Wesley Sneijder

When did 27 become too bloody old?!

Because United briefed the press that they were no longer interested in paying big money for players of that age as they had limited resale value. Berbatov was the last signing of that kind.

Now it is possible United have changed their transfer policy but I'd be surprised as it appears to be working reasonably well overall. Having said that, the signing of Ashley Young doesn't really fit the policy unless the real fee was a lot lower than the figure mentioned in the press.

I'm not bothered at all about his age. The question of fitness and injuries should be based on past record - which I do not know - rather than age.

I just think we've missed the boat when it comes to signing a young midfielder and bringing him on. We tried that with Anderson and while I still believe he can be a super player for us, our midfield is now at a state we need a proven player. People will say look at Hernandez, but it has to be said it would be far easier for an inexperienced striker to settle into a team than a midfielder. It's such a big role. We are strong in just about every other department, but failure to take care of the heart of the team, just like the heart of a human being, would not result well.

A football team can't always look to the future and think about players for 10 years. We got six from Ronaldo, only three of them at a stage he was matured in his football. Any regrets about signing him? No, I didn't think so. If we get five years from 'a Sneijder', that's fine by me. Could be the missing piece for this team. Well worth the money.

As we badly need a world class midfielder right now, I hope Fergie is just paying what is needed to get whoever he wants. Not sure he will though, but I would hate to see that we couldnt get who we wanted as we are too tight

Paddy said this on his blog yesterday

First game is 13th July in Boston so make sure you tune in on MUTV for that one and we might just see one more signing to really light up the new squad, let’s see what happens over the next few days.
Pre-Season Tour In The States | Pat Crerand

Not related to Sneijder, but didn't know where to put it.

Just heard Italian correspondent Max Evangelista on Talksport say the deal for Sneijder is almost done. Apparently Utd have offered 40m euros and Inter need the money.

Evangelista also claimed that the current Inter boss doesn't see Sneijder as capable of playing in a central 2, his preferred system is 3-4-3, therefore is surplus to requirements.

He also claimed he cannot see how Sneijder would fit into Utd's system, but quickly conceded that SAF knew significantly more about players and sytems than he did.....! :smirk:

Begs the question though, whether Utd will change to a 4-3-3 system of some description, to better accommodate Sneijder, should we in fact get him.

Being an optimist that I'm. I think this deal will happen.

Hope this story has legs... :nervous:

---------------De Gea---------------
Fabio----Ferdinand---Vidic----Evra
Nani----Carrick---Sneijder----Young
------------Rooney
----------------Hernandez

And then for European/Arsenal/Liverpool away games;

---------------De Gea---------------
Fabio----Ferdinand---Vidic----Evra
---Fletcher---Carrick---Sneijder---
Nani----------------------------Young
---------------Rooney---------------

1 player really could make all the difference :drool::drool:

Its on, done deal.

Now lets concentrate on a holding midfielder. If we post enough it will happen. Who do we want? Diarra will do

When he is sorted then its onto a left back and then all well be well in the world

I have a feeling that since Giggs proved to be a huge success in the middle in a 4-4-2, that Fergie thinks he can convert any midfielder in that role. Or we are about to change our system, but then the signing of Young wouldnt make much sense

we're going to see a lot more of 4-3-3 and variants of it if sneijder is signed IMO.

A question about SAF press conference on SSN, if he was asked about Sneijder why the feck havent they shown his reaction and answer to that speculation instead of focusing on a player we're NOT getting? Can anyone confirm he was actually asked about Sneijder at the press conference??

Not heard the question, but apprently the question asked about the rumours of Nasri and Sneijder joining. Fergie ignored making any comments about Sneijder.

You are either sarcastic or naive... I hope for the first

I am being neither sarcastic or naive, we don't desperatley need any player as the ones we have are more than good enough to compete.

i have a good idea! lets stay awake until this happens, we can stay awake until it is announced with marshmellows, haggen daas and hot chocolate, wrap up on the sofa with a duvet and see the magic unfold , it would be sneidtastic!!

another thing to consider, with fletch having a case of bad aids, and ando being best in a midfield 3....sneijder would work domestically.

I think we'll see lots of 4-3-3 even domestically with sneijder-ando-carrick

Drop Hernandez or shift Rooney out wide?

Veron was younger than Sneijder when we signed him and arguably more exciting as a player. But we need now a player like Sneijder more than we needed Veron back then, so hopefuly Sneijder will prove to be the right player for us if we sign him.

I reckon we should probably play this at home:

----------------de Gea----------------
Fabio-------Vidic------Ferdinand---Evra
----------Carrick----Sneijder----------
Nani-----------Rooney----------Young
-------------Chicharito---------------

With maybe Berbatov to come in

Paddy Cerand on a possible new signing
So the main news is the squad which has already been confirmed as following:

Goalkeepers: Lindegaard, Amos and Johnstone with De Gea joining up with the team a little later.

Defenders: Raphael, Fabio, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Evans and both Smalling and Jones joining up later too.

Midfielders: Carrick, Nani, Anderson, Giggs, Park, Obertan again with Cleverley and maybe one new signing joining up soon after.

Forwards: Rooney, Berbatov, Owen, Young, Macheda, Diouf with Welbeck and Hernandez joining at a later date as per all the lads who have been playing in various competitions through the summer break.

First game is 13th July in Boston so make sure you tune in on MUTV for that one and we might just see one more signing to really light up the new squad, let’s see what happens over the next few days.

Cheers

how can it be enough when scholes retire and hargreaves left the club, .....we are only left with carrick, anderson and fletcher. its not good enough.

For the premiership sure....

Even in the league our midfield showed extreme weakness against lower tier teams. Now Scholes is gone and Giggs is a year older. It may not be enough anymore. It barely was last season.

Not bothered about europe. We can sign Sneijder and another midfielders and still be beaten by Barcelona. They are a special team. But even in the league, what we have is not enough.

True but it depends on how we use players like Park/Young and Jones also the youth like Cleverly etc. I'm not saying we'd win the league, obviously I personally want us to buy or promote youth. I think Sneijder would help against Barcelona though, because you need midfielders like him to handle the pressure

I can't see us giving Young a midfield role. Jones can do a defensive job, but what we're lacking is someone who can hold the ball, spread the play, not lose it too easily (like we've done so many times). Park is good for certain games, certain tactics, but not a regular midfield player.

Fergie said that when the big guns retire he'll have to spend. And this is it. One was goalkeeper, the other is midfield. We've got talent - Anderon, Cleverly - but right now we need proven quality. There's no way to shield our lack of ability on the ball in midfield without harming other parts of the team (mostly the forward line, by playing with three midfielders). We've got depth, but not enough top level quality.

Of course Sneijder would have helped against Barcelona. I'm just saying you can buy the whole world and still fail to beat them. Real is a good example...

All this talk about Sneijder not fitting into this system or that system is a load of hot air in my opinion.

I'd like to think if we are about to shell out 35 million quid on someone that they would be adaptable and have the quality to fit into any system we damm well tell them to.
