You're right, he's been awful this season and we're in 6th because of him, or 2 years ago he most definitely didn't score 34 goals that season. Or the season before that he didn't lead us into the champions league final and score in it against Barca, or score in other big games against Chelsea a few times and against City to help us win the league. Or last season he didn't score twice in a 3-2 win against City. I must have imagined all of that, or dreamt it.

Chelsea: 7 goals in 13 appearances
Liverpool: 3 goals in 7 appearances

If you add in his contributions against the smaller teams in the knockout stage - Marseille, Schalke, Ajax and Athletic Bilbao (4 goals, 2 assists, 5 games) - you have a total of 39 goals and 6 assists in 65 games against the top sides and teams in the European knockouts. That's not a bad record.

How is it even possible to criticise Rooney's European record? He has a better knock out round record than anyone bar Ronaldo and Messi. He also spent a shit load of games on the left and right wing during Ronaldo's time here, where Rooney would almost be a second full back (and he still delivered ffs). And even in recent times he's played a deeper role behind the striker rather than as a number 9 like he did in the 09/10 season. How can you expect him to have a Raul or Ruud esque record when the majority of his games in Europe have not been in the striker position. His record is fecking exceptional for someone who doesn't play as the main striker. Name me wingers or players behind the striker who have a better record bar the top two.
Should we ignore the 20 assists that he provided in that tournament, as well as the 250 G+A for the premier league? Yeah, why not.

Rooney was actually immense in the 2011 title run in. Remember that hat trick against West Ham to drag us from behind and that goal against City? Nani and Berbatov kept us in the race until January, and Rooney saw us to the title, and a CL final.
The deal was about more than keeping a top player who would be hard to replace, especially under our current situation. It's a deal that makes a statement to other top players when we come calling in the summer.

Fergie has almost always been soft on his best players, including Rooney when signed his previous contract, lest you forget...Additionally, if Fergie found himself in a position like Moyes does (potentially losing many of his best players), he'd have done the exact same thing.
This point about Utd winning nothing when Rooney played as a striker thus him as a striker is basically pointless for the club is getting fecking annoying now. I've heard a few people go on about that and it is absolutely ridiculous. People just try and look for anything they can to discredit someone even when it is just a pointless statement. If these people had even looked a bit closer into things, the 09/10 season Rooney got injured right at the end and missed out on the crunch match against Chelsea and we lost out on the league by one point because the team wasn't good enough in his absence. It's not Rooney's fault that we didn't have another world class attacker, unfortunately Berbatov couldn't step up at the end. In contrast, last year we added RVP to the team who was excellent but when he didn't score for 10 games, who was there to step up and win us the games? Yeah it was Rooney. It is actually a credit to Rooney's performances that he could have won us the league in 09/10 had he not got injured playing in the the team he was in at the time.
The 11/12 season we lost by goal difference, bit crazy to blame your highest scorer for us losing out on goal difference. It's not Rooney's fault our players leading the line didn't finish as well as they should have. Neither is it Rooney's fault (who scored twice that day) that we conceded a few goals to Everton in the 4-4 draw. Again, Rooney was the only world class attacker in our team during that season. The team that Ronaldo was in had much better players and had Rooney himself supporting him, and the team RVP had last season had Rooney to step in when he had his goal drought. Rooney never had another world class attacker supporting him during the 09/10 and 11/12 season, again it is actually a credit to him that he scored so many goals and got us a point or goal difference away.
And that's not to mention that he was our best attacker in the 08/09 season, scoring 20 goals from the left wing and also setting up goals AND protecting his full backs in CL and big games. He was also our joint top scorer in the 06/07 season and our highest scorer from open play when we won the league, so doesn't that kill that argument? Ronaldo was obviously better than him that season but Rooney was indeed our joint top scorer and top scorer from open play during a league title win.

Rooney scored in just 2 of those 10 game Van Persie 'barren spell' in which United actually won. Norwich at home,(Kagawa hatrick) and Reading at home. That Van Persie 'barren spell', United went out of 2 cup competitions.

The point is, Rooney also made big contributions when we needed someone else to step up. 3-2 away at the Etihad, Rooney scored the first two goals. 4-3 win at Reading away, 2 goals and an assist for Rooney, pretty damn important contribution for us to win that match. Southampton we beat 2-1, both goals from Rooney. Reading 1-0 at home, only goal was from Rooney. Fulham 1-0 away, Rooney again won that for us late on when we struggled to score. 2 assists and a goal against Norwich. The point still stands that RVP had another top player in the team in a supporting role. Rooney didn't have another top attacker in the 09/10 and 11/12 season, we completely fell apart when he got injured in the 09/10 season.

Up until two seasons ago Rooney was actually ahead with 14 in 25 compared to Ronaldo's 13 in 25 but since then Rooney has obviously only started one match and did so out of position at the Bernabau.
There's also an asterix against a few of Rooney's 26 starts; games in which he's been asked to 'do a job' and also the home leg vs Bayern where he was clearly injured and only selected because he was carrying us at that stage (rather than the team carrying him as suggested).
