Played well. Rusty in the first half, quality in the second half. I think he'll provide some nice linkup in that 10 role. That goal from open play he's going to get a lot because his movement into the box is still top notch. He showed that at the back end of last season as well. Put it on a plate for him and he'll bang it toward goal.

1/10 in the first half. Dreadful passes, turned off during set pieces giving 1 goal away and almost 2 if it wasn't for a good save by De Gea. 9/10 in the second half. Don't know what that half time teamtalk did, but it worked wonders.

Doesn't have the touch or execution to play at 10 and can't play as a striker anymore. Let's not start another season debating how we shape the side to make him work or where he fits. We already know the answers. We can't and he doesn't.

It is not up for debate. He is the captain and he will play, no matter what the haters say.

He played like that 09/10 season. Sublime finishing and sub-standard general all round play.

If he can score goals consistently then no one, even myself, can complain but we've been down this route so many times :(

His penalty box work is still pretty good, we know he can score those scrappy half chances. His general game was still shocking though. Improved in the second-half, no doubt, but I still don't want him to be starting for us. If he can't start the season well then he should be dropped.

I don't think him and Zlatan are going to work, not enough speed with link up play. I think Zlatan will offer us more cutting edge, I think Rooney would be better from the bench. It might good to see how he would respond, we all know that won't happen though. He will probably put in many poor performances before he gets dropped.

Rooney and Zlatan won't work for the same reasons Rooney and Van Persie didn't work. Welbeck was the last player Rooney formed a good partnership with and yesterday showed how Rashford might be a good foil too. Genuine pace makes the opposition defend deeper and gives Rooney the space he neede to be effective. I really hope Jose has thought this one through and/or has the cojones to bench big characters.

I lost track on what why we're giving him games.

Is it to wait for him to improve? Or to proove to the fans that he's finished so we can drop him?

Because at this rate we're only playing him for the sake of his defender to admit that he is indeed shit and they're a devout bunch.

Big pressure on his position than anytime in his Utd career. You don't pay 100m to play defensive midfield so I can see Pogba playing 10. Mata is a better 10 than Rooney IMO....and Jose's already said he' s not playing Rooney as a 6 or 8 so that rules out midfield

The craziest thing is that we are about to pay a world record fee for a player and then not not play him in his best position because we are still catering to this has-been.

First game of pre season, obviously going to be rusty yet scored twice and looked decent second half.

Some right odd balls on this forum with regards to Rooney.

Mourinho has dropped the Madrid God Casillas so don't think for one second he won't drop Rooney should he not be performing.

9/10, absolutely no chance , he was better in the second half but we looked better when mata came on.

There is also a cost to his presence—every bobbled first touch or misplaced pass breaks the momentum of United's play, and it happens far too often. With the exception of a spell up front in January last season and a few decent game in the vetoed midfield role, this has been the case for much of the past two seasons.

We'll most likely keep playing him until he becomes the top goalscorer in United's history. Five more goals until thats the case I think.

I think Mourinho will keep it simple. He will start in the team, he will have to justify staying in it.

I know your being sarcastic but there is no agenda in this post. That doesnt mean that a lot on this forum don't have a massive agenda against Rooney and won't look at anything in an objective manor

Rooney hasn't been "quality" since 2012. It's not a dip in form, he's been heavily declining for 4+ years.
Since 2012? Bollocks. In 2012-2013 he had 16 goals and 14 assists. And in 2013-2014 season he had 19 goals and 22 assists. Even the last 2 seasons he has scored average of 15 goals.

Pogba isn't a 10 if that's what you're implying. Mou said he'll play Rooney at 9, 9½ and 10.

He's been steadily getting worse since 2010. That was his peak.

He scores goals (or at least he can) but there's better players out there to do that job and we don't even play him in that position. No.10, midfielder and all kinds of shit which he can't do.

I can't say he's been consistantly good since the end of the 11-12 season when he was developing a nice partnership with Welbeck. In Fergie's last season he was such a detriment to our general play and his partnership with RvP was non-existent. It was no surprise he got dropped for our biggest game of the season at home to Madrid, and was seemingly put up for sale by Fergie. He had a few nice moments of course but, coming off the back of another good season from him, and buying what we thought would be brilliant partners for him in Kagawa and RvP, it was nothing but a disappointing season from him.

He was better under Moyes but it's nothing to brag about. Everyone, bar Januzaj and de Gea, that season was terrible and just because he stood out from the pile of dung that was our squad that season doesn't mean it was a successful season for him. I still have nightmares from our game away to Munich.

The last two seasons under van Gaal are the worst I've ever seen him play bar his short stint as a number 8 where he was decent and outperformed all our midfielders bar Carrick.

Are you aware you wrote this in response to a post with stats about a really impressive number of assists?

Was Casillas dropped at the beginning because he wasn't performing well or because of bad behavior and understanding with Mourinho (specially regarding his wife) ?

I think 2011 was his peak personally. From like February(after the City game)-September. He was often unplayable.

I believe it was Casillas leaking things to the Madrid press and Mourinho was unhappy.

Not because of performance levels, albeit he did start showing signs of decline.

If you click on the M.E.N. article that is linked in the Bleacher Report one and go down to the comments section there's accusations of a journalistic agenda to get him out of the team.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but why do we believe this? We don't owe him the record and surely getting played just to get the record when you weren't good enough to get it when you actually merited a place in the team only diminishes the achievement. That last sentence might have gotten away from me a bit, I think it's understandable anyway.
