Thought he was largely shite. He left Rafael exposed too often. However, he was out of position and his effort is admirable.

He was pushed back by Coentrao while Welbeck was relatively free on the other side because Ramos wasn't getting forward as much. That's why so much of the play went through Danny today. I was kind of surprised they weren't on opposite sides of the pitch, but you can't argue with the result.

He worked hard and tracked as best as possible, but he was pretty dogshit everywhere else. His passing was all over the place and his general ball control seriously lacked.

I personally don't think he should ever be used as a wing tracker ever again, he hasn't got his legs anymore for that job, and when he did have the ball he was too tired and lost his ability.

Was a great corner though I will give him that.

Personally think Valencia should of been trusted to track coentrao

Did much better in the second half. Okay overall. Not much attacking output but did very good defensively on Alonso and others.

I thought Rooney was meant to be a "complete" player? And yet the same people labelling him as such then make the excuse that he performs poorly because he's played out of position...

As has been pointed out, positional sacrifice might affect a player's influence and potency, but I fail to see how it can transform your touch and send most of your passes awry.

Tbf, he sacrificed himself tonight. Very hard to shine when you do what he did. Ok, his touch and passing was poor, but his work rate was top notch and important

Yes correct. Ronaldo was our best player then.

Rooney is our best attacking player now. He's better than Kagawa for starters.

:lol::lol::lol: the shite clinging to rvp's arsehairs have more ability than rooney.

now that we have a genuine top player in attack again (rvp) like we did when we had ronaldo, rooney is best served being out wide as the donkey.

no shame in it btw, sammy eto'o (a better forward/striker than rooney) did it for inter when they won the treble.

I think Persie is better, but this is a bit extreme to say the least.

With a Kagawa in the side? I think we would have been served better if Rooney played behind RVP, and Valencia was made the workhorse.

Didn't have the best game, sloppy at times, didn't stop working - ok overall.

what a lot of rubbish rooney wasn't great tonight as he played right wing but he's a world class performer

He was the biggest dissapointment for me today. Worked his bollocks off yes, but was really poor in possession imo

This was my worry - that he would do too much defending. Should've played central and Kagawa left imo.

Will need him and RVP to step up in the next leg. Bit telling that Fergie moved Welbeck to the centre rather than Wayne.

When he's put under pressure from the opposition he usually struggles, especially with his touch and ability to get free from people. He didn't have a second on the ball to do anything of note.

He put a lot of effort in, so I take my hair off to him.

I thought he was rubbish, didn't look fit to me. He ran a lot, but he didn't close players down at speed, and when he did close them down they were walking past him with ease.

It's weird the way his touch goes so bad when he's not in form.

A world class player shouldn't need so much time and space to make a creative contribution.

He was arguably at fault for the goal so I wouldn't say he put in a great defensive performance either. Like I said he will have to step it up for the next leg but I'm not too fussed that he had a bad game, players do. I agree with Plech that he looked a bit spent, maybe the Everton match took a bit more out of him than expected.

Tend to agree with this. So many of his mistakes were really careless. Expected a lot better than that display.

Have you forgotten this season where Rooney has dragged us through matches at the Etihad?

Stop bashing him, hel come good in the second leg. Get him in the mixer he'll create some magic.

First of all, he did nothing in attack, but I don't blame him for that, he was played out of position. Still, he could do more, but okay, as I said, I won't blame him for that.
However, I can't understand how one day he tackles Phil Neville like he is his worst enemy, but three days later doesn't show any will to even track back fecking cnut Fabio Coentrao for that chance when de Gea made save with his legs.

If Nani played like this defensively, people would say he is most unreliable player in our team.

Poor performance by him tonight, ignoring swansea away, his worst game of the season for me.

Ramos played as CB, not fullback .

Normally when he plays shit he still looks alive and trying to do the right thing. Today I don't think he ran properly, even wondered if he was carrying an injury. A couple of times he lost the ball and only chased it back after giving it a bit of thought.

I'd rather drop him than see him play like that in the second leg. But I'm not saying he should be dropped, because he will likely improve.

How can such a quality player be so inconsistent?

Give him a break lads since Tottenham he's been working his bollocks off every 3 days or so and played well, it showed tonight.

Aye it's been 6 games in 18 days for Rooney.

Thanks.

Not his best performance but could see his desire. Detrimental player to our squad who could do with some more support than critism.

Didn't play his best so he's a fat non-league player again, yeah?

He's 'off form' too often. I watch a fair bit of La Liga, and players like Iniesta, Xavi, Messi and Ronaldo produce quality consistently. How many bad - as distinct from quiet - games has Van Persie had in the last couple of years?

Manufacturing excuses for Wayne is a Redcafe cottage industry. He always seems to be working his way back to form after a layoff, or suffering from a niggle, or recovering from a niggle, or not getting enough games, or getting too many games, or not yet hitting top form, or due to hit form any time now, or not quite the Wayne Rooney we all know tonight, or expected to become the Wayne Rooney we all know imminently, or.......

I expected more from him when he was twenty years old.
