What if our midfield has improved? Maybe Anderson gets better or Cleverley and Pogba push on.

'Ifs' and 'maybes', its a bit of a gamble counting on an inconsistent Anderson and an inexperienced Cleverley to replace the gap left by Paul Scholes.

Maybe so, but I can't really see Fergie letting this problem go unresolved. With all the talk of signing Sneijder, the name Anderson seems to have been forgotten. I expect big things from him this year such as improved concentration and a willingness to lead. His goals towards the end of last season will have boosted his confidence. It's time for him to repay Fergie's faith and patience. .

We've been saying this for the last couple of seasons though "this is his year", its almost scouse-esque. He has shown glimpses of brilliance last season, but he also did so the season before that, and the season before that. With Anderson you'll get one great game where he'll boss the midfield, assert himself and even get a goal, but then in the next game hell be anonymous and fruitless. I really want him to develop into the world class player we all hope he becomes, but I don't think we should gamble with a position as crucial as CM.

Tom Cleverley's experience at Wigan will stand him in good stead. He can only improve as part of the first team squad and has proved that he's willing and able to get stuck in. A great prospect and he's home grown. You want lads in there who'll fight for the shirt and his team mates through loyalty and love for the club and not just a big pay packet. That's the United way..

I have to admit, I've been pretty excited from what I've seen from Cleverley. I would very much like him to be an integral part of our squad this season, but I don't see him being the answer to our midfield deficiencies.....yet.
As for the loyalty and money aspect, as much as I agree we still have to accept that the game has completely changed, and nowadays if you want to stay at the pinnacle of European football, you have to spend big on both transfers and wages.

Can't argue with that. I don't want to see us getting laced in the EC final again either but don't you think that Anderson and Cleverley can make the difference between this year and last? Bringing in a big name is all well and good but if Ando and Cleverley perform to the best of their abilities, then we ought to go with them.

Again, its a huge gamble that we're relying on both Anderson and Cleverly to play consistently to the best of their abilities throughout the season. If the manager thinks they can then fair play, but from here it looks like we need an established midfielder to ease our weakness somewhat. Don't forget that its a squad game now, so even if we sign someone like Sneijder, both Anderson and Cleverley would still get plenty of games.

Thing is people have expected big things from Anderson for the past three seasons and he never delivered. He was good during a few weeks of last season, mainly at Old Trafford, but he never reached consistency level that would make him an important player for us. At 23 he still has time to improve but I doubt he will ever reach heights he was once tipped to reach. Back in the days when we signed him he was dubbed as a new Ronaldinho and second best young player after Messi, at the minute he's an average PL midfielder.

Agreed. I hope he makes me eat my words but I think he's not developed into a very good player...

I'd say he's actually come quite a long way. He had a great first season but was very inconsistent, he showed flashes of brilliance but had quite a few poor games and was worse in his second season.

Appearance by appearance he's was great last season, the inconsistency is now down to his fitness and the fact he doesn't play enough games and enough minutes in those games but the games and minutes he does play his performances have been consistently better.

If that makes sense, his next challenge is to improve his fitness and in turn, be the player we know he is capable of being.

35m for Sneijder is a lot of money.

Inter CEO
But Paolillo has said a top offer from England will be evaluated and did not close the door on his man leaving if United submit a suitable bid.

"If an offer we cannot refuse arrives, whether for Sneijder or other players, then we will start to think about a replacement," Paolillo is quoted as saying by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Sneijder is a reference point for our club, but then football always evolves and anything can happen.

"But there are no talks, and so we are not thinking of changing."

Inter are interested in Brazilian midfielder Casemiro.

Inter bought Sneijder for €15 million two years ago. He has given them 2 great seasons where they have won a Champions League.

Selling him for £35mil would be great business for them. I dont think Inter are short of cash, but i could imagine that £35mil + getting a player who earns €250k a week of the wage bill, would be an attractive proposition for Massimo Moratti.

They most definitely are...

They most definitely are...

Aye they've got the worst wages:turnover rate of any club in the Serie A, and if the figures were correct I'd suggest they're the worst of any club in a top league. Christ knows how it got that bad though.

I think Anderson's shown a lot of ability if not consistency to play at a very high level. Sneijder on the other hand has shown a consistent high level for Inter after being a very highly rated player for while - that was at 25 years of age. He wasn't consistently performing for Madrid - hence why he was sold on the cheap to Inter.

On the matter of "ifs". There are "ifs" should Sneijder come to United. If he performs at the same level as he has for Inter. If he does it in a new league. Sneijder's big plus over Anderson is not that when he is at his best that he is a miles better, just that he's done it consistently. When Anderson plays at his best, I think he'd be on par with Sneijder.

So the question is do we pay 35m and 200k in wages for Sneijder this year when we have both Ando/Cleverly in the wings or perhaps give them a chance to stake their claim? And perhaps next year look at the likes of Nasri or Modric who are proven in this league and would probably be cheaper than Sneijder, if it looks like we don't have the answer already in our ranks.

If Sneijder does come to us this season, great, fantastic, wunderbar; as he has proven his class but, if he doesn't then I have faith that we stand a good chance to do a lot better this season than we did last year with the players we have and there are still some options out there that are as good if not better suited to us next season that we can go for should Ando/Cleverly not progress as we hope.

Nah it was more along the lines whether or not he could imagine to have a player from Netherlands.

Talksport with the same story that Sneijder will definitely be a United player next week after the Milan match.

Ferguson & Meulensteen we're asked about Sneijder by a dutch reporter during Edwin's testimonial. Meulensteen said that if it was up to him Sneijder would definitely come to United.

Our squad and staff is full of muppets.

'Inter Milan chief executive Ernesto Paolillo gave an interview to Rai Sport':

Paolillo, what are the chances of Wesley Sneijder's departure being announced after the derby in Beijing?

"As things stand at the moment there is no chance of that happening, despite what you might read in the papers. There are no negotiations underway to sell Sneijder. He is a key part of our club."

In England they are saying the opposite is true...

"Well actually I read a statement made by Manchester United chief executive David Gill in which he said something very different."

But if there were negotiations and if Sneijder did leave in the end, are Inter considering dipping into the market to buy a replacement?

"If there are steps to be taken, you take them one at a time, otherwise you run the risk of tripping up. And at the moment no steps need taking so we certainly aren't thinking about any replacements. If – and this goes for Sneijder as it does for any other player – we were to receive an offer that we simply couldn't refuse, then and only then would we think about replacements. But, I repeat, there are no negotiations at the moment so we aren't thinking about how to change anything at all. PS Sell Gibson, sign Sooty."
