We desperately need a right back

McNair would get torn apart by a world class winger, if we want to reach that level we need a new right back.

To be fair, I'd rather have Paddy McNair at right back ahead of Turnback Tony.

Manchester United and Manchester City ready to do battle for Brazilian star Danilo

MANCHESTER CITY and Manchester United are prepared to go head to head in the race for Porto defender Danilo.

The right back has turned the heads of a number of European giants including Real Madrid and now the two Manchester rivals have joined the chase.

According to Marca, the Brazilian is being viewed by Louis van Gaal as competition for fellow countryman Rafael.

And Manuel Pellegrini is said to have been impressed by the 23-year-old's attacking mindset from the right back position.

The Brazilian's contract expires next year, meaning a summer transfer is on the cards as Porto will undoubtedly want to cash in on the potential interest.

Porto are said to want around £20million for the young defender and will not be tempted by lower offers.

@Arruda He seems pretty useful with his left foot, can he play LB as well?

Never seen him play at LB before. He has experience in midfield before joining us, but as an inside right. For us he only ever played at RB.

Is at the best form in his career as well.

What is your opinion of Joao Cancelo mate ? Really like the look of him primarily based on the performances at Valencia. Is he talented enough and does he possess the mental toughness to play in a critical defensive position at a major club at such a young age ?

Could do with either your or @Sly's input. :)

Danilo has been very good this year and is attracting alot of interest (specially from Barcelona). I think he will move this year but he won't be cheap.

About João Cancelo i can't say that i know him well. I saw some games from him at Benfica B and that's it. He never had a chance at Benfica's main team. Maxi Pereira owns the spot and doesn't give many chances to subs or backups. At Valência i only watched two matches from him and in one of them he got subbed. Of the young players that left Benfica this year (Bernardo Silva, André Gomes and Ivan Cavaleiro) he's the one i rated the least. It's too early for me to say if he is going to become Valência´s main RB or if he is good enough to have a good internacional career. Hasn't shown enough for me to have a detailed opinion on him.

Thanks Arruda, so he could possibly operate as a RM in the diamond for example?

Do you think he'll stay another year and go to Barca on a free? Or will Porto make sure they get a good price for him this summer?

Going to be interesting to see what we do with regards to RB this summer that's for sure.

Rafael - surely on his way out, no room for broken players.
McNair - "our right back for the next 10 years". He really isn't at the level we require right now though.
Valencia - Doing a job for us and a good backup but again not at the level we require.

So what happens with Valencia and McNair? Well I can't see us getting rid of Valencia, his dependability seems to be a really popular attribute while McNair needs games if he's going to improve. So do we take the risk and leave ourselves with two sub-par Right Backs?

Personally I'd bring a top right back in of a good age 25-29 and either sell Valencia or loan McNair to a EPL team but both options seem unlikely.

We have a perfectly good RB who seems to be spending all of his time atm playing for the U21s.

@Arruda I know Danilo is very good going forward but is he one of those typical Brazilian full-backs that's excellent going forward but not so good defensively?

Danilo or Clyne are my first choices. The former has been strongly linked with Real Madrid recently.

whats the odds Danilo is a Jorge Mendes player.....

that guy has made some living from us!

If we want a young RB then we need to be looking at one of the following:
  • Danilo
  • Fabinho
  • Clyne
Might be beneficial to go for Clyne to keep the English nationality going. But Fabinho and Danilo are very good RB's!

I think he strikes a good balance, in fact I'd say he's better at defending overall. He pushes a lot forward and provides good support, but there isn't that much end-product.

I really don't know how he would work in a diamond formation, I just know he played in midfield in Brazil but haven't actually seen it.

Really doubt he'll go on a free, he has a great relationship with the club, most likely we'll make some money with him this season. If he stays another year I'm almost sure he'll renew his contract.

Thanks for the reply. He's certainly looked good going forward whenever I've seen him (albeit it just some of his CL performances) but if you think he is actually better defensively then that's very promising. He's 6 foot tall so should be able hold his own in the air too.

And not playing very well it should be added.

Watched Ajax vs PSV to see Depay but was impressed by their RB Santiago Arias, maybe he has caught our scouts eye when we have been following Memphis.

In fairness reserve performances mean boff-all, we lost a certain midfielder who would walk into our midfield (effortlessly past our current lot) due to that logic.

Rafael's problem is he's never fit, not his quality when he's up and running.

MEN reporting Danilo would cost £37m.

No thanks at that price.

Reports in Marca that he's agreed to join Real.

For those who watch Southampton on a regular basis, would Clyne be good enough to be our starting right back?

Compared to our other right backs? Yes he would. I don't think he's a considerable upgrade on Rafael, I rate Rafael very highly. But he is fit, he plays games. He's a very good full back. The longer the season goes on, the more I want him. It's clear we're in the market for a RB and he seems to be the best option for us at the moment.

Would that mean Carvajal is available?

I had this same thought. Carvajal is another solid RB who I think would be a good option for us. I thought Real rated him, so would be surprised to see him replaced. They only brought him back 2 seasons ago I think.

Unless the Danilo deal is official, don't bet on it. He is the future RB for Spain and he's homegrown, there's no way they'd sell him.

Arias was already a Sporting player but couldn´t get pass Sporting B. Must have evolved very well for him to impressing with you at PSV. There were some Sporting supporters that said that he deserved more than a couple of games as a chance but when i saw him, his defending was atrocious although he was good going forward and a decent crosser.
