He's quite the enigma. Has there ever been a player so talented but with such a bad bottom level?

I have been watching football regularly since 1996 and I honestly cannot remember having seen a player like him who goes from very good to very bad from one match to another.

It was really stupid, gave him a yellow card for nothing and could have easily been red carded. There was no need to throw himself against him but just because Rafa wanted to act like a tough man, he's been making these tackles on a regular basis. Absolutely nothing to gain from them but unnecessary bookings.

I agree that he can make these tackles at times, but he has just 3 yellow cards this season, it's not like he is doing it all the time.

OTT criticism as usual on here when it comes to Rooney. He didn't have a great game yes but he was trying, had one great run, had our one shot on target and was running around throwing himself into challenges and looking like he cares. Granted that's not much but he was better than our other forward players. It's bizarre that this thread gets bumped up and RvP, who had yet another woeful game and missed yet another sitter, escapes the criticism.

It wasn't a sitter, and he was offside anyway. Rooney's chance(yeah, that shot on target where he missed the ball) was easier to score anyway.

Working hard and playing fairly well are not the same thing. Same with Rafael.

Well no one had a good game for us. Rafael, Fellaini and Rooney were the ones putting in their all atleast.

The RvP header?

Yes they were trying. Rooney should be in a category of his own though not in the same one as a 23 year old right back who has struggled for form this season

Didn't expect his performances to improve much, he's always been like this. New contract, more money, more influence, pretty much everything he wanted and nothing will change on the pitch. Love how he was having a go at the ref for about 5 minutes about not getting a penalty when he blatantly jumped into Skrtel trying to con him.

I thought Rooney was particularly poor today. His touch was simply horrific and nothing whatsoever seemed to come off for him. I don't know if it's because he tries too hard in games like these but he was completely ineffective.

People expect so much from him. The sad fact is that he isn't that good. Don't get me wrong - he's a quality player, but he isn't world class anymore. The difference between him, Suarez, Ronaldo, Messi, Ribery, last year's RVP and Silva is huge. His first touch is a big problem in that position. His short passing has never been good enough, and he squanders a lot of possession.

Well exactly, and for what he's apparently earning it's just not good enough. I'd rather have someone do his job adequately than someone who tries and fails miserably.

Our best player today easily (followed by Mata), set up our best chances for RVP, had our only shot on target and struck the volley afterwards very well that would've probably gone in. He was desperate to win but didn't have the platform behind him.

He was desperate to win but couldnt pass the ball. He had a couple of nice dribbles and took on some shots trying to do it alone.

He talks too much lately, that's for sure.

Created our only chances apart from the shot on target he took himself, not bad for someone who couldn't pass. If we were going to score today, it would have come from him. RVP with two unusual timid efforts from his passes.

Only RVP and DDG were more astray with their passes

Pretty much. I think that he doesn't offer enough. He's a nailed on starter, but doesn't play as one. I for one would love to see a Nani, Kagawa, Mata behind Welbeck. Put Rooney in midfield if must be, but I would like to see a better passing front four and quicker feet.

Far too overated IMO and far too inconsistent for a player who is supposedly world class. well, he's got his contract now so it won't matter to him how he plays at all. Only costs United 300K a week for that as well. When he's good he's good, but when he's poor, he's shocking.

It's mainly because in certain games or during certain sequences, he can elevate his game to a level below Messi/Ronaldo but it doesn't last nearly long enough. He shows a glimpse of how good he could be only to become his true erratic self. I miss the Rooney who was just asked to score goals and played up top, giving him more responsibilities just makes his inconsistencies too visible.

In terms of long term effects Moyes could have on the club, giving him a 5 and a half year contract is so far the worst possible one.

Was our best player at City as well.

Because he scored a consolation goal when United were already out of the match? Not saying much is it?

Very good vs Arsenal at home if I'm not wrong.

I seem to remember United being overrun for large parts of that match and hanging on for dear life against an insipid Arsenal side. I would say his performance was not that good either.

Yeah, getting our best player to sign a new contract is far worse than blowing tens of millions on pointless players and costing us bucketloads of CL money.

The people who hate Rooney really fecking hate him, don't they.

I don't hate Rooney, I just think giving a player whos position in the team is not without question marks ridiculous sums of money into his mid-thirties has a real chance of back firing.

Good assessment - sounds about right.

His bottom level is the level of a League Two player. He tried today but his first touch and generally rhythm was so off. So so slow, could barely protect the ball.

Rooney has only stagnated the team... completely worthless for a new contract and we should have flogged him off to the renties, last summer.

Back then Mata was high on testosterone and with Mourinho willing to offload we would've got him for cheap had it been a swap deal with Rooney.

Get a new CM, and build the attack around Kagawa was all that was needed to start the season.

Instead, the spazzer Moyes just to demonstrate his authority refrain from going after Mata, arm twist this fat gimp to stay at United. Rooney shows some flashes and gradually hacks Moyes there by sealing a new contract.

Moyes plotted his own downfall by constantly backing only the wrong players from Rooney to Ashley Young.

He and Van Persie don't work we already know that, he isn't a 10 we already know that. The fact that he is put in both situations is the manager's fault.

Earlier in the season most were singing his praises now he isn't good enough and now he has robbed the club.

That's why he's not world class and never has been. You never see world class players on their "off days" being unable to do the basics of controlling the ball.

He's been like that with RVP all season. Its resulted in Rooney scoring more goals than last season and us struggling to create as much

We all know which of those two things Rooney cares about more. It may be down to Moyes but he's played on top of RVP all season. It doesn't help that we have a huge hole behind the strikers because the midfield sits so deep or that the last few matches Fellaini has a tendency to play alongside Rooney and RVP up front after passing it to Carrick.
