Bloody hell that's a stretch!

What about:

Shearer, Vieri, Batistuta, Nistelrooy, Drogba, Trezeguet and that's just recent history. All were great with their back to goal.

Don't forget our Sparky. Hughsie was at his most dangerous when he got the ball with his back to goal.

Add Berbatov to that list, he's very good at shielding the ball. Deceptively strong.

Anyway big night for Wayne, he's gonna be sticking so tight to Alonso that Gerrard'll get jealous.

I actually expect Rooney to be more of a difference maker this game than pretty much anyone else.
Talking about influencing the general flow of the game throughout it all.
Ronaldo and/or RvP might be the biggest goal threats, but United's and Real's play will have a lot to do with how Rooney plays.
I believe his job will be to do to Alonso what he did to Arteta against Arsenal, works out too since they play in the same/similar position, and Rooney doesn't have to sacrifice his positioning in order to do his job.
Ronaldo is Ronaldo and expecting him not to have a chance is ridiculous, but I think Rafael & whoever else is going to help out a bit will manage to keep him relatively quiet as long as Rooney does his job on Alonso. You keep Alonso at bay, stop the supply, and all of a sudden those chances become more sporadic.

However Real is incredibily dangerous on the counter and I just hope Evra doesn't go too high up the pitch and leave us open at the back too often.

God I'm just so pumped up about this already, I can't begin to imagine how it'll be like once the game starts....

I think he showed that he is has just that little bit less grace/technique than the absolute best attacking players I think. Not necessarily any shame, he makes up in other areas and all that. That said - I don't think he was good tonight.

I don't think he gets enough credit, he's an excellent, excellent player but he's willing to put everything to one side for his team. First Half was good, second half he faded, probably tired mind after playing 90 mins against Brazil.

Eamon Dumphy saying he's been shit this season, and is unhappy.

He was poor , especially in the 2nd half when the rest of the team improved.

Tbf he was used as a work horse more than an attacking outlet tonight. Can't blame him.

He will always sacrifice for the team.

Bang on.

He looked dangerous when he ran at their defense and played in the ball when RVP hit the post. What he's not good at is holding the ball up when compared to Welbeck and RVP. Also assisted Welbeck's opener

I thought he was pretty poor tonight. Touch of a rapist for the majority of it.

went missing tonight. Thats OK, it happens. He will make his class felt in this tie in 2nd leg

He's always like that. But tonight I really wanted to see more of him in attacking areas. We didn't see the most positive aspects of his game when we really needed it. Too often he was deep when our other attackers were pushing up the pitch.

There's always the second leg for him to make his mark.

Good in parts but quite bad in others. Would have preferred to have been in Kagawa's role tonight but the end justifies the means. So many 'decent' away results in Europe have come with Wayne putting in a shift on the wing.

He was good in the first half and faded in the second. I'd like to see RvP or Hernandez or any top striker play at right wing at the Bernebeau and put in a great performance. He sacrificed himself for the team today and put in a shift.

I feel a bit for Rooney when these huge games come around as hes usually asked to play a little out of his best position and more for the team, he never really gets the headlines in these games.

He was played completely out of position, what the do you expect?

Does this stuff automatically negate all football discussion every time? His touch and passing were poor, which has little to do with your response. I'm sure the manager gives his players a free pass if he plays them elsewhere, I imagine he plays them there expecting them to perform.

May I just point out in any case that I feel he did a great job for the team especially covering his full-backs, and I'm not questioning why he wasn't a huge attacking threat. I'm saying much of the basics were poor like controlling and passing the fecking football. This position talk is just over-complicating the debate.

Looked nervous as feck; almost rushed everything when he had more time than expected - still looked really dangerous though, lovely disguise ball for RvP when he hit the bar.

But seriously though, "used as a workhorse". That's what we used Park and Fletcher for, no offense. Not Rooney. That killed me inside.

As much as we'd rather not seeing it done with Rooney, he's more suited to working hard than Van Persie is. Unfortunate for him not to be able to shine in such a big game but sometimes I guess these things have to be done.

He needs one of those performance-enhancing rugs.

But seriously...I expect Wayne & RVP to really rise to the occasion in the 2nd leg.

I thought he was good. He never had many options to pass the ball to in the first half. so he always tried to go for long balls. He kept possession well and his hard work was evident. He slotted in every position and covered every blade of grass. Not his best game but if Rooney's bad games correspond to this, i'll still take him ahead of most of the other strikers in the world

He played 90 mins for England, busted a gut on Sunday and he looked tired in the 2nd Half. My point with Rooney is that he completely buys into the teams needs and there aren't many players as good as he is that are willing to do what he does regularly. He's been shunted aside for RVP but it doesn't bother him, I respect that a lot especially in modern football. Look at Pogba for instance.

Can't believe anyone can say that he was poor in an attacking sense.

When did he get the ball in any good attacking positions?

He was out there to track runners and play responsibly. Oh and he put the ball right on Welbeck's head for an assist.

Let's see what Rooney can do when he actually plays as a forward in the next leg.

jesus people.
