People have such insanely high expectations for Rooney... Says a lot about how good he is that people feel he's not been doing as well as he ought to. Chuffed he's signed a new contract :)

Maybe the fact he's one of the highest paid players in the world has something to do with it.

The technique on that finish is top class.

He's weird is our Wayne, some of the stuff he does is technically flawless and really quite amazing... and yet his first touch will often let him down. Anyway, more of the same from him and nobody can argue against 300K a week.

Fergie has almost always been soft on his best players, including Rooney when signed his previous contract, lest you forget...Additionally, if Fergie found himself in a position like Moyes does (potentially losing many of his best players), he'd have done the exact same thing.

I'm not sure that those points are directly relevant to either Sultan's post or my reply to it.

In all likelihood Sir Alex would have sold Rooney last summer anyway and we wouldn't be facing an exodus such as this so...

People have been voicing this kind of stuff for years. Also, valuation is dependent on other things than just ability. Torres cost 50 mill pounds for Chelsea, Fellaini cost us 27, etc. etc. It's not really something we should be focusing on, unless we're talking about the club's spending of money, rather than players' abilities.

I want him to play upfront for the next four years personally. Let's see what happens with Van Persie in the summer.

Are you really that complacent in ushering out of the club the most important player of a Premier League triumph?

Moyes has rolled the dice but whether the striking position is something we can be confident about i would question, particularly with us also standing to0 lose Hernandez this summer.

If we had to sell van Persie to facilitate a Kroos or Gündoğan I'd be all for it. He's our best player but if we're looking to the future we should look to play Rooney further forward as he's going nowhere.

I just don't think RVP will want to stay. He doesn't have a strong link with us. Yes, he won his first PL title with us but apart from that he has no real reason to stay to help us rebuild. He's 31 this year - he might want to be challenging for European and Domestic honours.

I'll be sad, but with Rooney staying it definitely softens the blow. Rooney is 2 goals shy of being United's 3rd top goalscorer for a reason. It's incredible he's reached this figure considering he's barely played as a centre forward and been in the shadow of players such as Ronaldo and RVP (last season).

Nothing to do with complacency. It's about making decisions which will help the club. Rooney is best as a no.9 now, Van Persie as good as he is (best striker in the league for me) is going to be 31 next birthday and he is on big wages. I would rather we sold him and brought in some quality in other positions where we need it.

So you are of the belief that Van Persie would probably have tired to leave regardless of how the Rooney situation was handled?

Does that mean you'll be calling for Rooney to be sold a couple of years from now? ;)

More seriously though and in response to your last point, do i apprehend correctly in interpreting it to mean that you wouldn't replace RVP? In terms of simple numbers we could well be on the verge of losing two forwards this summer, an area of the squad which shouldn't have been a weakness risks being just that. Throw in the regularity to which Wayne suffers injuries and our resources will be spread thin.

I am very pleased that the contract negotiations between the player and the club have been concluded. It means that the speculation can come to a swift end and we can all focus on winning. It is a massive statement for the club that says we want to keep our best players. Credit to all involved for making this deal happen.

I'm glad he's staying even though we won't make the Champions League for next season. I thought he and RVP would probably want to leave because of no CL but glad that Rooney is staying.

Same as any other top player of his ability and profile.

No I wouldn't replace him, we have Hernandez and it's now or never for Welbeck. If Hernandez were to leave then we would have to go about replacing him which is quite difficult, not many strikers have his nose for goal. In a side creating more chances Hernandez would be a valuable second striker and option off the bench.

I though of that as you mentioned it. That is a very good point, could Hernandez/Welbeck lead the line for a significant amount of time? There is only one way to find out....

Just been watching mutv highlights of our games in CL this year. Almost every single goal was either set up or scored by Wayne. He's been immense in that competition this year

Hernandez is if anything more likely to leave than Van Perise, the game time being offered to him simply falls well short of what could be tolerated.

The idea of not replacing him intrigues me, as so many on here were bemoaning the vast expense required to locate a successor for Rooney, why such a contrasting reaction?

I think Mata would have been Rooney's successor if he left, then we would have had Mata behind Van Persie. Rooney staying changes all of that.

I feel we need a more fluid attack with players who are able to change positions and pick up different spots on the pitch. This makes them harder to pick up and be marked out of the game. We also need pace, our attack/midfield lacks it.

Hernandez wants to leave because he isn't playing enough. If Van Persie left he moves up to second choice striker and the extra playing time I feel would be enough to make him happy.
Another question, is he good enough to be our second striker and play upfront for a significant period of time. Also I really want to see what Danny can do up there too. I know some won't want to give him a chance but I would not be adverse to it.

It will be an interesting summer, I feel like Moyes will sell Van Persie but let's see. Before thinking about letting him go I would like to see our problem areas addressed.

Treasure of a player. Absolutely spectacular goal against Crystal Palace, and marvelous link-up play with Mata. It's such an honour to have him at the club, and was enthralled when I read that his contact was confirmed.

What does it say about the nature of this club's fans when many here were disappointed or angry when they read that the club had secured Rooney for the remainder of his career at the top level? This seems like unadulterated arrogance, complacency, and a quite repulsive sense of hypocritical moral superiority. Would fans of any other club in the world be angry to hear that their club had managed to secure a player who's been at the club for a decade and has been delivering performances of the highest calibre both domestically and in European competition? It's just so completely bizarre. The club manages to retain its most important player during a season of utter turmoil and chaos, and yet some fans see this as a defeat? It's sheer lunacy, and at an unprecedented scale.

Rooney love in all of a sudden

I find it bizarre people are willing to let RvP leave.

It is everyone's obsession with wanting either Mata or Kagawa behind the striker. RVP and Rooney remain our best players and the most likely to win a game for us, they also won the title last season.

As long as we are attracting other top players with his wages it's ok.

I agree keeping him is a good move and that he will be vital as we rebuild but an honour!?! What planet are you on mate, there isn't a single player that would stay with us if we ended up in a position like rangers for example. They would all be chasing the next big payday despite most if them having enough money to last several lifetimes. Everyone of them should be honoured to play for utd, NOT the other way round

Not sure if he was the worst player on the pitch but if not, then he was a close 2nd. His 2nd half display was a disgrace. I counted 7 errors from him in the 2nd half alone (9 in total). Next highest was the abysmal Smalling with 3 in the 2nd half, 5 in total.

He doesn't have the touch or quick thinking to be a playmaker. Kagawa is a class above him in those departments.

A good goal scorer, yes. Play him there!

Van Persie won us the title last season, Rooney sure as hell didn't.

Sublime management from Moyes, taking his most decisive attacking player, particularly in the important matches, and forcing him to play in central midfield. Outstanding. Einstein himself would be in awe of Moyes' genius.

We may have underestimated Rooney's loyalty, because there is no way any player with reasonable ambition would want to stay at this shambles of a football club.

He's lucky he wasn't brought off never mind moved back.

Yeah, John, I agree, only idiot would keep him on the pitch after those 60 minutes.
