Only Rooney being dropped from England would make it to the main headline on the homepage of the BBC. Any other player is dropped and no one gives a shit. This is and has been the biggest issue all along; he's not treated like any other player. He's been given a free ride for years because of who he is, and not what he brings to the team. It has to stop. The whole situation is mental. I can't wait until he's gone so we can return to being Manchester United, instead of Wayne Rooney FC.

He's the captain. Of course this is big news. Would be the same for any other country.

His demise has been incredibly quick. Fair play to Jose for making a big call. There's no way Southgate would have had the stones to do this without that precedent.

Tough times for Rooney but he just hasn't been good enough. So what's happening is fair. I thought he said all the right things at the presser tonight.

I can understand mocking him on a forum. But tweeting abuse to him and his wife is not on.

Mob will be a mob, can't change 'em. Famous people should get off social media if they can't handle the mob, but they don't because they feed of the attention and PR. If you want to play the game...

This is bullshit.

This is bullshit.
No one deserves it, but it's blatantly obvious that it happens. Most players get a shit ton of abuse on social media. I for one don't understand why they would put themselves through that, if they can't undergo the mob mentality that exists.

He did indeed and it went beyond the usual choice of 5 lines "team is what's important" "work hard" etc etc. I think the penny might have finally dropped that he doesn't have a club manager backing him, a national team manager, the general media and the majority of fans. He's probably been quite surprised at the reaction to what he's said so far.

Time to be a little more humble, suck it up and accept his status now and hope he finds a bit of form because the media will then love the "Rooney is back" narrative.

Convinced he's done at this club.
It just needed one manager to summon the courage to drop him. Now Jose has, it's not really that big of a decision for Southgate.
I can't see a way back for him for both club and country. He's not physically capable.
I said it a month or so ago when he appeared undroppable that faced with either survival or taking down Rooney, Jose will always look out for number one. I almost feel sorry for him but then I remember that he chose this in 2010...

Never really understood why people capitalise random letters in the middle of sentences? Why do They Do That?

If he breaks the record, I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave in January.

This is true.
It is a surprise that Southgate had the balls to drop him.
I think he wanted to drop him in the previous game, but did not want to rock the boat. However, when the fans booed Rooney, Southgate got all the encouragement he needed.

...and to think only 2 games ago, Allardyce gave Rooney carte blanche to play anywhere he wanted and any way, he wanted.
Rooney must be in absolute shock! I know I am.

Rooney being given a free ride? theres not been a step in his career he hasn't faced huge criticism.

The media itself two years ago were obsessed with saying he never reached his potential. Its mainly ex players and pundits who don't stick the boot in at all.

I really never thought he would be dropped.

I'd given up on him being dropped anytime soon within the next 2 years.

Kudos Jose.

You did what was necessary with Casillas,Terry and this .Big balls indeed.

Rooney forced his hand with Watford and Northampton performances. Leaving him in the starting XI would be a suicidal decision by Mou, though LVG would probably just move him into another position if he found himself in such situation...

Is there for hope for Rooney that he can somehow revive his career a little like John Terry ?

So the anti Rooney brigade can rejoice that their hatchet job is complete.

Congratulations to you all, it must feel great to have defiled a Manchester United legend.

I'm glad sense has prevailed. Finally.

Deserved to be dropped. Got dropped. He will get his chance to get back again for both club and country.

Yes, he deserves to be dropped, but when Ive read the language and felt the feelings so many fellow Manchester United fan on here have used towards him, it saddens me.

One can be critical whilst supporting our players at the same time. Instead, they hang him out like a smelly kipper.

And the manner it has come about? When Rooney makes his come back, and he will, none of his haters deserve any of the good feelings or success that will come with it.

The manner it has come about is a by product of how he decided to play it. Nobody to blame but himself.

Rooney may have to be more selfish over playing his role now, as he most gently put it.

He was the elephant in the room to be fair.

You think Rooney is going to make some grand return to acceptable form?

I don't know about anyone else, but after the shit he pulled in getting his contract in 2010, the Wayne Rooney I used to know and love died. I've not felt anything towards him ever since and I for one am glad that I will soon never have to see him sully our great club with his presence again.

He won't make a come back. He's done. Like a kipper, you might say...

I think this will give him a much needed jolt, he will transform the way he prepares and participates for training and it will give him the magic extra 1%.

I hope all that combines to give him a final phase in his career so he can win us a PL title as captain.

I've been adamant for at least 3 years now that Rooney has been done.

I do think he might have one purple patch left in him in terms of goals but from a perfomance pov,no.

We need to move on.Chelsea should have moved on Terry too.It cost them big time last season.
