I am not Rooney fans, but credit where it due, great assist.
I think the willingness to do something drive him a lot, and may be that why JM didn't sub him today.

One point I would say, lots of players would had left that ball to goal kick rather then try to win it back like he did today for assist.

Usually defend Rooney because let's face it, some of the haters in here suffer from such a bad case of confirmation bias that it's hillarious. ....
I agree with your comment. I am not asking for total unthinking devotion, just asking for the old anti Wayne chorus to take a break. Wayne is a great leader of the team, an excellent captain. He actually played quite well too in the first half (despite all the little birds who parrot opinions about his touch etc etc). Players are not machines. They are human. This was a real football match, in a real ground in a real deluge of rain. Very difficult conditions in which to play good football, and keep your concentration. Hull played with guts, determination and discipline. In the real world, football is messy, unpredictable. Pogba took four or five shots that were off target. But Pogba did his best. So did WR. He drove on, kept trying, kept his focus and composure. He (like most of the team) did great and deserves praise.

Rubbish first half, good second half, brilliant game-winning assist. Well done Wayne.

And yet in the first half he still created our two best chances. I'm far from his biggest fan but fair play he's still managing to contribute even when playing poorly

Why does everyone assume it's outright hate for Rooney? It isn't. Most fans, like me, simply don't believe in playing a player for 90 minutes in the hope that he might produce one piece of skill from time to time.

Further to that, we have players better than him in any position he can play - which ultimately means we're sacrificing to have him start.

Who knows how much better we might play when Rooney's touch isn't slowing us down.

Was great how Rooney set up that goal. :) Pretty bad performance but contributed when it mattered the most.

Agreed. I don't hate Rooney, I respect him a lot for what he's done over the years.

I just think he's shit. Thankfully though he still has a few odd moments of magic in the old dog. I do wonder if bringing him into the game at 70 minutes would be better though. He struggles with the pace of games when everybody is fresh, think that's why once others tire out he seems to "get better" or grow into it.

Not a great game, but can't fault the assist.

His stats are pretty good, too. One goal, three assists in four matches.

It was a brilliant piece of play.....got past his man...

Get to the byline Wayne, I promise ye good things will happen.

Yeah its a tricky one with Martial, whether to let him play through it or give him a rest.
I think he should get a rest, mainly because Mkhitaryan and Rashford both deserve a starting place after their respective performances. So I'd drop Mata as well. The great thing is that Jose says he's not letting anyone leave -- so we actually have a very deep squad. Martial will play his way back in, but the competition for places is great and only bodes well.

He had another bad game besides that assist at the end. That'll keep him in the Starting 11 for another 2 months.

Typical Rooney  And its not even a surprise any more. Hes shit for the majority of the game, but then has one piece of brilliance that helps to win us the game. (and then gets subbed with a minute to go lol)
Almost like the whole broken clock is right twice a day thing.

It really was a fantastic assist given the timing of it and significance, but I still expect more from him. I do worry that against fitter / better teams it wont happen and we will rue it come the end of the season.

But thats the problem Jose has to solve. for now im happy with the win :)

Embarrassing and shambolic performance from 0 to 90min and goes and gives an assist. We will do better without him!

I was criticising him most of the game and still expect more from him overall but he won us the game today. Great Assist. People can say all they want about Meyler messing up but they had a brick wall up against any attack we through at them and ultimately Rooney and Rashford were the ones to break it. Moments like that are why he is still playing but the feeling most of his 'critics' have is we would perhaps play more cohesively in the final third, resulting in more chances on goal and thus not have to rely so much on moments of magic as was the case today. I am one of the critics and believe that to be true, but can also somewhat understand why he is playing; for now at least.

He's slowly improving. Emphasis on slowly. He was a little bit better against Southampton and again today. If this continues, especially at a faster rate then I'll be the first to hold my hands up and admit I was wrong. He's always going to pull a goal or assist out of somewhere and there's not much we can do if he keeps this going. I'll trust Mourinho.

At the minute rooney is guaranteeing goals, which isn't bad at all, certainly contributing more than martial at the moment.
There was a point in the first half where he lost the ball in the final 3rd of our half 3 times in a row....that was a definate low point

I want to see the fat bastard dropped, but there's no denying he's contributed to most of our goals this season. His assist today was 2006 esque, I half expected Ronnie or Tevez to pop up and finish that. Whether we wouldn't have been goalless if Mikhi or Rashers start ahead of him is a story for another day, i'm just gonna enjoy this win for now. Jose must be having a headache with who to bench

Looked a lot better on the left

That's a good point actually, less pressure on the ball and more space, his crosses are still good, and having players like Ibra and Pogba means most of the opposition will concentrate on the centre. Asa stopgap, noting Martial's shit form and Rooney's undroppable status, starting him on the left, and Rashford/Mkhi in the centre might be a pretty good front 4.

You have to give him credit for the fact that no matter how bad he plays he doesn't let his head drop and can still pull something out of no where.

Fair play to him for another important contribution. I noticed this last season at times, but I think the thing with Rooney is that a lot of his footballing ability, as in his striking, passing, crossing etc hasn't declined dramatically, and is still alright when he's given plenty of time and space on the ball.

The problem is that his physical ability has declined to very poor levels, which means he's not able to think quickly when he gets the ball, that he's unable to take on a man successfully, and that he's just generally not very fast or capable of playing in tight spaces, which is kind of concerning when you're playing at the highest level in a league which can often be fast paced.

Given time and space he'll still have the occasional good moment, but the problem is he's not going to have enough to justify having him in the side when we consider the detriments to his game.

Might be a problem in a more even game though as he won't create anything from the left himself. The situation in today's game lent well to him going wide. He could link up well with Shaw potentially though.

It's a lesser of 2 evils argument that I'm making here, basically. If we're stuck with him at least we can make sure he's peripheral, and some of his strengths are used.

Good performance - thanks for the 3 points.
Credit to Wayne for that bit of play right in the end. However, I don't know how can anyone with a straight face claim that was a good performance, I thought he was at his absolute worst, first half in particular.

History won't remember anything other than the assist. He manufactured 3 points for us. Everything else is irrelevant.

His ability to contribute even when playing poorly, it's really quite remarkable.

I don't think he's played at all well this season, and yet he's scored one and set up two.
He is a human slot machine. If you give him enough time he will eventually pay off. That is the only explanation I can come up with for it.
Tbf, it was a bit like being kicked in the balls for 90-odd minutes, then being handed a tenner & asked to forget the pain.

Sub-standard game (again). Great bit of quality at the end though, so thank you for that.

Contributing more than martial and Mata right now. I'm very happy with him so far this season

Reading this thread it looks like people hate Rooney more than they love Manchester United. Pathetic.

He was the only player who hadn't given up in that incessant rain and after 92 mins of trying to puncture a wall. Full credit to him for going on and creating that goal. Eat your words if we end up winning the league by a couple of points.

This. I think this is what Van Gaal was trying to do by playing him deep in midfield but I think even that role is too central to our play but if we play him on the wing where we can utilize his crossing and allow him to drift into goal scoring positions we'd have the best of both worlds. He will have enough time outwide to do his thing and the team will have a more dangerous player in the hole.
