Way to ruin the only thing that made you interesting Cass. Spastic.

Sounds like

Ferg: What was that quote(?) the other day
Cass: .........I can show you my copy I sent. Do you think I'd..(?) Eh?
Ferg: Don't (I'm no') say(in) another word. You and your paper can feck off.

Just reading online it seems the story was changed from the quotes being Fergie's to a "United insider". Does anyone know if that's true?

Yeah, I sad that above. They've definitely changed the online story, but not the title.

Between Daniel Taylors shit about Fergies miscommunication about Berba and this, the press really are scum. But it's the idiots who believe everything they read in the press that make it possible.

I'd still wager Fergie gave him an off-the-record interview (or at least he thought it was) and Cass either chanced his arm or the paper changed it knowing he'd gotten it from Fergie. I don't think a (seemingly) respectable journo like Cass would risk losing access to Fergie by making up quotes like that.

The damage is done anyway. Those 'quotes' could have stopped any chance of a deal.

I think this is close to the truth. The Guardian also said it was what they believed to be true and as far as I know Fergie hasn't told them to feck off.

That is fairly plausible, and my guess too.

Just out of interest, does anyone still think that we don't want to sign him?

The more I think about it and the way he looked I suspect he sent it in as 'an insider' and when they spoke to him and he confirmed it was Fergie they went with the sensational angle, regardless of whatever Cass and Fergie had agreed (though I suspect if it's a longstanding relationship it's generally unspoken). Nice way to ruin a relationship that the DM benefitted from far more than Fergie.

Cantona exclusive: United should buy Sneijder - he's the new me

Eric Cantona has urged Manchester United to land £35million Wesley Sneijder, insisting: "He reminds me of myself."

As reported by the Mirror earlier this week, Inter Milan midfielder Sneijder is mulling over an offer to quit Serie A and become Old Trafford's record signing.

United legend Cantona said: "Sneijder is one of the best. He will be great for the team."

The Frenchman returns to Old Trafford this week, 14 years after his retirement from the Reds, for Paul Scholes' testimonial.

And Cantona has fully endorsed 27-year-old Sneijder's ability to inherit the mantle from Scholes.

Speaking at the London launch of a book on iconic US side New York Cosmos, where he is now director of soccer, Cantona said: "Sneijder is an excellent player.

"He is what Manchester United needs. There's no-one like him right now.

He's strong. Sometimes he reminds me of myself."

Cantona established himself as one of the best players in United's history during his time at the club.

He is regarded as playing a key role in re-establishing the club as a force after leading the Class of '92 to four Premier League titles in his five years there.

Cantona also clinched two League and FA Cup Doubles.

Inter have repeatedly played down the chances of Sneijder leaving the San Siro, maintaining he will play in this weekend's Super Cup game against AC Milan in Beijing.

Inter's chief executive officer, Ernesto Paolilli, said yesterday: "Sneijder is here and he's an important part of our team."

Inter coach Gian Piero Gasperini said earlier this week: "He's playing for us, training with us and he'll play on Saturday. There is no Sneijder problem."

United, however, have until the end of the month to seal the deal.

And earlier this week Sneijder himself refused to rule out a move to the Premier League champions.

The midfielder, who would have to his Inter wages of £250,000 a week slashed, said: "There is always a chance something will happen but we will see."

Kind of adds up.

Looks as though Fergie goes for him and then Cass is wanting to defend himself (it was the paper not me gov) by saying "I can can show you the copy I sent...." at which point Fergie just keeps walking and tells him and his paper to FO leaving Cass looking a bit deflated.

This is the most plausible.

Cass shares a good relationship with SAF and usually has good inside info. He'd be foolish to give up this sort of access for one piece. Especially with the Mail changing its story now.

We've had all our ex players tap up Sneijder

Oh and our coaching staff too!

Sounds like the copy Cass submitted said "source" and someone else attributed the quote to SAF. D'oh!

Dunno how you can agree with Brophs that the SAF is pissed off over the DM failing to conceal their sources and see this as proof that people who believe what they publish are idiots. If Brophs's interpretation is true - and it probably is - the issue here is the press being too truthful.

Has the Mail changed the story? It now has a 'source said' instead if Fergie even though the title of the story says Fergie said it.

fecking hell. All the muppets saying 'Bob Cass is Fergies mate so it must be true' and yet it sounds like the Mail were just making stuff up. May even have changed Cass's story without his knowledge.

You said this and then in the next post directly contradicted what you're saying here by agreeing to what Brophs said.

Well, so far we're not even sure if it's Cass and what they're talking about since as Maciek pointed out the video is from before the actual quotes that people assume they're talking about appeared in Mail.

It is Cass and the article was online just before KO. The video is from after the match.

I think we're fairly certain that it is Cass, the quotes appeared on the Mail website on the 30th of July (perhaps even earlier). The version you see now is an edited version of the original story.

But why did Fergie get so angry about it? Was it because Cass was his friend and he didnt expect him to use his quotes or is it because it's something completely made up...or is there something going on about Sneijder?

SAF says the quote (from memory it was something like "There's a contract on the table, its up to him to accept it")was made up. Cass seems to be alledging that the Daily Heil either twisted SAF's words or made something up.

I thought it was about him saying something like United losing patience and if he didnt accept United's offer it's his own fault and that they have someone other in mind in case.

EDIT:
That's the article I thought Fergie was relating to:

You blew it Sneijder, insists United boss who is confident with current midfield crop | Mail Online

Paddy C on newstalk in Ireland this morning said he thinks Sneijder is odds on to sign if he. accepts united reasonable contract offer

I actually really start to think that those rumours might be true...the ones claiming it's all down to him and whether he accepts our wage offer and that he will probably make his decision sooner than we think.

This is the most plausible.

As you say its not just access they are/were friends. Fergie doesn't tend to consider many journalists friends but Bob Cass was definately someone he has, for years, trusted. That trust has been shattered so you can appreciate Sir Alex being angry. However, I really don't think Cass would risk his friendship with the Boss for a throw away story cos lets face it if he doesn't accept the money we wont sign him is hardly a massive exclusive. I'm inclined to believe what some have suggested that the online editor knowing Cass' source inserted the name without Cass giving him the nod to do it.

Either way it confirms our interest in Sneijder is real. Now lets see where it goes from here.

Hail SAF.

A true legend.

I really don't want an overpaid Sneijder at the club.

feck Cass, all reporters are the same, they can't help themselves.... ugly little fecker.

If you'd seen Cass have umpteen goes at SAF on SS Hacks prog then you'd never believe they were mates
