I am laughing at how stupid people are who criticised Rooney last night!

They have no perspective. It is so simple why he did not play like he should and being taken off at 60-70mins is a clue!

Rooney has not played since 25th of Feburary! All the other teams have played last week!!

Why are people so ignorant!?

It is so frustrating as I can't tell everyone this.

So? He got a 10 day rest and it's normal for him to play like shit? And yet many of us slagging Kagawa who only play once a month for not playing like Messi?

Dear me

I put this in the newbies - the amount of England fans jumping to conclusions based on last night is a bit daft. He, along with Gerrard, clearly looked like two players with nothing to play for... both were just going through the motions, in the knowledge that they will both be on that plane in the Summer.

If he turns it on for us on Saturday, then him barely breaking a sweat for England will have been worth it.
it is bizarre how fans jump to conclusions based on one game. Especially when it's a friendly. I assume most, if not all of us understand that football is an emotional game and we can say things with more considered thought, we probably didnt mean to say. however there's this bizarre urge to draw conclusions from one game. Yet football shows us so many times how things can change quickly. that can go for perceptions too. all in all, would say it's not always so easy to come to conclusions because of the many factors which exist in the game let alone the pitch. yet fans will make conclusions on a game or two on a whim, sometimes without putting any further thought into it

Oh come on; if you read my reply to that you know I was only joking - from time to time, that is allowed. (Agreed that it wasn't funny though)

Reading comments on the United website there are quite a few fans wanting rid of RVP because of his age. To me that seems completely wrong as we demand loyalty from the players, but the fans are ready to turn the back on the players way too quickly after a poor spell - and RVP isn't even playing that poorly.
this. i was thinking about it the other day when my timeline was a constant stream of consciousness on how we need to clear out the squad. yes there are some members of the squad which we probably should sell but like you said, we demand loyalty from all of our players yet are happy to see them out the door in hope of some new player or whatever if the supposed circumstances are right.

just sums up our hypocrisy imo.

 Jesus. I didn't see the game so can't comment on Rooney's performance but to excuse a shit performance just because he hasn't played in 10 days is absolute ridiculousness. Had he been injured in that time, thus not training and then rushed back half fit for the game then fair enough, but that wasn't the case at all.

I didn't think Rooney was as bad as all that. He was largely 'okay' with a few good moments. Unfortunately for him his most memorable moments in the game were 3 long shots he ballooned over the bar from almost identical positions and those moments stick in the memory more than anything else.

Rooney is not any player, we all know this!

He need constant matches to keep fit.

Yeah, laugh at your own ignorance

I just can't believe how soft you are.

These are two different posters who are ignorant of the factors that effect performances levels that are different to each player because of their body type.

Ignorance is not an offensive word and that is why I am calling you 'soft' as you get effected by non-offensive words. Ignorance is constructive criticism as those posters would know they they don't know about this subject thus they have to research more about it.

Don't come to me all high and mighty.

 Dude honestly I don't effin care what you say. The posts I pointed out weren't aimed at me so I shouldn't really care.. But respecting your fellow posters is the least you can do.. Don't wanna do it ? Fine by me.

There is a difference between saying offensive words and criticism.

If they feel that I was being offensive to them, they would tell me and I would stop. This does not concern you.

It has every reason to concern him as a poster on the site, don't be so precious yourself, you can't go around throwing out insults and cry when someone pulls you up on it, we all get annoyed when people don't see our view, but remember that's all it is, your point of view, not fact.

I thought Rooney was really quite poor for England, but in general I think Rooney's hampered by expectations of him being a world class player, and he isn't. He's a brilliantly talented footballer, and is of a very high level, but he's below the (Messi/CR) Ibra/Iniesta/Falcao bracket for me... Hence, I don't expect this crazy insane form constantly, he's the best England have, but England to overhype their own players and pay more for them...

He was also promoted into the No 9 position at the expense of a more in-form striker, i don't think we'll see a repeat any time soon. Ultimately though, the substitutes ahd mroe intent and threat to their game when they were brought on.

Yet Danny had played comparatively fewer minutes of football than Rooney, if anything the extra few days rest should a benefit with nearly three-quarters of the season now behind us.

I still believe it's him or van Persie do not work, and the team needs to lose one of them to properly advance. Ideally, that should be Rooney in my view, simply because Persie is the better centre-forward. I think Rooney's new deal is a bit extreme, he is grossly over-paid relative to his ability in my view. He isn't Suarez/Aguero calibre. Also, at his age, we have made a committment to 'building a team around' (hate the expression) a player approaching 30.

For the good of the team, I wouldn't be adverse to Persie leaving, although I think he is the better player. The gap between them isn't huge, and we just need one of them out of the first XI, and neither will be subs. We had the opportunity to move Rooney on, and I think we should have, although I can understand the reasons for keeping him.

A massive gap of 8 days. Didn't know it was that long.

Good post. I agree.

Anonymous performance from Rooney so far again. That new contract is really paying off well. What does he have to do to get dropped?

Apparently we are gonna make him captain. My days...

PS) and then he scores. LMAO

Rooney and Van Persie. Doesn't seem there's a lot of love there. RVP goes off and Rooney's level goes up. Hmm...

Rooney has been fantastic since RVP went off.

The goal (which he started), more involved all over the pitch, and then two lovely through balls for Welbeck from which Danny scored one.

I think there must be something going on between Rooney and RVP. They seem incapable of playing together this season.

Bingo. I've said it for a while, I don't mind seeing RVP go if it meant Rooney being the main man up front.

He may have played poorly for his standards today, but he still mustered a goal and an assist. That type of player.

Rooney was fantastic after Rvp went off. Perfectly floated pass to Wellbeck, goal and so much good passing and exchanges with Mata.

Help me understand this guy, how the hell can he go from looking a gimp championship player and a world class one in the same match ? Why is his touch so inconsistent  It is so infuriating because he could do so much better for the team

There's not a great deal of chemistry between the two, RVP is not a happy player right now.

For a good portion of the game Rooney was continuing his England performance and that can't all be attributed to his strike partner, a player of his reputation must do markedly better from the off.

Typical Rooney performance. Many poor first touches. Lost the ball cheaply. Then produces some moments of quality.

Clear that him and rvp both can't play together. A shame, but it is what it is. Both were a bit ineffective until rvp came up, opening some space for Rooney and he did great afterwards.

that's rooney, he can be so poor for 89 minutes but still came up with a goal or an assists. his first touch and his short passing aren't his strong points for sure.

I do think that Rooney is held to much higher standards than pretty much any other player in the league - including by some of our fans.

He's not allowed to miscontrol a ball or misplace a pass without someone jumping on his ass straight away.

'See! He's shit! Overrated! Does nothing!'.

It's partly a result of his high profile and big wage packet meaning he's bound to attract close scrutiny, and if you ask me, partly a result of English players just not being very fashionable at the minute.

But he's averaging better than a goal or assist per game at the moment, numbers which are as good as pretty much anyone's in the league.

Yup, that's Rooney. Shite for the most part yet, bizarrely, insanely productive. Very frustrating.

He had a good second half, so fair play.

Poor performance up until Van Persie went off IMO, but can Moyes please tell Rooney and Van Persie to remain more than 5 yards from each other when Mata has the ball?

If numbers are all he is bringing to the table, I'd rather he play as a striker, where his substandard general play won't hurt the team.

'Substandard general play'? Not really. He's usually efficient at worst, and frequently good.

Strange that this guy whose general play is 'substandard' has managed to rack up so many games for one of the most successful club sides in world football.

Isn't part of the problem that both he and Van Persie are trying to do that at the same time already? It wasn't as if he was playing deep and linking the play well in that first 50-60 minutes.

Semantics. Rooney's all round play in the build up can be horribly inconsistent, particularly for a player of his ability. Substandard, call it what you want, it wasn't good enough today.
