I really wasn't attempting to be condescending, I just don't get why people insist on bringing his wages up when they don't actually know what he makes. Anyway, we're getting way off topic, apologies if I appeared condescending.

Boss set to promote Pogba

Sir Alex has revealed he is promoting Paul Pogba to the first-team squad after being impressed with the FA Youth Cup-winning midfielder.

The 18-year-old Frenchman replaced Paul Scholes in the Reds legend's testimonial against New York Cosmos and is in the manager's thoughts ahead of the new season. The youngsters at Old Trafford have ensured the manager is in a relaxed mood about his squad ahead of the transfer window closing at the end of the month.

"We've got Darren Fletcher to come back," explained Sir Alex. "Michael Carrick, who tends to develop more around November/December. And we’ve got a young boy Pogba who's showing great promise for us. He came on in a couple of games in terms of progress with the youth team, we’re quite positive about him.

"I mean if we hold Pogba back, what’s going to happen? He’s going to leave. You know, in a couple of years’ time when his contract is going to finish. So we have to give him the opportunity to see how he can do in the first-team and he’s got great ability, plus he’s got the physique and athleticism.

"He is a possibility so, when you take that roll call of players you know, I’m certainly not looking to add anybody. I’ve been saying that for weeks, but you’ve all been writing differently, you’ve all been writing about how I’m going to buy this one, I’m going to buy that one but we’ve said nothing, I’m carrying on with business."

I don't 'insist' on it and, as I say, there's enough higher estimates out there to make what I said seem a fairly safe conclusion - certainly not bold.

What do you think all that drama between the club and his agent was for last year if it wasn't to bring him close to what lesser players are on at City?

I'm more than happy enough to admit I don't know what he's on, but there's enough evidence out there to assume it's fairly considerable even by PL standards, meaning my throwaway comment was far from 'bold'.

It goes on....

When asked directly if everybody can forget about Wesley Sneijder arriving from Inter Milan, he replied: "You can forget about anyone you like! I’m happy with the young players we’ve got."

Finally, maybe we can get rid of this thread from the main page now.

I'm glad I didn't get caught up in this thread like some of y'all. Unlike other transfer sagas, deep down I never really thought this one was gonna end in a positive way.

We may already have what we need. We just don't know it yet.

Still, imo, he did not totally rule out the transfer at all but almost. It seems that the latest round of rumours on the italian media makes sense : ie that united got fed up with sneijder's demands and told him to feck off.

I think a lot of us are very optimistic about Cleverley and Pogba, there is just that nagging doubt about whether they are ready to fill some pretty big boots.

There is a lot of scrutiny at Utd, and already Cleverley has given himself a high expectation to live up to. A couple of bad games and some will be writing him off as out of his depth. Sometimes young players don't have the necessary experience to cope with such criticism, as we saw with Evans last season.

That is my only real concern, as he undoubtedly has the talent and the right attitude, so hopefully he can make his mark for us this season.

Whats the deal with people who keep saying close this thread or delete this thread? I mean seriously? I don't really understand you people. If it pisses you so much, then why bother reading the thread. If you want the latest news, google it or if he has signed it is definitely not going to go unnoticed, so you don't have to read this thread to know whats happening with Sneijder.

Let's hope we get no injuries at all, all season cus weve got three vital trophies to aim for. And there aren't any easy games coming up...bring on Barca!

You can argue that it's better to give youth a chance and it will be great to see how Cleverley and Pogba do but we'd be a much stronger team with a bit of class and experience in midfield.

But so be it, it's time to concentrate on the team we have and enjoy it - maybe a few youngsters will really step up, which is far more rewarding than buying finished articles.

Pretty much exactly what you'd expect Fergie to say. I'm more on the side he won't come, but he's never going to say it's a done deal. Thats not how we do business except for Berbatov and Hargreaves.

If talks were being held though, you wouldn't expect him to deny it either. De Gea for example, has been a long time speculation, and his comments regarding his transfer from Atleti to us didn't seem to confirm nor deny it, but even while the transfer wasn't official, he made comments that led to the fact that we were pursuing him.

I've met Pogba at the supporters club (I also brought pictures of him) and saw him play with the reserves life once. He's a big lad, powerful and technically gifted. On the other hand he is still miles away from competing for a first team place. Not even Scholes was able to compete for a first team place at age 18.

The truth is that after spending over 50m (including a 3rd-4th choice defender and another winger) we're still left with a big hole in center midfield which got weaker with the departure of Scholes and Hargreaves + the fact that Giggs got a year older. Lets hope that promising Cleverley will be able to perform miracles and that Anderson will finally deliver the goods. We would really need that.

Happy to see us promoting youth but I did not really expect him to come out and say we're interested in signing Sneijder anyway.

I still believe that will happen irrespective of what he says.

Classic Fergie.

United really do have a good strategic communications department.

With Pogba's promotion, does that leave us with any remaining first team spots ?

The whole "we're not discussing our targets in public" thing is done for one reason and one reason only: if it doesn't come to pass, he doesn't have to explain what went wrong. He can just say we were never interested.

Unlikely he'll sign now, unless something "changes very quickly," as David Gill put it.

Close thread.

Sneijder wasn't and won't be getting 250k a week. I honestly don't know where this nonsense comes from.

Managers and especially Fergie lie a lot. So I'm not reading too much into Fergie's comments.

Wasn't this thread just locked? Is all this Sneijder stuff actually driving me insane?

Why lock it? If you dont like it don t read it. Anyway, within 2 weeks maximum imo it will lose the momentum it gathered in the last few weeks.

The show is almost over....

I love Paul Scholes but lets be honest here- was he really that important last year? I might be wrong but in majority of games he performed in was badly off pace. yes his passing was top notch but without good engine he wasnt that influential. we wont be missing. Hargo at all and we are actually asking our youngsters to fill the gap left by ageing Scholes not a pass mastreo of 90‘s

I think Fergie wanted to extinguish the Sneijder rumours for the weekend to have full concentration on the West Brom match tomorrow.

Expect the saga to continue on Monday...

Thing is that scholes and gibson played more than 50 games between them last season. I dont expect cleverley to play so many games this season, so yes we do have a gap.
Also, i still think that fergie was planning to bring a new midfielder - otherwise he might have taken pogba to the US with the rest of the team. Not to mention Gibson's transfer that never materialized.

I'm all for giving youth a chance as long as it actually gets a decent shot instead of simply reverting to the tried and tested apart from the odd carling cup game.

I don't want it locked, I just thought it was locked for a few minutes for some reason before I posted.

True. Despite everything said about Pogba I don't think he'll be playing anything more than the odd Carling cup or Fa Cup game.

Which is why....Sneijder :)

When we say youth, I think we are talking more along the lines of Anderson and Cleverley, i.e. the younger players currently at the club, rather than Pogba. True Pogba will only get a handful of games, but its more a chance for him to see how the first team works and get used to it all. But for Cleverley / Ando and others it is a chance for them to really stake a claim in the first team.

This is the end
Wesley my friend
This is the end
No transfers now, the end
Of our elaborate plans the end
No kleenex or F5, the end
I'll never buy my Sneijder 9 shirt then

He may not have been as important as in the years before but he was (with Giggs) our main creative spark in CM. Now Scholes is gone and Giggs is a year older. The rest had ample time to prove that they are at the same level but had failed to proved that at least on a week in week out basis. I have full faith in Cleverley, in fact I had mixed feelings on loaning him to Wigan last year. However I think that we're relying too much on him to perform.

We'll still get Sneijder. They can deny it all they wont talks are ongoing.

I doubt it. CM is the equivalent to the defense department after the treble winning side. SAF will dig his heels and stick to cheap replacements/the current talent until its pretty evident that he can't keep on doing that anymore.
