Wesley Sneijder

Hardly a scoop. This has been widely reported for ages now. There's tribesmen in the jungles of Papua New Guinea who are aware that the biggest hurdle in the way of this transfer is Sneijder's wages.

Yeah, these stories always seem to snowball from one source.

He's an utter moron, one with an anti-Fergie agenda.

If you ever listen to The Game Podcast it's eminently clear that he's not a big fan of Ferguson or Manchester United. Ferguson was unhappy about that biography and I think words must have been said between them, because Barclay's attitude to United has taken a sharp turn for the worst since that book was released.

Oh okay, thanks for clearing that up.

From the Mirror:

Inter Milan’s board will meet on Tuesday to sanction the sale of Wesley Sneijder to Manchester United.

And Inter boss Gian Piero Gasperini said: “I try not to be worried about Sneijder.

“He is one of the best players in Europe. But I am convinced we can find a new player when he goes.”

My final draft!

I need to take a break from this transfer malarkey...

we havent had a splurge in years...

i think we've sorted out the long term with the young players coming through the youth team in addition to de gea, da silvas, evans, jones, nani, valencia, rooney, young, welbeck, cleverley, macheda, anderson who are all 18-25 (correct me if I'm wrong)

I could honestly see us bringing in sneijder and nasri then having a few quiet years in the market

ps i'm off to toss one out

Too many cooks spoil the broth. It'll only be either one of them

Not a chance, unless Nani goes, but Nasri doesn't want to play wide, so it would be daft.

We want Sneijder. He's the best out there in the position we need. Nasri is a second choice.

But Nasri is younger, cheaper, will have much lower wage demands and has already been PL proven. I'd say Nasri is first choice on that basis IMO, we'll end up getting Sneijder only if Nasri picks Shitty's millions ahead of us.

If, as reported, Nasri is looking at 185k at City, then I would sooner have Sneijder for 220k and 10m more in transfer fees. Sneijder is proven World Class, Nasri had half an amazing season.

'Gazzetta dello Sport has now reported that Soren Lerby, the adviser of Sneijder, commented: "I'm not surprised that Sneijder is associated with the major clubs from England. But I think it is still early for transfers and currently there is nothing concrete to say. In the coming weeks we'll meet with (Inter director) Marco Branca to talk about Sneijder's future."'

Sneijder had just one amazing season, though?

A mobile, technical partner is what Carrick has been crying out for. Scholes was that man in 06-07 but the less mobile he got the more their partnership declined as did Carricks form.

Pretty sure he's been performing at a high level for several seasons.

He wasn't last season, he wasn't in his second season at Madrid, he wasn't in his second last season at Ajax...that's 3 of the last 5. And in his first season at Madrid he really wasn't fantastic, not any better than Nasri last season, had a fantastic start with 5 goals in his first four games but was inconsistent thereafter, that said he was mainly out wide which is hardly his best position.

He's an excellent player but I think some people have gotten carried away after his brilliant form in 09/10.

I'm never that arsed about transfers but i'd be feckin' giddy if we got Sneijder.

Sneijder had just one amazing season, though?

One good season? He was outstanding at Madrid til the circus started turning its Ferris-Wheel. At Milan, he was the best playmaker in the World in getting them the Treble, the following season he didn't hit the heights due to being Benitez'd yet he still got 7 goals and 7 assists...

Don't get me wrong, he doesn't walk on water, and I have doubts as to how he would adapt in playing within a 2-man midfield, and whether that famous Dutch mentality and workrate will hinder him. But in terms of talent, he's the best player available. In fact, the only playmaker I would take over him, would be Ozil...

I'm not convinced by Sneijder, especially at the prices being talked about.

Forget the price. We have no Scholes, no Gibson, and for what its worth, no Hargreaves. We simply cannot go into the new season with no reinforcements. Whether or not the market is bad, is neither here nor there. We have no choice but to get in top-quality reinforcements, otherwise we will be struggling in the League, never mind the Champions League.

Whats more, when you see Henderson going for £20m, £35m for Sneijder is really not all that bad...

I m not convinced by this "2-man midfield" thing..... much depends on the other players in the team. As mentioned in the Nasri thread, Giggs is not the typical player you would expect in a "2-man midfield", however sorrounded by hard working players like Valencia, Park and Rooney - who do not form part of the 2-man midfield, Giggs was a great success.

So if Giggs can play in a "2 man midfield", so can Sneijder...

Sneijder has played in a midfield duo at Ajax, he was doing so when Madrid decided to buy him.

I'd imagine City will be willing to pay more than we will.

Nah I didn't think he was outstanding at all, inconsistent out wide and inconsistent in a deep midfield position. Occasionally excellent but occasionally invisible too, often in between. Looked very good but not close to being one of the best players in the world, not close to outstanding, as he was in 2010. I don't see why Inter were he only ones in for him on the cheap if he was outstanding for Madrid?

Not to mention Chelsea...

Exactly. He's is at least twice the player Henderson, and currently better than Fabregas, who will be sold for a similar 35m fee. He's better than Andy Carrol at 35m, he's better than Darren Bent at 24m and light years ahead of Downing at 20m. For the level of ability and at his peak, then 35m is a good price.

Hang on.. is this actually (possibly) happening then? When I went away last week, this was basically one of those regular transfer forum stories that happen every year. What changed since then?

The press recycling the comment made by a dutch journalist during the week + comments from new inter coach who seems resigned at losing sneijder.
