We desperately need a right back

I don't think we need a right back. We have 3 of them in Valencia, Rafael and McNair all of whom, while not world class, are certainly good enough.

Valencia has done a good job this season and really improved the defensive aspects of his game. We just need to get a therapist for him to sort out his bi-polar attack condition he has and we'll be fine. He's the oddest player I've ever seen. Some games he'll be more than willing to attack the full back and put in a cross and the next he'll go back to being turn back Tony. We sort that out and he's the best fullback we got.

Rafael is good enough, but the issue is the injuries which make him unreliable and equate to him being a squad player.

There's potential in Paddy as a right back and right back is probably where he can find a spot in the team. We're clearly going to sign a CB in the summer and that will push him way down the pecking order there.

The RB doesn't have to be stand-out, just a solid player.

Azpilicueta was relatively unknown when we signed him--I was questioning it when Debuchy was available and already played in the league. Turns out, the scouts know more than I do.

Regretfully, this looks the most likely - and sensible - scenario. Rafa isn't getting a look in these days and his days appear to be numbered.

Clyne and Valencia are good right back options.

We haven't had a consistent right back in so long I've almost forgotten what one in a MUFC jersey looks like.
I'm off to youtube Gary Neville clips.

Rafael is not good enough even when he is at his 100%

That post is complete BS.
On form Raphael is one of the best RB's in the league.

The problem is he is only on form 5-10 games a season....if that much.

If dortmund don't get cl football (and we do) then piszczek would be worth looking at
Would be 30 by the start of next season but a solid player who would be class for a few seasons - plus his height would be a help defensively and offensively at set pieces

I'm not gonna do a yes vs no thing, as for 4-3-3, in a proper version one of the 3 midfielders is an AM/#10 and it's 3 versatile forwards rather than an actual pure #9 and two wingers, usually both players who start wide are inverted.

As far as I am concerned, if you have 2 holding midfielders and an AM, its a 4-2-3-1 (or some variant thereof). If its 4-3-3, thats a single DM and two proper CMs in front of him.

Danilo from Porto is the next in a seemingly never-ending line of world class Brazilian wing backs.

We should be all over him.

We've had scouts at almost every Porto game this season so I wouldnt be surprised if it is him were watching. Decent video of him here

He had probably 1 really good season.
Even on form 5 to 10 games doesnt make you the best in the league,He has no consistency as he's always injured.

That is fair.
It is his better games that stand out in my mind.
With all his fitness issues in the last few seasons it's really something to think that we never really had cover for him either.

We've had scouts at most of Porto's games? Interesting. I certainly hope it is for Danilo and not Jackson Martinez. I've only seen Danilo play a few times but he looks to have a better all round game than Clyne, and granted I am partially basing that off the video above as well as what I've seen in said matches.

@Arruda He seems pretty useful with his left foot, can he play LB as well?

Could do with a proper right back would instantly improve us both going forward and in defence. Valencia over Rafael for dependable cover for me. Rafael can go and become an injury stat elsewhere, we got to be ruthless and cull the squad.

Another match day when we hope to see hi get his chance. Clearly, the lad is match fit, so if he's not even on the bench today then I guess his days are numbered. McNair ahead of him on the bench due to versatility and Valencia deemed first choice.

If only Barca had something like a transfer ban or something so we could avoid that situation.

oh wait.

While I think we do need a right back and if we were to go for one I think Clyne would be perfect, although I don't think it's as much of a priority as a CB or CM or striker. Until then I would like to see Ashley Young on the right. He has undoubtedly been one of Uniteds best players all season (when fit) and was their best player during pre-season and that was mainly playing out of position on the left side, he did have a couple of games on the right and was even better than he has been playing on the left. With Shaw fit he should be playing left back and move Ashley over to the right so he doesn't have to keep coming inside so he can cross with his right foot.

If and when United get a right sided defender/wing back then Young should be moved up to right winger in his favoured position. I said it time and again when Young was injured that he was the one that provided the spark and always has the impetus to go forward rather than just pass side to side. I'm so pleased for the lad as he always plays with a smile on his face and is obviously great to have around. He has proved to have great versatility and be an extremely useful player, I personally think he has also shown that when fit, he absolutely has to play.

Oh yeah, you get what i mean though.

He will move for peanuts whilst we spunk a fortune on some 27 year old cnut who everyone thinks is mint because he scores a few goals.

We will go for Clyne IMO. His contract also expires in 2016, but he won't come cheap though.

Na for the sake of balance... A right back is our top priority followed by a centre midfielder.

Clyne would be my first choice, Danilo is an interesting option also but i haven;t seen enough of him to judge.

Rafael is decent but unreliable and cannot be depended upon.

I can see your point, but you put right back over a CB?

I would I think Smalling and Rojo will prove to be an excellent pairing plus a right back will improve them as would a settled back 4. Would be nice to get a settled back 4 & GK. I think with Shaw Rojo and Smalling we could have 3 out of the 4 already in place. (DDG I hope he commits but the longer he doesn't the more ominous it looks)

I'm a big fan of Rafael but it doesn't seem Van Gaal is, which is a shame. Regardless, top squads have options at full back and we need that.

Valencia's a good right back now, always puts a shift in and has improved his defensive work hugely, but he isn't a long term option.

McNair has impressed at right back and should be a decent option in both positions but I can't imagine he'll be our regular starter for a while.

Clyne looks a great option and is a great age too. One of the most prolific tacklers in the league and a constant threat bombing forward.

It seems pretty nailed on that Danilo will go to Barca with Alves moving on. Coleman would be a good option too but would likely be more difficult to get and a little older too.

Yeah I can see your point. I agree Smalling is our best option as CB (to partner Rojo) but with Evans being a complete liability recently and with Jones always injured and Smalling not having the best injury record either, I would still put a CB above a right back. I also think an experienced CB would help balance the team and add stability to the back 4. We could then rest easy a little knowing that if someone got injured we could have a decent option on the bench. As I said above, I think Clyne is a good fit and it seems he could be available for around £20m which isn't a bad price for a young defender with premier league experience.

I can hardly disagree with you, but I think we may have our future centre half pairing in Smalling and Rojo whilst I don't think Rafael or Valencia will be our long term right back. Plus I think we'd automatically improve the starting 11 with a specialist right back. I'm not 100% sold on Clyne yet I'd prefer Coleman as it stands or even another alternative.

Danilo is an outside option for sure, he's been good for a while now. Clyne/Coleman are still most people's choices though and I'm inclined to agree. Any of them would greatly improve the defence.

I want a right back who can defend. None of the names mentioned so far (that I recognise) fit the bill. For me, Clyne has always looked like an accident waiting to happen.
