What is embarrassing is that our record goalscorer and "club legend" has placed himself in a situation where he could be described as such at aged 31 , that is embarrassing .
I've been on Rooney's case for as long as anyone, but there is a difference between accepting/hoping for his departure because of what he offers now, and describing a player that gave us many moments of unbridled joy, as a piece of shit.

Relieved but quite sad. Another 00's hero gone. Carrick and maybe Valencia the only ones left

You'll live. We've all had to watch our 90s heroes slowly leaving, culminating in Fergie retiring and us suffering the ignominy of Moyes' time at the club. We've had worse.

I bear Rooney no ill-will and am only interested in the financial benefit to United if he leaves.

It seems some want him gone at any cost, which is a bit harsh. A free transfer would be fine, provided Everton take on all his wages.

Best of luck to him and now is probably the right time.

Sad to see him go but if he had gotten in shape and looked after himself, we wouldn't be having this discussion right now.

It's better for Rooney and definitely better for United. But treat him with some respect because whether you like it or not, he was one of our greatest players.

It definitely makes me a little uncomfortable seeing the pure joy people are eliciting at the prospect of him leaving. Granted he's never been a pure athlete, and he definitely worked a lot harder when he was younger to try and maintain some semblance of conditioning, so I can see why people would be rubbed the wrong way when you consider his wages. I completely get that.

But I echo your sentiment. If he does end up leaving this summer it will be sad to see him go, and barring Carrick leaving it'll be a true end of an era.

You never know. I certainly think he'll have a bounce and be better than he's looked for the past few seasons.
And he had a good rest last season so he'll be fresher than he has been for a long time too. Remember he has loads of miles on the clock, this is the one thing that might actually get him somewhere back to what he is capable of.

Tbh it was clear at that time that it was a briefing from Rooney's camp. I actually don't believe he would have gone to City, but at the same time he did use that card during contract negotiations. It was dirty tactics but it worked out well for him.

It really wasn't clear at all mate, now i'm not saying Rooney's agent is above using tactics like that i wouldn't put it past him or any agent. But after Ferguson dropped the news out of nowhere that Rooney wanted to leave Englands biggest club the tabloids needed stories to run and the most obvious one at that time to get clicks and papers sold was Rooney to Man City given their new found wealth.

Heres what keeps getting overlooked about that whole saga, his agent wouldn't have been planting stories linking him to other clubs to get a better contract offer because he wasn't angling for a raise. As confirmed in Fergusons book he really did just want to leave. He had been refusing to sign the contract he eventually did sign for close to 3 months, and had been keeping quiet about it. Had he just wanted a raise i imagine his agent probably would have been planting stories for months. Ferguson specifically says in his book that he didn't think it was about money with Rooney but it's sad that it will be spun that way and people will believe it.

Why did he want to leave, and what changed? Genuine question as can't be bothered to do the research!

The biggest issue that people have with him is being one of the highest paid players in the squad. Reduce his salary to equal Ashley Youngs and majority would not mind him being a bit part squad player and playing poorly as it would be reasonably justified.

Even though he should have retired, thank God he's still desperate to play for England which is the main motivation I feel for him moving to Everton aswell as moving 'home'

All in all, he has obviously been a great signing, slightly tainting his stay with holding Utd ransom twice and the last couple of seasons bit glad he's going now.

Well from his statement and fergusons account it seems he didn't think United could compete with other clubs for the biggest signings and in turn the Champions League. He was wrong to say that publicly, and it's one of the few things United fans could quite rightly hold against him.

Exactly why he ended up staying i don't know, i think he did say the public reaction to him wanting to leave surprised him or something similar maybe that played a part maybe Fergie eventually talked him round. Who knows, probably won't know for sure until Rooney releases his autobiography.

I think he will stay for this season at least.

If rumours are true and we only sign 1 striker, in Morata then it wouldn't be as bad as some are making out.

While Rooney's form hasn't been great over the last season or so, with his limited game time last season he knows he is not a regular starter and his experience can help the youngsters in Rashford and Martial.

If Morata is injured, then we need options and with no other signings in the front line, a back up of rashford, martial then rooney isn't too bad.

Some comments here regarding Rooney are far too harsh
How exactly will his experience help Rashford and Martial? How is he going to transmit it to them? It's mostly non-verbal knowledge that can't easily be put into words (and I expect Rooney will have more trouble with this than most) and his legs have gone so they won't exactly see a great striker on the training pitch either.

Even then we won't really know - we'll just know what he has decided he wants us to believe.

It's hard for anyone to know exactly what his reasons were for staying, but it's strange that he was so set on leaving because he thought we couldn't compete with other clubs, but then decided to stay when we offered him a fat new contract.

Still can't believe Rooney still hated by some, as he "threatened" to leave the club, to get better wages!

I've said it before, people hail Ronaldo a legend, still chant his name & he accused of us holding him against his will etc. Uses us everytime he wants an improved contract or to pay his taxes! Just no logic.

Anyway, Rooney's time has come, like every player. But he will go down as an all time great at the club.

He's one of my favorite players. I still remember that bicycle kick goal against Man City. The next morning I tried to recreate it and ended up knocking the wind out of myself.

If he goes on loan, he can't play against us can he? Especially if we're paying half those fecking wages.

Yeah thats probably true.

But to be fair he'd been refusing to sign a new contract for months before he did. If the whole thing was a scheme to get a raise then i suspect there would have been stories about him being unhappy and being open to moving to certain clubs for months. But there wasn't, no one had a clue he wanted to leave until Ferguson made it public knowledge.

Ferguson doesn't go into specifics in his book, but when he says he doesn't think it was about money i tend to believe him. It's quite likely that the contract he signed was very similar to the one he had been turning down. It's not likely that United suddenly decided to offer him an extra £50k a week to convince him to stay when his reasons for being unhappy were not financial in the first place.

Ronaldo didn't hold the club to ransom, he just wanted a move to his dream club in 2008 and sulked when he didn't get it.
What Rooney did is far less forgivable. He used any excuse necessary simply to get extortionate wages. Not everyone will agree that he's a true legend because of that.

No he can't. A loan might be the best short term solution as it seems like he isnt getting alot of offers from abroad?

Lets not forget he has 2 more fecking years on his contract. So we'd still see him back here next summer unless we can sell him now.

He sulked and even went as far as Blatter commenting on the situation and saying were treating him like a slave...or something to that extent. Rooney could have left at any stage when he was on top, he never did. He stayed with us. He's justified his time at the club with all the goals and trophies he won for us. RVN is still loved at the club, in the end he wanted to leave and he left. Rooney? Never wanted to leave but just wanted be paid what he was worth but still gets hated for.

I'd happily waive that rule in this case. In fact, I'd even throw in a few quid to ensure he played.
Rubbish as he's become, everyone gets better when they play us after leaving.

I can only recall Welbeck scoring twice since he left, both against us. Jonathan Spector even turned into Maldini against us.

Rooney only needs to be standing in the right place, have the ball rebound off his gut and fly in

If I'm being honest I don't particularly like all the hate Rooney is getting - I think it's unfair that this decline is deemed to be something that he himself wants- by not trying hard enough.

He was never a striker to lead the line or play as a target man, in fact I don't particularly think he was ever a prolific striker in the way that Zlatan, RVN , berbatov were put up front and expected to get goals.

He was consistently played as a forward in between the central striker and the midfield giving us an extra man in those areas whenever we needed it. To do this he consistently uses much more energy and aggression than players who would be utilised in one particular area.

He would move up and down the field and This was similar to how Tevez played for us and other clubs too - yet no one particularly complained about his lack of ability to score goals throughout all his career.

Rooney has been fantastic for us and we have completely drained a £30mil pound battery. Good luck to him in the future.

That's how he was used when partnered with Ruud, Saha and Hernandez. But there's been seasons where he played really well in different roles as well. His most prolific season was the one post-Ronaldo. We most played a 4-5-1, and his head and Valencia's right foot seemed to have a superhuman connection. Sadly, it all ended with that injury with Bayern and his form tailed off for a good 6 months after that.

Did Rooney?

While I agree with the majority that Rooney has most likely come to the end of his usefulness at utd, (unless he somehow gets in a very good physical shape and starts to show on the pitch he is quality), I'm not following why he is going on a FREE?

Can someone shed some light?

Expecting a lot of silly replies, like "we need to pay everton to take him" etc so a bit of sense would be appreciated

Without knowing the specifics it's hard to give details but this sounds like we may have entered into a "Compromise agreement" to get this solved....

we could have agreed to waive our right for a transfer fee for the remainder of his contract...so long as he agrees to move....
he agrees to waive part of what he could claim for cancelling his contract early....
Everton agree to take on his registration and pay him at a particular rate...

Any shortfalls / loyalty bonuses etc can be agreed as a one-off tax free payment as part of an agreed written agreement, usually with a non-disclosure clause. The tax free nature of a compromise agreement can make it really worthwhile for the individual!

It's usually in everyone's interest to keep the details out of the press, so expect a bland statement about both clubs "making it happen" "great servant of both clubs" etc

As per David McDonnell of Mirror, Rooney to Everton would be a loan deal and we would be paying half the wages.

Now, if he ends up staying, he will have much less room for maneuver.

Considering it most likely will be a free transfer I hope to feck we're not subsidising his wages as well.

I want to get rid, but paying Everton to take him off our hands might be taking it a bit far.

I'll be glad to get rid of him but that's still a terrible deal for us, and yet another example of how badly managed we've been.

No loan deal please, i'd rather we just make him ride the bench another season if he's intent on collecting his wages from us.

Not ideal, but still better than having him around here.
Is it? We'll be paying him £125k+ a week and he wouldn't even be playing for us, but rather an arguable rival team. I'd rather tell him to leave on a permanent deal or he can stay here and get very little game time.
