Wesley Sneijder

My main concern with him is that he'll go the same way in our system that Aquilani did in Liverpool's (brought in to replace a deep lying player when they're a more advanced player, played deep because the team's best/talismanic player is occupying their usual best position, has mediocre season).

Even so, his wage demands, if true, are extortionate. Do Xavi and Iniesta even earn that?

Um, yes. They are 2 of the highest paid players in world football. If the Portuguese website Football Finance is to be believed then, in basic salary alone, they are 15th and 16th, with Sneijder down at #86. There seems to be an odd misconception that just because they came through Barca's youth system that must mean they are paid pennies.

^^ according to that site, Sneijder is on less than 70k/week
not sure that site is reliable

So you're saying that the success he brought Inter entitles him to more with us? Obviously Sneijder sees it this way if what we are hearing is true, but look at what I said again. We never have an issue with paying top wages to a player that has brought us the success. They generally have to earn it first, but this would be the first time that a player has walked in and demanded to be top earner, or thereabouts. And this is where it doesn't sit well with me.

I could go on further to discuss the potential drawbacks to signing him, such as the fact that he could flop or may not work. Or the fact that he wasn't that great when faced with the biggest test of his career. Or the fact that he seems to be living off the hype of one season a couple of years ago. This doesn't sound like a 'world class' player that you throw money at to get him here. Obviously you will say 'but he's a top player' etc. etc., but these are considerations that a well run club has to have in mind before straight up offering him in with huge wages. I'm sure we have considered these possibilities and this is part of the reason why I'm still not convinced that we are that bothered about signing him.

Obviously we have targets of player X,Y and Z, but I've never heard of us struggling to convince a player to sign for us because of wages, as has been suggested here. It's new to me, and I can't see myself taking to this sort of player, so that is perhaps why I have my reservations.

I really struggle to think why he's been labelled as a world class player though. I think it's a pedestal that certain United supporters have put him on through desperation to see him sign.

Fergie himself admitted in his autobiography that he had been keen to sign Batistuta, Desailly and the original Ronaldo but the plc's limitations had prevented him from offering the required wages, even though, as he said, talent is not democratic and if there's a player who could elevate the team to the next level, that should be reflected in his salary as well (Fergie's words, not mine).

Gasperini, in the press room, isn't intimidated by the English reporters who wave Wesley Sneijder to Manchester United or Samuel Eto'o to City in his face.

"The transfer market closes on 31 August and we have all been trained to live with these rumours for the duration of the season. I'm not worried or annoyed by these rumours and neither are the players. They are Inter players, they play their hearts out for Inter in any situation and they showed that today.

People talk a lot about the transfer market but at the end of the day everything is just like it was at the start. Have Manchester United put in a bid for Sneijder? I don't know and I don't care, but it's not unusual for great players to be in greater demand. Inter's great players are, as are those from other clubs, but if you are sure that the player has received an offer, I'll remind you that Sneijder is under contract to Inter, so if there is a bid it should be made to Inter ... Sneijder plays for Inter, Eto'o plays for Inter, Tevez plays for Manchester City: this is real life, not what you read or hear in the media.

Now all of us here, club and team are concentrating on Beijing, on the Italian Super Cup. After that there will be another 25 days of the transfer window and we'll see if anything happens. I'll say it again: all too often rumours are spread for months and then, when it's all over everything is exactly as it used to be."

In that YouTube interview he cuts himself off - classic redirect. He lists the 'big competitions' Holland, Spain, Italy, then says 'and now...', stops himself, looks down then changes to 'I'm still here'. In terms of sequential category organisation the next in the list would be another 'big competition'.

ITS ON!!!

He meant Dublin Cup!

Most certainly some deflecting going on in the interview and he looks kinda embarrassed at the end when asked about Manchester United.

I wouldn't say that proves he's coming but I think its more likely now than I thought it had been in recent weeks.

Just did a quick scan with my muppetometer, and I'm pleased to report that, as a result of Gasperini's interview, the chances of us signing Sneijder have risen from 41.2045% to 41.8733%! Good work, lads!

I found his answers interesting. i.e

Journalist: are you happy to be linked with United?
Sniejder: ''I'm a happy guy...'' (then went on to imply he'd be happy anywhere. Even in Manchester then. at the end..)

Journalist: ''Are you flattered to be linked with Manchester united''
Sneijder (Greening): ''I'm not''

I really hope that IF we sign anyone that it is someone that would be completely of the medias radar.

It's on!!!

Having seen that interview I'm convinced he's desperate to sign for us. Just time for us to make it happen now..

Course he's desperate - it's a massive step up from West Brom. His attempts to impersonate Sneijder are not likely to go unnoticed by SAF though

Excitement, she wrote.

It's so obvious we've made contact and he's interested in joining.

I'm trying to work out a time-scale here.

If the quotes from the Inter manager were true 'talk to us not Sneijder' then I think we've only negotiations with Inter to conclude the deal. Sneijder obviously wants us, he wants us so bad. Like that Beatles song.
