I don't think he made the difference at all, waste of subs he was average and ineffective the whole game apart from that one cross and this coming from me who thought he might have changed after the performance that he showed when he had his beard. He should have put more effort if he wants to break the record.

But he's trusted to come on when we're one nil down in a big game.

He's on the bench for a reason isn't he? Might as well throw him in there and try something different, he is an experienced player after all. He's a glorified squad player now but I really hope this is his final season. He's on his last legs like Gerrard was before he left Liverpool

I'm still wondering what Mourinho was thinking. In what way would he make a contribution? He's not fast. His first touch have never been good and lately it's been really shitty. He's not creative. When under pressure he seems to lose the ball a lot.

Liverpool had an inexperienced defender which could've been tested a lot more by a much quicker and more technical player such as Martial.

As someone mentioned earlier... can't remember a player of such high quality as Rooney to regress so quickly and at such young age. Had he been 35 he would've been excused.

If he's going to play any more this season it should be as a sub when we're 3-0 up

Guess you missed our goal then.

It should have been Mata on, then Rashford when Mata came on for Martial.

He is just too slow and ponderous which makes any counters break down, then once the rivals have regrouped his first touch lets him down.

Wrong player for this game. There's always an expectation that experience might help, but never when facing a team so focused on pressing. He has never been all that against Liverpool, not even in his prime.

All these negative comments can be said to any of our players yesterday. Apart from Valencia, Rojo (in the first 75 mins) and Mikhi (not that much) all other players were not up to occasion. That being said, I do agree with Pogue that it is weird Rooney didn't put much effort in rushing the play, especially when Mignolet got hold of the ball. But, maybe the reason for that is because the at the left side of our team at that moment we didn't have proper wingback so the instruction was to make sure that side is covered well, nonetheless i would hope he had shown more grit and passion.

As for the substitution, I do agree that Mata should be the 1st option, but even then it's not like Mata do anything notable yesterday when he came in later. For those who think Rashford should come in instead, I would say he didn't because of the same reason why Martial was subbed off. Liverpool is leading, and had more people defensively made it hard for Martial to be effective. The same can be assumed happened if Rashford came in.

He was doing his best but this is what its come down to with him. He can't cut it anymore and its a bit sad
Not true. And his corners went to the first man just like Miki's which is obviously Jose's tactics.

I don't know what to say to you sir. Really. Our eyes see things differently. Rooney's first touch has been for the most part terrible for a while now, and his shooting has got progressively worse with each season since the first time he seriously injured his toe. The foot injuries over the seasons have surely taken their toll on him and its a well known fact if you been paying attention

He needs this record ASAP now. So that we stop making him the first choice to bring on. Mata for carrick should have been the sub.

I think the ideas are in his mind, but his body is just not responding to what he wants to do.

The bigger picture is Rooney is completely past it and probably could barely make it in the MLS at this stage.
Don't kid yourself.

He's past his prime, yes, but I don't think he deserves any singled out discredit today when the team played at about the same level.

No I didn't... I also saw all his mistakes along with that "I won't bother to run at Mignolet and force him to pick it up, I'll just stroll slowly back home"

Okay. How come you didn't decide to post in Pogba's performance thread about his mistakes today or in Mata's thread about his ineffectiveness?

I've written about Pogba being totally worthless yesterday. The difference is that he was worthless yesterday, but have been really good in most of our other games. Rooney have been "mehh" at best this season...

I didn't think he was that bad.

But I blame my dodgy stream for that.
Yeah, I honestly wasn't expecting this much shade. He came on, tried to make things happen. Some worked, some didn't, had a good hand in securing the loose ball and putting it in onto the head of Fellaini for the play that eventually dropped for Zlatan. Not really that arsed, especially when some of the other more influential players were very poor. Liverpool really are a horrible team to play against so I am not really surprised nobody had fun with the ball at their feet.

You'd struggle to find a bigger Rooney supporter than me over the years on the forum. But Wayne is struggling nowadays and can't cope at this level it's painful to watch. He wasn't bad yesterday but well short and I think he knows it. My money is on him retiring at the end of the season ala a Cantona!

That's a bit of a silly statement considering there's two posters who would rub broken glass in their own eyes if they thought it would convince us that the mighty Wayne Rooney could still play football.

By Rooney's new standards, he was alright... only in that he added a bit of fight and impotus to our play. We were way too wet in the first half, and seemed to get overpowered on a number of occassions.

Who did martial set up? I saw mhiki miss after Herrera through ball and pogba miss after mhiki through ball?
Rooney set noone up either. Martial was involved in crucial play that allowed the cchances to happen. Like Rooney. Without the rubbish passing and consistent loss of possession.

Some of the comments in here are preposterous. Rooney has been a brilliant player for us, and the level of contempt he gets in here is embarrassing. That a player whose only crime is to be past is peak, is suddenly treated with such glowing vitriol, is a sad reflection of the state of some of our fans. He made a couple of poor passes when he came on today, and it's all people want to talk about. But no one is talking about the one decisive moment he orchestrated that got us back into the game. People see only what they want to see. I remember other great players going through the same late career scorn from fans, particularly Giggs in his early 30's, Keane in his last couple of years, and Rio before having a title winning renaissance.

Rooney's nowhere near the goal threat or creative force he once was. But every time he's played this season, I've watched him run his tits off, and try to positively contribute in every phase of play. Even when it doesn't come off, it's something I appreciate. He's also had some really good performances as a defensive winger from the left, which have gone unheralded. Even when he does play well, some people still can't resist getting a dig in e.g. "Rooney not as shit as usual, surprisingly".

A player who has been with us for 12.5 years, won it all, is our all time record goalscorer, might - just might - deserve our respect a little more than he gets. It's fecking laughable that a player like Schweinsteiger can get such a cheer from the fans, when he's been invisible for the last 18 months - fecking off to Germany with his bird for half of it - while collecting 200K a week. Yet Rooney gets nothing but shit for his salary, despite always having an exemplary attitude, and always trying his hardest. He didn't make them give him a contract, and he doesn't pick the team or make the subs.

Yes, he's nowhere near the player he used to be. Accept that, and move on. Accept that he is a great club servant, and an influential leader of our playing staff. And that despite his waning powers, he still has plenty to contribute as a squad player. Not least his versatility and work rate. To me it seems the hate all stems from the transfer request debacle of a few years ago. Without ever fully knowing what was going on behind the scenes. The fact is, he stayed and never ever looked like he wanted to be anywhere else.

I'm ashamed to say I was on the bandwagon at one point. Talking shit about him endlessly. But, thankfully, it's not too late to say enough is enough. Stop the bandwagon, because I want to get off.

.... Rooney set-up Fellaini's header which led to our goal?

Rooney set up fellaini to score from 6 yards out and also put in to good balls across the box.
Not saying I agreed with martial going off at the time but it worked so I fail to see where the criticism is coming from

He was fecking dreadful and should have been sent off.

That's where the criticism is coming from.

I agree with your post, just brace yourself so the contract moaners to come after you tho. This thread just goes full circle after every game regardless of the impact he's had

He also forced a good save out of Mignolet (before anyone realised he was offside) I thought Rooney was fairly poor, with some terrible moments, but he was far more influential on the game than the player he replaced. Martial showed some silky skills in the opening minutes but created bugger all and was completely anonymous by the time he was subbed off.

Yeah. The stamp on Milner.

Nah, not for me. The problem is, Milner planted his foot quite a distance behind/away from the ball, so unless Rooney knew for a fact that Milner was going to do that (and I can't see that he would, considering as I say - Milner put his foot quite a way past the ball) then it could be seen as accidental.

Also, it wasn't high, it was around the ankle, which again, only happened because of how Milner planted his leg... he could just have easily stamped on his foot then on his ankle.

Never anything worse than a yellow. Mikhi did something almost identical (to the same player?) with none of this bizarre crap where fans clamour to say their own player should have been sent off.

It's because it's Rooney. No one would be calling for a Red if it was, say, Carrick or Mikhii

That is a blatant red card. He's gone in studs up and totally missed the ball.

I'd be wanting a red card if it was Milner on Rooney that's for sure. Some people will just blindly defend Rooney on here at all costs, even if he's terrible for 99% of a game they'll focus on the 1%.

It's not blatant though is it?

Rooney's going to put his toe on the ball, and Milner basically puts his leg under where Rooney's will land.

It's not high, it's not a stamp, and it happens so quickly, you can't really accuse Rooney of going to do him.

I don't think Rooney is trying to do him, I'm sure it wasn't intentional. He's misjudged his tackle and ended up stamping on him though.

Needs to get this goal so we can move him on. His first touch and lack of effort is an embarrassment. How Rooney got the nod over Rashford yesterday blows the mind.

He was shite yesterday. Probably Jose is the only one who still believes in him. Needs to get his goal and warm the bench for the remainder of the season.

He did some good work for the goal, but other than that he was pretty shit as per usual. And no, he shouldn't have been sent off - a yellow is fine.

It's a shame, mentally he's still got it and when he's static he can pick out a pass but anything that involves running, turning or generally moving he really struggles.

That point where he was 1 on 1 with Lovren and got nowhere near going passed him, sums him up for me now really.

Mourinho made a big mistake bringing him on instead of Rashford. The game was end to end and crying out for some pace, instead he subbed on our 3 slowest players.

Yes OK Rooney and Fellaini were involved with the goal, but maybe we could have scored 2/3 with Martial and Rashford still no together.
