I personally think that people getting into tedious/pedantic/personal arguments and de-railing threads is part of the reason the football forums are getting worse. Most can't be bothered getting involved in a football discussion if that discussion turns into a pedantic argument. Although the general's gone too far the other way with everyone being wonderfully accommodating, caring, sensitive people. We need to get back to that happy middle ground of faux-homosexuality, fellatio and arguing about Berbatov's cigar-smoking skills and Tevez>Rooney.

 I love how you saw fit to edit that bit into it.

I don't get your point?

My point was that we can play very well without Rooney, what exactly is yours? that we play well with Rooney, well I know that, obviously.

That was one of very very few games away from home where we've been very convincing. However one game is hardly enough to conclude that we could regularly play well without Rooney.

Ozil will blow his load and would look towards his bench before half time if he was asked to do half the work Rooney does for us.

There is no compassion between the two. It's insane how criminally underrated is Rooney by his own fans. Blows my freaking mind.

Sparky_Hughes hate is almost at unhealthy levels.

I agree I dont like him and never have, but I have never denied that he is a very good player and valuable for us, but that gets completely overlooked in the OMG someone said something bad about wazza frenzy should anyone fail to toe the party line. In this very threat I have often been complimentry about him when he has done well. For the last time:

Is he an exceptionally talented footballer
YES
Does he improve our team significantly when he plays well?
YES
When NOT playing well is he still useful to the team?
SOMETIMES.....other times he plays like twisted crossbreed of Emile Hesky and Jason Lee......(See world cup 2010 until the following January)
Do I think he is BPITW material?
No he doesnt have the mental strength requiered
Is he Utds Best player?
IMO NO Rvp is but that is a completely unanswerable question and noones answer can definitively be proved right or wrong.
Will I still think he is a thick chavy scumbag if he scores in every game from now until he retires?
YES but that doesnt mean I dont want him to do well
Am I happy when he scores?
Of course I am
Do I think he should be sold?
At this moment no.
Will there come a time when he should be?
More than likely yes.
Am I still pissed over the whole contract issue?
Yes and will remain so......I will NEVER and I do mean NEVER forget the look on SAFs face during that press conference. I know he can play the media like a fiddle when he wants to but hes not that good an actor, that hurt SAF and that is unforgivable.
Do I think he worth what we pay him?
Tough call but Im going with no, as anyone who can spend money on those ridiculous hair treatments obviously has far too much to begin with.

He is going to tear Madrid apart and will be the one doing the winking. Playing with so much passion and desire.

My worry is that he will do too much defensive work which will make him less of a threat like we saw in the 09 final.

Very good performance from him today. Really put in a defensive shift for the team. Looks like Rooney is really starting to hit long run of good form at the right time of the season.

Pepe was a cnut in his Porto days too then. I didn't know it was him Rooney "elbowed". What an awful awful decision that was.

I'd forgotten about that! Doesn't look like a sending off at all. Hope he has a great game tomorrow (Rooney, not Pepe), hitting good form at the right moment.

I think in the first leg Rooney is going to be a midfielder/Left back.

Fergie will not want want to go toe-to-toe with Madrid in their yard. I think the 2 beatings against Barca and the fact the second leg is at OT will make for a defensive mindset.

They're scared of Rooney. Once he starts putting himself about, they'll pull out all the dirty tricks they know to get him send off.

Wayne Rooney has scored 14 of his 27 Champions League goals in the knockout stages - a ratio of 52 per cent, which puts him ahead of his continental rivals.

By comparison, Lionel Messi is on 46 per cent and Cristiano Ronaldo is on 45 per cent.

Didier Drogba has scored 33 per cent of his Champions League goals after the group stage, while Rooney's Manchester United teammate Robin van Persie is on 24 per cent.

wow

I'm sure Messi has scored a lot more than 14 goals in the knockout stages.
% can be misleading.

He's a lot older and a lot wiser now. He'll be more than aware of what they have planned and with the Ref being who it is, someone will have had a word in his ear already.

Or Hargreaves versus Carrick?

Where is the chief these days anyways?!

Rooney is in top form at the moment, I can see him giving Alonso a lot of trouble. Van Persie is capable of leading the line on his own, which means Rooney can haunt his man at all times. I'd say he'll be our key player tomorrow. If he does his job well, we should be able to get something out of this.

ave it!

The difference is now we have someone else who can still be a massive attacking threat, even if Rooney is concentrating his efforts elsewhere on the pitch.

Rooney is going to have to help a lot in midfield tonight, RVP is going to have to be the principal attacking threat.

I'd say our wingers will have to be, cause it'll be their job to actually get the ball into the box for RvP.

A worrying thought...

RVP is much better at holding the ball up than Rooney, he uses his body so much better to shield the ball, and that will allow us time to get higher up the pitch and support him.

I think in those terms we dont have to have the wingers belting up the pitch, we can knock it into his feet and rely on him to hold off the defender long enough to make more ground back up, something we havent been able to do with Rooney as CF

Strongly disagree on the first paragraph, and even if true, he doesn't get a lot of time of the ball for us anyway, and I'd wager he'll get even less against Madrid.

Rooney with his back to goal always gets robbed of posession, he cannot seem to position himself properly. He either wins a foul of gets tackled the majority of the time.

If you concentrate on this you will notice how much better RVP is at shielding the ball with his body, especially in and around the box.

Yeah, I agree. Van Persie is actually one of the best players I've ever seen at doing this.

Bloody hell that's a stretch!

What about:

Shearer, Vieri, Batistuta, Nistelrooy, Drogba, Trezeguet and that's just recent history. All were great with their back to goal.
