Wesley Sneijder

Which is wrong really. Although we often struggled in midfield last season, we still won the league and I believe we will do so again whether we strengthen midfield or not. It's in the Champions League where Sneijder would push us up a level.

Agree again, it's a bit of a dilemma for Fergie, does he give youth a chance i.e. Cleverley, Pogba or buy someone like Sneijder and narrow the gap between us and Barca.

I don't think we NECESSARILY need Sneidjer for the premier league. We will finish in the top 2 even without him. But we ABSOLUTELY need him for the Champions League.

We finished top two without him in cl last year.

Look at the teams we went up against in the last three rounds. Our team was more than sufficient to get past all of them.

So? We still finished in the top 2.

Signing Sniejder alone will not close the gap to Barca who are the only team we are inferior to.

I'm pretty bored of this argument. Who exactly should we have played in the Champion's League, to render our progress to the final valid? How about the reigning champions? Oh wait, they got knocked out, nay, hammered, by a team we later annihilated.

Doesn't that go both ways though?

It does. We're both strong sides, and there's not a whole lot to separate us. Especially since Mourinho is quite experienced in battling us. If we met in the CL last season it's certainly not beyond the realms of possibility that they could have deservedly put us out.

I think we need him for the PL as well. Carrick takes around November-December to get into form (as Fergie said), Scholes is gone, Cleveley is great but still a kid, Ando is good but inconsistent.

We could do with some Sneijder creativity in the middle of the pitch.

So no more signings says SAF, so I guess he is not coming. Far be it for me to question Fergie but I think we are making a cock up not signing another midfielder.

I'm sure saf has tried but the deal has to be right for thr club aswell.

We cocked up when we let Nasri think we were more interested in Sneijder / City were more interested than us in signing him

Tuttosport:" Wesley Sneijder is considering lowering his wages as he wants Man United move."

He bloody wel should be considering lowering his wages.

Simply because there is no empirical evidence for that.

People see Madrid with their fancy names and think that we must be inferior to them.

That isn't evidence.

There's also no evidence to suggest they're not better than us. The only team who stood in their way in the league and Europe last season were Barcelona. Would we have fared any better?

Plus, both teams, Madrid and Barca, got definately stronger, some very good buys.

What worries me about Sneijder particularly is that I'm genuinely not convinced he really wants to come to United. If you're on the minimum wage and someone offers you a job for two or three times more per hour you can see how the extra cash is something that'd motivate you, something worth holding out for. However, if the papers are to be believed United are offering Sneijder in excess of £150k a week but he's holding out to closer to £200k. You have to ask then what is so earth changing about that extra £50k or whatever it is? Is his lifestyle going to have to radically change because United will make him slightly less of a millionaire than Inter?

He's supposedly unhappy at Inter and wants to leave...well I've seen people who wanna spend more time with their family take less well paid jobs cos the hours suited the lifestyle they wanted better so if Sneijder is so unhappy and so wants to join United why doesn't he do that? Increasingly I feel that Sneijder is just looking for the last big paycheck of his career and isn't overly fussed about joining United. If he really, really wanted to play for us I don't think us making him an even bigger millionaire than we otherwise will make him would matter all that much do you?

I say stick with our youngsters. People are talking about who we need to get to beat Barcelona. But lets not forget that Barca spend half of the last decade trying to buy success from outside, including a period where they went almost all Oranje, and it was only when they started relying on their homegrown players as the spine of their side that they hit the heights. When the chips are down I'd rather have hungry players with love for the club in my side than supremely skilled mercenaries.

I actually think this has more to do with Sneijders agent. I have read that it is his agent who has turned down the contract offer from us. Obviously he's working on Sneijders behalf, but for some agents getting their client a contract that is less than he currently earns, especially when moving to a bigger club, isn't great for his image.

There is no way that Sneijders current lifestyle will be in anyway affected by the wages on offer or the slight decrease in what he earns now. He's hardly gonna have to start shopping in Aldi. What I think is that this is all about image and posturing. Sneijders agent does not what to be seen to be worsening his clients income. I think Sneijder may well accept it without too much fuss, but if his agent is convincing him that there is more money here and that we are trying to get him "cheaply" then things are different.

Money is money.... Unless he has Dubai money Sneijder is going to miss 50K anyone in that position would. You wouldn't understand unless your living that lifestyle.

Dunno why we can't come to an agreement whereby he gets something around £150,000 a week, under the proviso that he can renegotiate after one year if he's deemed a success.

How would you define success?

We could very well win the Double with Sneijder being injured for 6 months. Or is it goals/assist based? It would be very vague..

You would think that is what we put on the table. Makes sense..

How about just an honest assessment from Fergie.

He always rewards players who deserve it, which is why young players often join us for less wages than they could get elsewhere.

Don't see why it couldn't be different for Sneijder.

Can we not do that by bringing through the likes of Cleverley and Pogba?

No, because Pogba is nowhere near being ready for constant 1st team action and Cleverley will play half a season at the most being generous, meaning for a large part of the season including the CL we're left with the same midfield that was found out last season in most of our games.
