help with engaging the oppositions midfield.

I dont understand this transfer target.

If we are interested and do sign him, then obviously he is good enough to fit into the team. The people at the club understand football a lot better than I do.

But if it weren't for these strong rumors about the signing, I wouldnt have though for him as being a target given the reported club record trasnfer fee, crazy wages and the fact that he wont be playing in the position where he has had most of his top performances. Everytime I've seen him play, he has been behind the striker. We play with 2 deep lying midfielders and a mobile front 4.

Obviously he is a very good player and it'll be exciting if we sign him, but I'll be a bit surprised if this happened

Its on, done deal.

Now lets concentrate on a holding midfielder. If we post enough it will happen. Who do we want? Diarra will do

When he is sorted then its onto a left back and then all well be well in the world

Diarra was either left behind or refused to go on tour yesterday, due to his disatisfaction with lack of regular playing opportunities. Sounds like Real were content to leave him at home so he can sort out a transfer.

I have a feeling that since Giggs proved to be a huge success in the middle in a 4-4-2, that Fergie thinks he can convert any midfielder in that role. Or we are about to change our system, but then the signing of Young wouldnt make much sense

TBH it is very difficult to predict what Fergie's intentions are in terms of preferred system for next season, and i had a feeling the system could be determined by the players we acquire this summer.

Sneijder and Young imo would make a good case for a 4-3-3, but the main obstacle i feel is whether the Roo/Chico partnership was deemed promising enough to stick with again this season, or whether Hernandez could be sacrificed for a more solid 4-3-3 or 4-2-4 system.

Signing both Sneijder and Young could possibly indicate the latter:

--------------De Gea-------------
Rafael-----Rio-----Vidic-------Evra
-------Carrick-------Jones---------
--------------Sneijder-------------
Nani----------Rooney--------Young

What would happen with Sneijder if Wenger accepted our bid (which is reportedly still on the table) for Nasri?

Would be astonished if we were to sign them both, although choosing directly between the 2 my preference would still be Nasri. Younger, more versatile and frankly more skillful on the ball.

I concede they are different types of players, but in my view Nasri has more attributes and would fit into a variety of systems better than Wes, who seems to shine when the team is picked around him, yet does not seem to be anywhere near as effective when played in a system that is not so complimentary.

Check out Sparky getting sucked in by the transfer muppets. It's a pit of quicksand Sparky. Beware

the last time i got sucked into this madness was when we signed berbatov, now i have tabs open in my browser for SSN, a twitter search for anything posted with the word "sneijder", another twitter search for the "#sneijderseen" hashtag and the man utd homepage :(

If Scholes of the last few seasons could play in a midfield two, so can Wesley fecking Sneijder.

I don't believe we'll sign him, but he would be great for us. His creativity and range of passing would be a fantastic help for our other attacking players.

As a coach as this crap about formations and systems is pissing me off. The positions on a pitch aren't ridgid, and the best teams are very fluent in taking up space and switching positions. We aren't going to buy Wesley Sneijder and make him sit in midfield all the time. We have a great squad with some strong wingers who are very capable of tucking inside and defending, Young, Valencia and Park. Nani less so obviously.

We can easily play with Carrick, Fletcher or Jones infront of a back four and Rooney and Sneijder floating around ahead of that player, can you imagine how hard that would be to pick up. If Sneijder makes a run and ends up out of position do you think Rooney will stand around watching opposition players run into that gap?

Just to enlighten a few people on here, I know there are some tactically aware folks about, but my take on this would be a few possible systems. We'll take the back four as a given...

1: Diamond

----------------Carrick

---Valencia----------------Young/Park

---------------Sneijder

---------Rooney

---------------Hernandez

2: Unbalanced midfield, more common than you think. Requires good attacking right back...we have two Brazilians who fit the bill.

-----------Carrick-----Fletcher

----------------Sneijder

---------Rooney--------------------Nani

--------------Hernandez

3: 4-3-3 with wide forwards

---------------Carrick

--------Fletcher------Sneidjer

Valencia-------Rooney-------Nani/Young

4: 4-3-3 with narrow forwards

---- Carrick---Fletcher--Anderson

---------------Sneijder

---------Rooney-------Hernandez

With the the talent in the squad there options are endless.

Oh, the Muppet in me: Sneijder is apparently set to meet Inter's officials today, there's a meeting in place, according to an ITK-Inter supporter.

If this happens, I will just explode in my pants right on the spot.

But the cynic in me keeps telling me it wont. Wait and see.

Holland's manager take on this

Van Marwijk: the system Utd play, resembles that of the Dutch national team. Hence the possible transfer to Utd is beneficial for both "At Utd he would play in the same position as he does with the Dutch team. As at Inter, he plays a lot deeper.

He is not such a phenomenal player that Rooney's role in the side should be compromised. Rooney is a far superior player, and we must allow him the freedom he deserves.

Rooney is not 'far superior', you could argue he's better but he's not that much better.
