Sublime management from Moyes, taking his most decisive attacking player, particularly in the important matches, and forcing him to play in central midfield. Outstanding. Einstein himself would be in awe of Moyes' genius.

We may have underestimated Rooney's loyalty, because there is no way any player with reasonable ambition would want to stay at this shambles of a football club.
I knew it would be some one else's fault

spent the last 25 minutes trying those long range passes from center midfield to the flanks... pretty much all of them intercepted and a waste.

One short passing combination with Kagawa and we almost score. Thats what i want to see more often.
I wonder if there is a defender in Europe who doesn't know that when he gets the ball deep it's 80% likely going straight to the right flank

There was one situation where both Young and van Persie were in good positions and it would be pretty much goalscoring chances if he passed to them, but he stopped the counter attack, and decided to try diagonal to Valencia, and failed.

Had a shocker today until the end where he showed one quality moment to get the ball to Kagawa. Not the only one tbf but he had one of those days where you think we might well have been better off subbing him off.

Probably has a clause in his contract saying we can't. To be fair he was poor but so was everyone else. Might as well have just kept them all in the locker room at half time and forfeited the game

Honestly not worth £300 a week when he plays like that. That's why he's never been world class, on his bad games he can't even do the basics of football.

We estimate his loyalty highly I'd say, up to 300k pounds a week that is.

Wouldn't be suprised. Yeah no doubt he wasn't the only bad one but again we needed him in that key role today. He gets back fine but when we get on the ball he's far too high up the pitch. I mean today it might not have even made a huge amount of difference as his passing was off/ others were rubbish, but in general we need him to stay a bit deeper a bit longer to let us actually build some momentum to the move.

Seems to feel an obligation to try to ping lots of Hollywood balls when he gets moved into midfield. Whether they're on or not.

Think it just fits in to his style there. He wants to ping it wide and run in the box. Would work fine if we had wingers who could deliver. Currently it's not ideal. That said it does sometimes feel like he does it automatically at times. He's got it in his locker to try different passes more often than he does.

don't make excuses. rooney is capable of worldly passes but he's also one of the most inconsistent passers in the world, he just fecks up the easiest things to do and always gives away the ball unforced. he's not technically flawless like other worldclass players of his level, he is worldclass because of his intelligence, his movement, and his understanding of the game, but he lacks the skills to consistently be a threat. just today i noticed one movement where he brought the ball under control under pressure in the middle, turned to pass to the wide open valencia, and his long pass was off by 20 yards or so, this is AFTER beating the man.

rooney is getting paid more then ronaldo, messi, pretty much every footballer in the world and that's pretty much a joke to me. you want bang for your buck, and at best, rooney is one of the top 5-10 players in the world, 19 weeks out of the 38 we have to play each year. i understand that it was crucial to retain rooney, and that this wage may have been forced rather then deserved, but i really feel negative to rooney if he really believes what he's done the past 2-3 seasons has been worth 300k a week.

this is what messi at his best did, and this has always been rooney's preferred type of play, moyes or fergie or fecking capello. he's always been the deep dropping attacking midfielder before being a natural striker.

I think Rooney's passing is underrated. He obviously would never be a possession midfielder but then that's not the point. You don't put Rooney in midfield and ask him to play like Leon Britton. You have him in there to compliment the other midfielders. His passing is as good as most box-to-box midfielders that spring to mind. He also has the strength, work rate, aggression, drive, defensive awareness, footwork, vision, close control, dribbling skill, shooting skills etc etc (the list could go on) that would compliment Kagawa (or Mata's) skill set. It's all about balance, innit. Rooney would contribute to our attacking play whilst also relieving Kagawa (or Mata) of some of their defensive responsibility, so they can concentrate on the old play-a-makin' shtick.

You are describing a different player as Rooney is distinctively average in those departments.

No, you are just wrong.

You should try Specsavers then.

Was crap tonight. When the RVP/Rooney partnership doesn't bear fruit Moyes manages to dodge the decision by subbing a midfielder and moving Rooney back (sometimes justifiably). I still don't see Wayne as a midfielder even if he is sometimes capable of improving us there in some matches.

Whole team play shocking. Focus on bashing Rooney.

Surprise, surprise.

Indeed, no player today played a good game, Rooney was one of them who was at least decent.

Cleverley, Smalling, Valencia that was just phatetic today

Carrick, Ferdinand really bad

Vidic, DDG, Evra, Young, Rooney and RVP were half decent (at best)

Kagawa and Welbeck didn't really do much either, but just having Valencia and Cleverley off the pitch made us instantley better (if we did that move at half time, we might even have turned this game around, but was too little too late)

I know this issue has been raised a lot of times but when will Moyes realise Rooney is not a natural #10? Seriously need to give that position to Kagawa or Mata. The partnership isn't exactly clicking with RVP either in the current set up. Either play them both up top or have them fight for the same position. Heck, play Rooney back in centre mid given he's signed a new contract as long as the team benefits from it (which is highly likely if the other option is Cleverley). We have two of the best attacking midfielders in the league, much more suited to the #10 role and would fix a lot of the current issues IMO if given a string of games in the role.

Some of the comments on here are beyond laughable about his performance today. He wasn't great, but jeez was he far from being the worst.

Such comments will become the norm unfortunately. People lining themselves to have a dig at him with many of the usual suspects.

He played as a #10 a lot even under Fergie and did brilliantly.

He ran further last night than any other player on the pitch. I think it is noticeable that he has lost a great deal of pace though and that does worry me a little.

Interestingly I found a copy of Four Four Two from 2010 yesterday and in it Shevchenko partnered Rooney alongside Luis Ronaldo in his 'perfect XI'. I also remember Messi naming Rooney in his dream team on the UEFA website, both praised his work rate and team ethic.

All that aside I just can't shake the niggling feeling that Rooney's contract will be seen as a symbol of Moyes's failings at United in 5 years team.

Unsurprising... I may be wrong on this, but I reckon there would probably be a correlation between how much running Rooney does with how well he played. I tend to find that, when he's having a poor game, he'll try his best to compensate for it with loads of running - which is a fine trait to have really.

Of course that could just be nonsense.

This x10. Rooney is such a better play on the last man. This doesn't necessarily mean he can't drop into the hole now and again to link up the game but having him in that position on the half turn, it isn't natural for him. Also it leaves Rvp isolated and not receiving any service.

If Kagawa/Mata/Januzaj were to play in that position, our play would be much more fluid and we would score more goals at will. At the moment, even with our crossing tactic there is only ever RvP to aim for so the opposition defence have a relatively easy time unless it's a pinpoint ball.

Rooney needs to be played in his natural position.

Carrick, RvP, Cleverly, Young and Valencia didn't even seem to care about what was happening on the pitch. Rooney, Evra, Rio and Smalling were all shit last night but at least they looked like it bothered them that the game was going so badly.

I wish people would stop saying that. Of course they all care about the club even Young and Valencia. They need a manager who can restore their confidence and get them back to their best.

Okay saying they didn't care is a bit unfair it's probably more a case of their heads hanging low because they were demoralized. But I think it's sad that some of our team didn't put up more of a fight. Of course this is also down to the manager who can't seem to motivate a large part of our squad at all.

If Moyes does go, its going to be a strange situation for a new manager walking into a club where the captain has been picked for him and he is contractually obliged to go along with it. Hopefully that wont put anyone off.

Rooney is a natural leader and should be the captain of United and England. For any potential new manager, he would be grateful for the situation of Rooney.

Seems there is a backlash regarding Rooney from an England point of view (from fans of course).

All I've heard this morning is that all he does is slow the game down and pass it out wide. I don't think they're wrong either, it's been the pattern since he returned from injury.

he was very average last night, had a couple of pathetic long shots which were way off - England looked better when he was replaced by Welbeck!

He generally is very average when he plays for England is he not?
