Wesley Sneijder

It does make me laugh how any articles that allude to Sneijder being a step closer to Old Trafford are questioned by the "non-muppets" and they dismiss it as bollocks.... then when an equally credible article says the deal is off the "non-muppets" jump on it as if it is gods honest truth and from the mouth of Ferguson himself.

wr8_utd's reaction...

If there are no developments on this by morning I'm deleting this thread.

Its an embarrassment!

EDIT: Regardless of how much moaning WR8 does!

Manchester United have said they do not expect Wesley Sneijder to join the club from Internazionale before the end of the transfer window.

Except they haven't.

Although the Premier League champions did not want to go on the record

Of course.

the official stance from Old Trafford

is that the deal is not going to happen. The information comes from boardroom level, with the chief executive, David Gill, giving his approval for it to be known that United are not actively trying to sign the Dutchman.

Except that he hasn't.

That position can feasibly change

Quality article. If one were being cynical, of course...

I am well past caring at this point. I refuse to re-enter this thread unless I see him on TV, standing beside Fergie in a United shirt. At the press conference to unveil him as our latest signing.

Looks like that's that then.

I wonder if the extra few million will make up for not having played for Utd when he retires.

Do you not think that there's far too many sources now reporting this for it to be dismissed GCHQ?

I presume you're referring to our reported interest in Sneijder as opposed to this news tonight. I think our reported interest has been blown out of all proportion to be honest. Yes we might have taken him if the financial package wasn't completely ludicrous but the chance of that happening with this deal was always going to be nigh on impossible.

If we've always known that there's no real possibility of signing him, surely we'd have brought in someone else?

So United are 'coming to the press' in attempt to have Sneijder lower his fee demands....

Why else come out publicly if not simply to put pressure on the player. It would be foolish to think however that negotiations would only last a day or two either.

You could take that latest news as gospel that it's dead in the water or just United's way of playing it cool.

Either way - nobody knows so nothing changes.

Certainly how i'm taking it. Especially when the ding bat taylors article states "Utd source that didn't want to be named"

Thats simply a, "ive got about as much of an idea as you so i'll just make shit up"

Plus - why would United (if it was them) even bother releasing a statement to say that they weren't / or were no longer interested in Sneijder. Makes no sense. If they weren't interested they would simply say nothing. If they were after somebody else high profile then they would welcome the ongoing Sneijder story.

I won't be too unhappy if we don't get him.

Thomas Cleverley.
Paul Pogba.
Ravel Morrison.
Darron Gibs....er...

Call my naive but given what Ian McGarry has been tweeting over the past 2 days in that talks have been ongoing this story certainly has come at the right time. Could be a case of the media playing a guessing game but I'm not so sure....

Seems to me that pre USA tour we held talks and came to no conclusion hence the Fergie quotes of no real interest and Gill's all deals are dead comments. We've since returned from the states and as the Pope is Catholic Gills other comments that things could change when they get back to Carrington final talks have indeed taken place and like pre USA tour we've failed to reach an agreement.

I've been very optimistic throughout this window that a deal for Sneijder would happen sooner or later and just as I've believed all those stories that our interest is genuine I believe that the club have now called time on this.

Sneijder wont drop his wage demands, why would he? Who in their right mind would leave their job to go get paid less elsewhere? Likewise we're not going to make a new signing (one that's 27 and already breaks our transfer policy as it is) our top earner, that's something that has to be earned. Hernandez and Smalling have just been given new contracts only a year into their previous ones because they earned it. Regardless of the way it panned out Rooney was made (by all accounts) our top earner because his performances on the pitch deserved it. I may be wrong but I cant see Fergie sanctioning any new signing to come in and straight away earn more than his established new team mates.

I expect one of two things to happen at tomorrows press conference;

1- the media will be told - no questions about transfers leading to further hope that not all is lost yet or....
2- Fergie will finally say something conclusive, not a hint of a vague no real interest or a nothing happening at the moment, something conclusive!!! Such as No we wont be making anymore signings or No we wont be signing Wesley Sneijder

Of course the question is where do we go from here if Sneijder doesn't sign? I'd imagine for him it's now or never as we certainly wont be back in for him next summer when he's 28, Nasri could be an option for the future but he looks increasingly likely to sign for City in this transfer window so back to plan A and Modric? I dont think he'll be leaving Spurs this summer but surely any future windows we'll still be competing with Chelsea for him.
Alternatively of course Anderson & Cleverley could take the world by storm this season negating the need to sign anyone in the foreseeable future, if you consider next summer both Pogba and Morrison may be very close to first team places as well. Another possibility is of someone else coming on the scene during the next 12 months. Who knows.

Excuse me did I miss a meeting. Anytime someone talks about a transfer they're called muppet. Why did it become unfashionable to talk about players who might join a football club that you support?

In the last few months I've heard Evra, Scholes, Cantona, Rafael, Meulensteen all talk about players who might join our club yet noone here called them muppets!

Anyway - this latest development doesn't mean the deal is off at all. It's just the latest turn in our negotiating strategy.

We've had talks over the past few days and the ball seemed to have been left in our court (i.e. can we budge?). Obviously we've had a board meeting and we'd rather the ball in WS's court (i.e. will he budge). Nothing's changed except we're putting a rather official line on it by allowing our stance on this to leak to the press.

However, Sneijder is a crafty character having said very little this summer and then pretty much admits that talks are due to take place and that he'd like to move to OT (as does van der Vaart). To me he seemed to have made up his mind.

Chances are the powers that be at OT know this and have decided they want someone who's prepared to move heaven and earth to be at this club because that is the way this club works!

The word muppet has not been mentioned in the last 3 pages apart from yourself and Pexbo.

In the end I think it will meet half way if it does go through. Nike may potentially stump up a bit of cash aswell. The point of contract negotiations are that they are just that. You fling shit at each other until something sticks that both parties agree too. He won't sign a contract in just two days of negotiating nor will we cave in to their initial demands. It will probably take a week before something is sorted. We're not signing mercenaries like City who will pay anything, this is a transfer of sublime talent that's already at a big club.

Sneijder isn't an idiot either. He knows that United would raise not only his own, but his wifes profile higher, which means more then likely, larger personal sponsor income.

lock this thread until sept 1st please

Or you could just not come into it?

I really dont get logic and attitude like this. If you dislike a thread so much, why go into it? If others are participating in the thread constructively (and it has been constructive since it was last locked), what gives you the right to decide it should be locked/deleted?

This isnt an attack on you ramshock, its a general thing that happens in other threads as well, and i dont really understand the logic behind it personally.

People have been saying this for weeks now.

You can't have it both ways. The same could apply to the likes of both Toure's, Nasri, Aguero, Tevez (although different circumstances), Balotelli, Silva etc.

It amazes me how people can't see the hypocrisy in what they are saying in this thread. We laugh at the Scousers (overhyping potential signings) and City (throwing big money about), yet advocate us doing the same thing and try to make out it is different.

This. Well said Mickey.

I don't like or dislike him either way, Taylor wrote basically nothing. Some unnamed (probably because he doesn't exist) source has told him its off but it could actually happen anyway. That's some fantastic journalism there, thanks Daniel. One of those two things will definitely happen.

Maybe we are taking Van der Kraan's advice and trying to drag it out as much as we can to the end of the window.

We are not buying players just for the sake of our rivals not getting them nor are we getting players in positions where we are stacked with very good players.

Liverpool have spent exorbitant sums of money on English players which no one else would do. I mean come on, Carroll and Henderson combined for £55m? We are not that stupid.

City basically buy players so their rivals don't get them. They have enough quality in their side to post a title challenge, yet they do not stop buying. At least they should buy in areas which need strengthening, namely their defense. There is clearly a difference between the dealings we do and the dealings City do. Plus we don't spend huge sums every summer like City have been doing over the past three summers.

I can't believe you can't see the difference between how the two clubs of Manchester are run.

I honestly have doubts that we want him in the first place.
