Relieved but quite sad. Another 00's hero gone. Carrick and maybe Valencia the only ones left

Selling the "oldies" is a good thing.
We need new blood in the team and Jose needs to sign his own players - players who will be loyal to his cause and run through brick walls for him.
He appears to be attempting to sign players who are hardworking and willing to work hard. Some MUFC fans may not like this, but that's what Jose feels he needs to do, get win the title.
No doubt, Jose is putting a lot of pressure on himself, to win the title in his 2nd season.

And rest of the team, wait for captain fantastic's orders?
Well then mister, who would you give then our captain armband? I'm not sure we should give it to someone that's not british or is at the club less then 5 years. I think it's just embarassing for the likes of Valencia ... don't speak fluent english and that's why I think he shouldn't be our captain even though he is an icon of the club, always giving his best and starting the most of matches.

Like most threads, there's two extremes.... "Rooney's shite" and "Rooney's a legend/GOAT".

Like most threads, some middle ground is probably right.... a decent player and possibly top.10 at his peak, but longevity has played a huge part in his stats/records.

First ten seasons with us, yes he got double figures every season but he only beat 17 twice..... and the guys a forward? 17 is Mark Hughes levels, Ole levels (Ole got 10 or over most seasons too) .... but it's nowhere near the levels of great forwards in the last decade and a half (for example, Ruuds goals/season miles better.... different type of player granted but still forwards).

Also remember that he was playing at a top club with top players (a lot of the time) so you'd expect a half decent forward to get 10-15?

Decent player, excellent at his peak but not a legend for me. Loads of better players have been at United, loads of players more loved

Go to Everton, thanks, bye.

Rooney moves on, we lose that experience and consistency. He knows the club. I can't believe so many fans do not seem to value that. Be a massive void to fill if he leaves. No he isn't the player he was, but I never underestimate the guy.

Lindgaard, Mata, Fellani.... I wouldn't pick them over Rooney, no way. Even Martial and Mikatarhiyan flatter to deceive, although I apprecaite for Mika, it's only a season so far.

It's easy to be a Rooney-basher, always has been it seems ... but I love the guy and would love him to stay. Just my personal opinion. A decent, fit Rooney, somewhat rejuvenated Rooney adds 15 goals to our season, can any of those other names confidently state anything like that. And I mean big games.... ... I think he's a better footballer than those others named, yes, still.

Mourinho needs to be careful. He needs his team to be better than last season, a lot better to get even close, and getting rid of Rooney, isn't an answer for me. No way.

Watch the Carrick testimonial. In this match, Robbie Keane was the player who looked head and shoulders above, the retired defenders he was playing against.
Rooney on the other hand, was struggling against retired defenders in their 40s!

It's like people have not been watching him in the last 2-3 years.

Some people blind, mate.
In some games, I swear that the MUFC fans making comments on these boards have not seen a single game during the season.

Rooney did very well for us. All time goal scorer is all that needs to be said. He was a great, but right now he is not a EPL level footballer. In fact, I think he may even struggle in the Championship.

Good luck Wayne and enjoy playing for your favourite club.

I actually said he was playing like crap now, but he was a "great" for us, previously.

We were talking about England Vs Iceland at Euro 2016

Have to thank Rooney for the memories but he should have been gone in 2013. I'm not fussed where he goes or if we get anything for him, he looks finished as a professional footballer.

It really wasn't clear at all mate, now i'm not saying Rooney's agent is above using tactics like that i wouldn't put it past him or any agent. But after Ferguson dropped the news out of nowhere that Rooney wanted to leave Englands biggest club the tabloids needed stories to run and the most obvious one at that time to get clicks and papers sold was Rooney to Man City given their new found wealth.

Heres what keeps getting overlooked about that whole saga, his agent wouldn't have been planting stories linking him to other clubs to get a better contract offer because he wasn't angling for a raise. As confirmed in Fergusons book he really did just want to leave. He had been refusing to sign the contract he eventually did sign for close to 3 months, and had been keeping quiet about it. Had he just wanted a raise i imagine his agent probably would have been planting stories for months. Ferguson specifically says in his book that he didn't think it was about money with Rooney but it's sad that it will be spun that way and people will believe it.

You may be right, but that's not how I remember it. I remember reacting to it because suddenly every journo ran with it at the same time, not just random gossip. Even though they all print a lot of bullshit it's still easy to spot when they've all been briefed - and, to me, it was clear that day that it was a briefing from Rooney's camp. And the reactions from the fans and the so-called MIB happened because it looked like it was. It was the same when it suddenly came out that Rooney was "angry and confused" - hence why people still mock him for it to this day.

Rooney's not the only one guilty of using the local journos though, I remember Danny Welbeck used them a couple of times.

Tbh, I've been giving Rooney a lot of stick over the last few years. Some of it might have been OTT, I'll admit. But it's never been because of the contract disputes. Sure, it downgraded him from "untouchable" status to "just another mercenary" among United fans but I really don't think he was the driving force behind it. I actually genuinely don't believe he has it in him to use dirty tactics like that, he seems like a guy who just want to play football and let others take care of the business part. Hence why I never really thought he wanted to leave and most certainly not to City - despite the, in my eyes, briefing. He might have felt an interest in playing for Chelsea but really wanting to leave in the middle of the season? Nah. And Rooney's contract was (and still is, probably.) so groundbreaking that it must have been about money.

Probably the best move he could make. I can't imagine that he'll manage to reverse the steep decline over the last 3-4 years but would like to see him do well there.

Stop talking sense. Someone at Everton Football Club might read it and leave us stuck with Rooney.

It's depressing he's finally off as the only real connect to our shit sides of 04-06, great sides of 06-09 and the okay sides after that is now gone. Hope he has a brilliant season at Everton.

There's a guy here. I can't remember his name. Someone should check to make sure he hasn't topped himself. That guy loves Rooney.

Eh? I don't hate Rooney, and I defend United players from abuse. That's about it.

I don't see a future for him at the club, but I refuse to sink to the depths of classless Scouse-level insults.

I'm not gonna start screaming 'sell the fat RAG' just to fit in.

Are you only counting league goals?

I never said you hated him, I thought you were one of the fan boys which I thought @Adisa was maybe talking about.

That makes no sense. And the fact we arent willing to pay rooney 250k per week for his current performance level underlines that.

Do you get salary offers based on what you will perform or based on what you have performed in the past?

To be fair, there has been many posters over the past 2 years in the Rooney performance threads, taking mortal offence at any suggestion that's he's not performing well.

To those of you slagging him for using the media to get better deals, shame on you guys.
If given a choice we all would try subtle ways to get better pay from our own bosses. Its just normal in this time and age.
He wasn't just banging goals at his prime, he was the face of united, versatile all a rounder. Striker Forward winger midfielder name it, the man has done it. Broke records after records for us.
Yea, the man aged, moyesey made a mistake of giving him a bit much, but is it his fault? Thats one of the reason stars signs for us, we are loyal to the players.
Go on wayne, I will remember your fanerbache debut, particularly the part where a 16 year old kid shoved the established giggsy aside and took the freekick himself, and scored. Authority.
May your records here lasts more than some of caftards memory of you.

P/s: no more grannies though, pls.

It's not about using the media for me. It's about slagging his teammate, his manager and the club by citing we don't have enough ambition. Imagine if you're valencia and rooney says signing you is a lack of ambition.

You dont use your camaraderie in public to get a raise.

And let's not pretend that he really care about ambition or the club, all he cares about is his wallet.

Dude he is leaving finally, lets don't fecking jinx it. Say good things and hopefully the positive vibes will send him to everton. Lol may he terrorise liverpool.
Imagine they being top of the league in a deciding game and rooney scores comeback hatrick and runs to the KOP and do a "20"... Hillarious!
That'll be the day, liverpool challenging for the title, that is.

Without hindsight, he always plays awful against the scouse.

Indeed. Wasn't in Eric Cantona that said: "When the seagull follows the trawler, it's because it's forgotten about the bread it ate earlier that morning."

I think that was probably @Needham

If I'm being honest I don't particularly like all the hate Rooney is getting - I think it's unfair that this decline is deemed to be something that he himself wants- by not trying hard enough.

He was never a striker to lead the line or play as a target man, in fact I don't particularly think he was ever a prolific striker in the way that Zlatan, RVN , berbatov were put up front and expected to get goals.

He was consistently played as a forward in between the central striker and the midfield giving us an extra man in those areas whenever we needed it. To do this he consistently uses much more energy and aggression than players who would be utilised in one particular area.

He would move up and down the field and This was similar to how Tevez played for us and other clubs too - yet no one particularly complained about his lack of ability to score goals throughout all his career.

Rooney has been fantastic for us and we have completely drained a £30mil pound battery. Good luck to him in the future.

Get what you're saying mate, absolutely no 'hate' for him (I wouldn't know why anyone would). Got fond memories of him and the seasons where he was absolutely unstoppable. I think his body type also doesn't help; he's not a lithe type like your Giggs but for him to deteriorate to this level...
