The misses by Bale and Ronaldo on the volleys just made me value Rooney's finish vs West Ham even more. All three hit it pretty much first time and it shows the incredible technique required that even Ronaldo and Bale didn't get it in.

 Man, I know this site is full of Rooney haters waiting to pounce on anything to blame him and take discussion to his salary etc and what not and they really make me cringe, but this has got to be a WUM on your part. Ronaldo's effort was from too much sideways and he was unlucky still he almost scored. Bale too had lesser time or you can say used lesser time fractionally than Rooney. Also Bale's shot was from a position when ball was higher in the air, a much difficult thing to execute.

 That's great! While Ronaldo scores goals against top opposition, he couldn't score a goal like Rooney's against fecking West Ham even if he tried 100 times like Rooney!

The misses by Bale and Ronaldo on the volleys just made me value Jonjo Shelvey's finish vs Aston Villa even more. All three hit it pretty much first time and it shows the incredible technique required that even Ronaldo and Bale didn't get it in.

Could you not appreciate in comparison to the hundred times Rooney has tried it previously?

Not on any sort of WUM. Only thought of the Rooney goal because I've seen and heard it a lot of places that Shelveys goal was better than Rooney’s so watching Ronaldo and Bale miss their volleys just reinforced my view that the Rooney one required real technique. And of course Ronaldo and Bale are far better footballers than Rooney. Not even suggesting otherwise.

You can't say that since Rooney is shit and should be sold on the first bid made.

Hope I'm doing this right.

Wayne Rooney concerned by Manchester United's plans to install Louis Van Gaal as manager because of Dutchman's close relationship with Robin van Persie

Wayne Rooney is concerned about Manchester United’s plan to install Louis van Gaal as manager, because of the Dutchman’s close relationship with Robin van Persie.

The United frontman is believed to be worried that the situation could revert to how it was during Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge, when Van Persie became United’s first-choice striker.

Rooney was forced into a secondary role and nearly left the club, feeling he was being frozen out.

The England striker’s fortunes were transformed during David Moyes brief reign and he was set to be named captain for next season.

But that is not guaranteed now Van Gaal is set to be the new boss. With Moyes gone, Van Persie has returned to training after injury.

However, Van Gaal did move a step closer to securing the Old Trafford hotseat after Real Madrid's progression to the Champions League final almost certainly ruled Carlo Ancelotti out of the running.

The two men top United's shortlist of candidates to replace Moyes. The club are known to want a new manager in place as soon as possible to avoid the mistakes made last summer, and Ancelotti's commitments will now extend to the final in Lisbon on May 24.

United are understood to have delayed Van Gaal's appointment to see if Ancelotti would emerge as a genuine alternative or, at the very least, to use him as a bargaining chip in their negotiations with the Dutchman.

They believed there was a possibility that Ancelotti could have been available after one season at the Bernabeu if Real had failed to progress on Tuesday night and then lost out in the La Liga title race to neighbours Atletico Madrid or Barcelona, but that is no longer the case.

Another candidate, Atletico boss Diego Simeone, will also be out of reach until late May if the Spaniards overcome Chelsea in Wednesday's Champions League semi-final second leg at Stamford Bridge.

United will now come under pressure to appoint Holland coach Van Gaal before his World Cup commitments begin in earnest with a training camp on May 7.

Thought he was average against Norwich. Scored two so people think he played but I really wasn't that impressed. His overall game (like ball control and first touch) was still sloppy.

To be fair to him, he slipped quite a bit during the first half. However, other than that, he wasn't too bad with his first touch and ball control. In the 2nd half, he improved, but when he went to central midfield, he was pretty bad. The fact that he lost the ball twice in dangerous positions in central midfield really disappointed me and shows me that he can never be a central midfielder.

Rooney, among other player's, was unwelcome to any development from our playing style to a more continental passing method when we signed Kagawa apparently. I'd well believe his apprehension concerning van Gaal.

I think the "Rooney against Van Gaal" talk is based on little more than the fact that RVP and Van Gaal are both Dutch and Rooney openly backing interim manager Giggs in a post-match interview - as any player would do.

It will be lapped up on here unfortunately as Rooney seems to divide opinion still.

I don't buy this. He seems far happier when playing with the likes of Kagawa and Mata than with Valencia and Young (see West Brom away, Villa at home)

Well according to Andy Mitten after the second Champions League loss to Barcelona, Ferguson and the coaching staff believed a more continental method was desirable. This was why we purchased Kagawa, a style of player Ferguson had rarely purchased beforehand. Rooney and a few other's were less sold and wished to maintain the current approach.

Makes sense really. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case. Van Gaal coming will surely make RVP stay here for another season at least, and there is no way in hell Van Gaal will drop him unless he's turned into Crouch overnight.

I really am curious as to what'll happen. Van Gaal likes his 4-3-3 doesn't he? Will we see an interchangeable front 3 including Rooney and RVP? Both can definitely drift to the wing and put in a shift, but it'll be a bit awakward.

Interesting, do you happen to have a link to it?

Cheers, Mitten is pretty reliable so he must have heard that from someone within the club.
Got it.
The future looked bright for Kagawa. The shape of United’s team was evolving and Kagawa looked like he could become central to the way United play. Ferguson surrounded himself with able lieutenants like Rene Muelensteen, who was an advocate of a Barcelona-style high-pressing game with smaller players running around not letting other teams have the ball. Smaller players like Kagawa. There was a school of thought among the coaches that it was the right way to win the Champions League again.

It’s believed that some of the more senior players in the squad, like Rooney and Ferdinand, weren’t in favour. They felt United should stick to the tried and tested methods which have been so successful, especially domestically. They don’t make the decisions and there was a strong chance that Rooney wouldn’t be around to see any chances implemented.
Andy Mitten on Kagawa

Not a chance. Running around a lot and spraying hollywood balls to nowhere doesn't make a good midfielder nevermind a world class one.

As a number 9 he can be world class but not in midfield

I've seen Van Gaal work his magic and I believe that he could turn him into a world class CM. I don't like Van Gaal but he can reinvent certain players in a way that is amazing

I was peddling that chestnut all autumn. Now I've seen him there a few times this season (when he's dropped deep chasing a game) and unless he's got plenty of space when he's on the ball (which for us was rarely) he's truly terrible in midfield. He lacks the mobility and finesse.

Yeah I was one who thought he may be able to cut it as a CM but after seeing it often this season I don't have high hopes at all. He lacks a lot of qualities to make a good CM, especially for a top side.

Why should we accomodate him as a CM, he's simply "doing an OK job" there, and for 300k and main man, you'd have to be more than simply "doing OK" in a position.

If He can't cut it as striker, just sell him and get a better striker and a proper CM, instead of having a shit striker and a makeshift CM

I suspect things will change after the WC. If rvp performs well and Rooney does not LVG will have more leeway with the English media with respect to how he handles Rooney.

I agree with you. Before this season I thought he may have been able to do a job in CM, this season has shown me he can't though. If he is earning that kind of money he needs to be played up front (his best position) and playing well.

Second summer in a row where he is confused and angry?

And he lacks the positional discipline to be a quality cm

He'l never be a top quality CM. Dont know where people get these ideas from. He can do a job there but even that I never understand as we end up playing worse strikers upfront and moving him to CM totally nullifying him.

If Van Gaal comes here, Rooney will need to really up his game. No surprises he wants Giggsy as manager.

There's every chance Van Gaal will make Rooney the player he ought to be. He's the Tarantino of football managers.

Rooney has simply done what every player in his position would do. Get a better deal. I don't get the hate for him on this site. He's nearly always produced the goods for United for a decade, if we get an actual functioning midfield I could see him scoring 50.

You're paying 300k for a surgeon knife, but the surgeon knife isn't all that sharp. But hey, you can cut steak with it. Happy time! Profit!

We have a fancy surgeon knife that cut steaks!

EDIT: What do we do with the steak knife? And how are we gonna cut that man without a Surgeon knife? Great questions. Let's use our steak knife to cut that guy!

I can't wait to see LVG bench Rooney. If fit RVP should start as our No9. It would be a great sign to show everyone who is the boss but the fallout may be significant. Rooney, his camp and the media will moan and groan, putting a lot of pressure on LVG.
Winning, however, would quiet everyone.

There probably will be pressure from the marketing divisions to play him as well. Unless we sign another big name player.

LvG stamping down his authority on Rooney will be good to see though. And as far as I'm personally concerned, I wouldn't mind Rooney being sold out to some team outside the country.
