We desperately need a right back

I hope our scouts are on it, because Coleman or Clyne would be fairly expensive.

Not convinced either would be an improvement either.
Im sure theres better full backs out there but im pretty happy with valencia tbh.

They'd only be a significant upgrade because they'd be less injured than Rafael, so I'm still unsure it'd be worth our while spending big money of 'em. I'd imagine there's cheaper alternatives somewhere in Europe.

Well i meant an improvement over valencia ...
I know not many would agree with that though so I dont feel particularly inclined to debate it tbh.

Nah, we'll certainly bring in a right back, it's widely reported as a position of urgency. Valencia will feature as our back up. Rafael will be regretfully sold and McNair could well find himself out on loan.

It was pushed quite a lot by the media in the run up to the January window but I just get the feeling LvG is impressed with Valenbcia and McNair. I guess if we are as interested in Marquinhos he also plays RB which would suit LvG and his love of "multifunctional" players.

I think the same.Valencia,Janko and/or McNair might be our RB options for next season though I'm not really sure if it won't turn out to be a disaster. We still managed to survive with a rash 19-20 years old Rafael in the past so it's not the worst scenario.

He may well want to give those 2 young players a chance with Valencia as his sturdy safety net, it's not that weak a position IMO and if we had top quality at RCB I think it would greatly help out whichever of the RB's we use.

I think we should buy John Stones and have him fill in at RB when Valencia/Rafael are injured or unavailable.

McNair has really impressed me when given the chance at right back he looks good with the ball at his feet and defends well he also has some descent pace in him. If he is given time I think he could develop into a really good fullback.

Let's not do the whole 'screw up the best centre-back prospects by playing them at fullback' thing again.

It mightn't be popular but I still think Phil Jones is a better RB than CB.

I think he'll play them in the pre-season and make a final judgement whether he'll want a new RB.Don't think he will buy one early this time round. He will buy a striker first IMO (and a CB with Evans is shipped out early).

Unless we have an astonishing transfer budget, it seems like a poor use of resources to me. Looking at their respective Squawka stats, I don't see Clyne or Coleman as being vastly superior to Valencia. Coleman's stats last season look decent but Clyne gives the ball away a lot and the goals + assists numbers wouldn't have you rushing to make a change at vast expense.

Valencia has been significantly better than Shaw so I'm struggling to see why it's a priority.

I don't understand why are people so impressed.

He was great against 4th league side who were unable to defend on a big pitch of Old Trafford size and then below par against Burnley, often of the pace, Smalling covering for him all the game, and was unable to make a single dribble, Any good combination on the right line. He has a good eye for the pass and can actually pass but as right back you need pace and strength and he doesn't have it. We will se how he develops but he will need maybe two season at least , depending on how much game time he will get, to be decent for us against bigger sides than Burnley or Cambridge at home...

And I don't think it is so needed to buy RB, Rafael is still our best player and if he can play 25 games a season the rest can play Valencia and Young, both written off before the season player will come handy I guess, Young can alter between left and right if possible..

Let's face it Rafael is as good as gone, unless LVG was sacked before the sumer.I will keep him if it was my decision but you and me both are not our manager.

I agree, I think it will be low priority compared to CM, CB and a forward.

Torn about the need for another RB. Love Rafael, but he's injury prone, while Valencia has proven to be more than adequate. In fact, I prefer him at RB instead of RM, as he offers less at RM than others who can play there. Plus McNair does offer some depth, but I haven't seen him showing the pace that Rafael & Valencia have.

Based on who we've put out there as possible buys, I'd rather not. The price is too much for most, especially considering our other needs. If we found another up & comer on the cheap like Rafael, I wouldn't mind, but splashing out another 15-20 mil for this position just doesn't seem smart.

strangely, based on this years form I think Valencia is better than Rafael defensively and Rafael is perhaps better than Valencia offensively based on crossing ability

either way I think Valencia is the better option as Rafael has been a liability at times this year when he has played (Leicester/Chelsea springs to mind)

with Valencia as LVG's first choice RB its clear we have room for improvement there and I'd expect a signing in the Summer

Alves on a free has got to be worth a punt
If we decide to go with a back three he is more than capable of playing at wing back as well
Obviousley not a long term solution but a great stop gap till either Rafael finally develops into the player he could be or we find a viable alternative

Dani Alves, or Coleman. I still think Rafeal is a very valuable player, and hope LvG keeps him at the club.

Clyne is nothing special.

Dani Alves will be 32 by the start of next season and is past his best, and I am pretty certain Rafael will be sold.

Rafael is never fit. He's a good player when he is, but he isn't a world beater by any stretch of the imagination.

Agreed.

Im also not interested in seeing a dried up veteran coming in for one last payday (Alves)

A rb... What about a striker,cb,cm and a winger... No more need for a rb than these positions.

He'll be on a Bosman. Can't be that bad a player having been at Barcelona for many years. He still has a few years at the very top.
He's on the decline and would probably only come for the money. I really hope Van Gaal isn't considering this.

At what? Barcelona wants to get rid of him despite having no actual right back and transfer ban (sort of). Montoya is leaving aswell and that Douglas (?) is amateur level player. They play Pedro as right back.

Ok

I can't be paying much attention if he's digressed so much this season.
