As a general rule it's rather pointless reading anything into what footballers say, yet that comment from Rooney just now about not needing to prove himself to anybody is a big part of the problem. He's a defiant little bugger that's gotten far too big for his boots. That move he does where opens his body, knocks it wide and then does a little token run upfield is all he's good for these days. Zero penetration, zero threat, zero ideas.

The "Ive nothing to prove" is everything that is wrong with him.

Nonsense.

The man has as good a record as exists in English football, he has nothing to prove. That kind of confidence and belief is what has made him one of the best ever English/United players.

If he plays shite, Mourinho will drop him... But that has nothing to do with his own belief and self confidence, that's just childish 'fans' seeking another reason to have a jibe where it doesn't actually exist.

Good goal, better second half but should have had 3 today and unacceptable first half.
better second half? well actually you're right his legs were gone after 10minutes to the second half and he was silently dominating and didnt make any mistake.. I can't wait to see 7/10 8/10 marks for him all over the football websites and magazines for his performance today..

You're wasting your time bud, he scored therefore his fanboys will see a motm performance.

Yeah that's a straw man. A fairly pathetic one at that.

I said that Ibra'a goal masked a poor performance vs Leicester. The same is true of Rooney today. He was crap. His striker partner was far better. Hopefully Mourinho drops him for our next game. We've got enough strength in depth we can do that now. Which is great.

Better than the first half IMO, which is far from saying he was remotely good.

I think José rightly feels that it's going to be a long season (hopefully!), so we shouldn't really go overboard about Wayne's continuing inclusion in the team. Hopefully, everyone will have a part to play in multiple trophy campaigns this season.

He was disastrous today. The sooner the better Mourinho makes him a squad player the better. I honestly think he'd struggle in the championship. He's almost reaching Falcao levels of decline.

I see what are you saying and I do agree. But if that is the approach we should be taking, Ibrahimovic or even Martial won't be starting today. Next match, it would be both Rooney and Martial whobare not going to be starting then.

53 passes (including 26 forward passes) with 90% accuracy. And a goal.

Not to mention being dispossessed and losing the ball more times than any other player on the pitch, awful touch and control, slowing down all counter-attacking move and opting for the safe backwards pass when more attacking forward passes are on and the most importantly not creating a single goal scoring opportunity for the team. Yes fantastic he was.

His haters are pathetic to be honest. Laughing at every little thing he did this game. Why can't you just accept that he was average tonight and move on? Does it have to be that he was complete dog shite?

Rooney's stats only look good because he's so safe. They don't show how slow and plodding he is.

Rooney is seriously underrated and under appreciated on this forum. He is a lot better than most give him credit for and people scrutinize every single thing he does.

His haters are pathetic to be honest...
...and some - though not all - of his defenders are often smug, complacent and mistake their opinions for facts; so it balances out.

I wasn't referring to you Pogue, I've not seen enough of your posts on the subject to assume you're a fanboy but for some he can't do any wrong and some I guess he can't do any good, to me he's like an anchor dragging the whole team down and we'd be better off without him, better players have been let go for the better of the team.

Yes, we have the nucleus to put together a top team unfortunately hes stinking up the place. Can you imagine Rooney in between Zlatan and Pogba on the pitch? WTF

No thats nonsense.

Players always have something to prove. Doesn't matter how much they've done or how much good will they've built up over the years everytime you step on the pitch you have something to prove.

Thats not even a football thing, but sport in general. Do you see Michael Phelps turn up at the Olympics and go 'I've got nothing to prove I won eight golds in Beijing'? Do you feck.

If Rooney genuinely feels like he has nothing to prove then I would suspect its a complacency that explains his utterly appalling form for the past two years.

Nothing to prove indeed.

In what sense are the people discussing him here haters? We're just rightfully commenting on the fact that he produced another incredibly poor performance. What else are we going to discuss in a player performance thread that's sole purpose is to discuss the performances of Wayne Rooney?

Utter bullshit, as a Utd player you have something to prove EVERY SINGLE GAME. namely that you deserve to start the next one, because at a club like ours there is always someone breathing down your neck for your place. If he really thinks he has nothing to prove then he is a complacent arrogant little bitch who needs to buck his ideas up.

It's the classic tactic of polarizing both sides of an argument so that everyone's put in one extreme or the other. It's the primary reason why all talk about Rooney eventually breaks down into some form of haters vs. *** reds.

Agree. Ruining the forum for me to be honest. Every other thread contains a post calling him fat, cnut or useless. Or all three...

Go support Liverpool and use RAWK if you want some kind of cult forum where you can't criticise a player without getting banned.

If it annoys you, then make your argument to the contrary. If it makes sense people will back you. At the moment the Rooney backers have very little to draw on so its no surprise they've just spat the dummy out.

It's notable that the typical defences of Rooney have now evolved to the point where they don't actually involve the defence of Rooney himself - it generally involve those reluctant to criticise him saying that his haters are going over the top, because it's easier to say that than praise Rooney at this point, and his defenders will also drag other player who they believe have performed poorly under the bus...as if this somehow justifies Rooney being terrible.

I'm not sure if his."nothing to prove" comment was smugness or insecurity. Either way, this guy needs to feck off to China.

he was complete dog shite... It's just disgrace to see how unfit he's for a professional sportsman earning 300k/week, let alone his shocking ability..

he's just disgrace to the club

It wasn't incredibly poor in my opinion. He was average. People seem to drown in confirmation bias when Rooney is involved it seems to me.

What exactly about his performance was so incredibly poor?

So I'm a Rooney backer and a Liverpool fan because it annoys me that "all the Rooney haters" need to constantly call him a fat useless cnut? You can really see that the "Rooney haters" are the most intelligent of the Utd fans and obviously the top reds.

I myself would be inclined to start Mata over Rooney but he wasn't as bad as people on here are talking about. Like someone else mentioned, it has become a very annoying aspect of this forum. He was pretty average but "incredibly poor" is such a silly exaggeration.

Everything he did apart from the goal!

He consistently lost the ball which led to the breaking down of attacking moves. He just generally looks unfit and his incredibly slow and lethargic play was hampering us on a regular basis. Not to mention the fact that despite presumably being deployed in a sort of attacking mid/in behind the striker type role, he provided feck all in the way of service for Ibrahimovic who was forced to work for his own goal.

He occasionally looked alright when granted time and space, but even then he tended to knock it out to a wide option instead of looking for the man in the best position. Not the worst performance he's produced, but I'd comfortably say it was a poor one. I think we've just become so used to Rooney being a bit shit these days that performances like today's have kind of become his average. Which isn't good enough.
