He should've been sold when the opportunity was there. Nothing will change my mind. Far too prone to shite like that.

They were both better. Rooney was awful from minute one, throughout the whole match. Kagawa and Mata did at least have a decent 30 minutes and Mata wasn't wasting possession and stopping our play like Rooney did. He was by far the worst player on the pitch. Of that there is no doubt.

You too are 100% correct. Why Kagawa was substituted and not Rooney is beyond me. And I don't agree that Rooney is the reason that we have stayed top half of the table this season. I believe we would have done better without him. With Welbeck and/or Hernandez ahead of Kagawa/Mata/third option, we would be much more dynamic. With RVP instead of Rooney we would be much better technically. Rooney has scored 15 goals this season in the PL and people talk as if he is our saviour. He's been average but on a world class pay.

It's just wrong to scapegoat a player who's by far our most productive and best outfield player this season, and who's been an extremely important component of this football club for a decade. Just stop, please. It's wrong.

But, but, he said a mean thing four years ago and hurt my feelings! :(

Thought he had a poor game, we really didn't have that many injuries that we had to play Rooney today. If he's not fully fit he's shown he suffers for it more than others, wasn't as bad as the Bayern game but he was still poor and with Hernandez/Welbeck looking better in recent times and Mata/Kagawa coming off some form I think we would have been better off.

Think it clicked today he is the problem. Last few games, injury or not have been unbelievably poor. If he isn't match fit then he shouldn't be fecking playing.

It was frustrating seeing how often our attacks are ruined by Rooney's dallying on the ball and bad first touch. I know Everton are much better than Newcastle but we looked far more fluent in attack at St James' Park.

It's agenda-driven to say a player has been poor because it's Wayne Rooney. Grow up

I think 'he's been poor' is a slight misrepresentation of some of the things that have been said about Rooney in this thread lately.

Blame Moyes for his poor management of Rooney, it's true he's scared of high-profile players, and so will play Rooney and van Persie when they are not fit, and are scared to substitute or drop said players if they are playing poorly. However, don't blame the players for this, blame Moyes.
Completely agree with you about Moyes management of him, but given the fact wayne could break into your house on xmas morning, piss on your kids and crap on your turkey and it would be the houses fault for letting him in, I have to ask, if he had been on the bench today or subbed very early, would you honestly not have had an issue with that?

I personally don't disagree with a lot if what's been said recently. But I probably have an agenda.

The ones that stand out the most are when he had the most obvious passes on to Nani, then Mata but both times went for the stupid option that would never come off. He looked like he couldn't be bothered in the 2nd half. Kept passing to blue shirts, putting in a daft challenge and missing a sitter. Moyes should have brought him off, again, but like Munich he was too scared. He has no clue how to deal with top players. Just like when he kept rvp on against Newcastle when he was injured because the fans wouldn't be happy. Grow some balls ffs

Was poor today, but I think he needs time to adjust to playing as the main striker again and not having to take as much responsibility for creating for others. He's better when he's got a strike partner alongside him, admittedly, but of course with the state of our midfield we can't really afford to play two out and out strikers.

I think people will be surprised next season by how much a quality midfielder will make to this team and the performance levels of our strikers.

Moyes will get criticised for keeping him on, but despite being so poor throughout the game he could have had a goal and an assist in the last few minutes. Mata was equally poor today, why were people not calling for him to be hauled off?

No, it's just that when it *is* Wayne Rooney, the criticism comes much thicker and much faster than with certain other players. I don't think he played well today, but then nor did anyone else. Don't think he was much worse than Mata, Kagawa or Welbeck. He was actually better than a few others.

But it's Rooney who's getting the pelters. I understand it to an extent. He's supposed to be the star player, the world class match winner, and gets a pay packet to reflect that. So when he plays badly, there's bound to be criticism focused on him. There is also clearly some lingering resentment over the transfer requests.

All that said, I do think he's scapegoated to a degree, his 'shitness' hugely exaggerated. and he isn't given anything like the leeway more fashionable players are.

Because Rooney's on 300 grand a week apparently and Mata plays for free as everyone on here has clearly seen everyone of our players wage slips! Everyone was poor today baring Fletcher but scape-goating always happens on here were Rooney is concerned. It was awful tactically trying to fit in Kagawa again, we were just completely exposed down his side, that was probably Rooney's fault too. On the game the execution was poor from Rooney today imo but the idea was correct that's what I don't get with the views expressed the ball out wide was the correct ball as Everton were so congested in the middle section we needed to use the wide areas to break them down.

Somethings not right with him. Seems like he is going through is annual slump or he is carrying an injury. Welbeck or Hernandez really should be starting until he is up to his game again.
He's been here for a decade, and nothing will ever change. The sad part is that we are going to be stuck with him as he's declining near his 30s and we get more and more of these performances. He will score goals, have good games here and there but he never has been in the top tier of players, although he does show flashes every now and then, they are just few and far between these days and we get more of the pub player Rooney.

So every time one criticises a player they have to ensure equal criticism of the next player??

If only they were all awarded with the captains armband, £250k + a week and never get substituted. He is treated differently by management, so I think it's quite fair that a few insignificant people such as myself on an Internet forum can type a few words which may stick the knife in a bit more. But Kagawa Mata and Welbeck were a bit shit too so let's be fair and distribute the abuse (in the Rooney thread).

The performance today was terrible, he seems to be caught in-between being a center forward and thinking like a #9 while being poor at both.

Alright then Rooney was very shit and Kagawa and Mata were just shit. Better?

No idea why he played today really. Man Utd don't want to be in the Europa League, and he's got a bruised toe.....so the effort obviously wasn't going to be there since he doesn't want a third world cup with an injury. Baffling. Performance showed it too, same for most who are obviously going to the World Cup. Mostly protecting their bodies.

He's pub quality player in games like Everton or Bayern, deal with it. fecking rubbish today to say the least.

First it was crying because he wants to play as a striker, we play him as a striker and he still roams around the whole fecking field while we've got three players behind him who can produce and assist him and he still goes all the way down to the midfield to pick up the ball and then we've got nobody to finish in the box. By doing such shit he's only building confidence in Moyes to stick two fecking strikers because then there's nobody in the box. When RVP will be back we'll be back to awful Rooney-RVP partnership and will produce feck all again.

Can't wait.

It is amazing how he can go from a really good performer to a poor one. Even Suarez or Bale on their worst day are still influential to the team performance. The negative in his performance today outweighed the positive and that is not a good sign for our top player and earner. Even though his stats says that he does not have a consistency problem, I still think that is a big flaw in his game. In particular, when he is unmotivated.

Our entire team played with no cohesion and with basically no plan or tactics, but Rooney was especially poor. His touch, passing and decision making were poor.

I don't want to blame him too much, he is notorious for his slow start after an injury, and the manager should be aware of that. He should have been subbed off, or came off the bench, but he should not have completed the 90 mins.

He was poor, but after that the manager should notice that and make the right decision to sub him.

This.

Total lack of positional discipline whatsoever today despite the fact that we had some of the best passers behind him. I don't think I can emphasize enough on how he must be ordered to keep his sorry fat ass in line with the last defender and nothing more. What also doesn't help is how the manager did feck all to put some order through that mess.

I already had a bad feeling when I saw his name on the team sheet. My fears were only confirmed after that. We better pray to get a manager who will kick Rooney's undisciplined butt in all senses of the term because it will only get worse with Rooney working for our current loser of a manager.

Utter crap today. Really do believe in his contract he must have a "never sub unless injured" clause. It's quite ridiculous how a player of his calibre can be so bad or 90 minutes, and miss the easiest chance of the game when it falls to him.

He wasnt talking about a single game

Odd that he would bring this up after a game that Rooney was 20 yards deeper than him and didn't get in his way. Guess he was talking about a game a few weeks before. How odd! Or maybe he was referring to the couple of times he clashed with Welbeck in the box that game (maybe he feels it has happened before).

Yeah, he was obviously talking about Welbeck  That one block is the biggest reason for his poor form.

RvP doesn't think he's been poor now does he? I'm just talking about his 'running in my lines' comment said in the heat immediately after the game.

Can't put into words how angry I am with this twat. He's unbelievably talented, but he's a complete and utter liability when he plays like he did today and against Bayern. His inconsistency will stop him from becoming a true United 'great'.

We weren't playing with a striker today because he decided to occupy Kagawa and Mata's space and drop deep all the time, pinging useless balls out to Smalling. We have Danny and Chicha, who we know would stretch the defence and make runs as forwards, which Rooney doesn't seem to fancy.

For someone of his talent and earning what he earns, he shouldn't be this much of a headache.

His decision making today was hilarious. Even Buttner was baffled.

Can someone make gif of his three in a row(I think) passes to Everton players, the last one leading to their counter attack when they won a penalty. I think it all happened inside of one minute.

He was discussing his this year's form, and it's quite obvious to everyone who watched United when Rooney and van PErsie played together this season that Rooney is the one who stays too close to him.

Rooney is always deep, playing midfield a lot of the time. He's never in 'persie's running channels'. Run your eyes over the olympiakos match again and you'll see.

No thanks.

It's obviously Welbeck, player who once played 20 minutes alongside van Persie what was enough for Robin to blame him for his lack of form.

He's not worth remotely the wages he's making. I wish we had gotten rid of him. His lack of consistency is a joke. To think some people believe he's one of the best in the world... He could have been, but he's never come close to reaching his potential.

Sounds like he's talking about the game to me. Unless you're talking about a different interview.

I've not been as impressed as others with him this season. I think he's numbers really flatter to deceive myself.

In the context of where our goals have come from (set pieces) I suppose he's been key because he's set up/scored probably 15+ from set pieces but I have been largely unimpressed with his general play which compounds why we're so reliant on set-pieces.

I don't hate him or anything, but I don't think he adds a great deal more than any other the other attacking players (excluding Ashley Young) to our play if you exclude set-pieces. His technical ability just isn't what it once was and that is very frustrating in a time where all these fancy little touches, flicks and well-worked goals at a ridiculous pace are what win football games. Amongst other players in the first-team, he spends a lot of time slowing us down rather than building us up.

I really hope I'm just overreacting to a poor run of form in the last few weeks, but I don't enjoy watching him play football anymore. Where's that spark and magic gone?
