So in one word "money".

If I meant to use one word, I'd have used one word. I'm sure money (money for both United and the player) was a motivation, though not the only motivation. I'm entirely comfortable with that, and I'm not as naive as to believe that football players around Europe run out onto that pitch every week purely for 'love of club.'

That was true in 2010 and 2013. Yet he still handed in 2 tranfer requests.

Well technically he didn't. 2010 he just said he wasn't going to sign a new contract with us, to David Gill in private, Fergie made that public.

'13 he said he would consider his position, which he did without asking to leave.

No one is that naive these days. Just dont humiliate the club and the fans in the process. Or is that too much to ask these days.

I believe SAF over Rooney.

Can't doubt his obvious talent and contribution to United success. But I still don't like it that he's made United his bitch, and we simply accept it with both legs opened wide. Surely United should be better than this.

Double figures ten seasons in a row. Pretty good considering there's been a couple of bad seasons in there.

Before today Wayne Rooney had gone five successive league appearances without scoring or assisting a goal - his longest run since a seven-game spell in December 2011.

World class technique when he hit the ball for his goal. No doubt that he will be one of our most important players moving forwards into this transition period. Glad we have tied him down even though a lot of us have sour tastes in our mouths from his previous "indiscretions". Just happy that all this nonsense is over now and he will be at the club for the rest of his career (or at least at his peak).

..dear me the sexual imagery here is horrible...makes United seem like a grandmother...

With his future secured by this new contract he will definitely have a psychological comfort in returning to 'old Rooney days'.

Surgical composure in that goal, indeed.

Hope that goal will shut a few people up.
Amazing that even though he's been our best player this season that people still criticize him. A bunch of little girls is what they are because a guy tried to get a bit of a raise 4 years ago, and didn't get along with the old boss last season. Who really cares, as long as he's here delivering the goods what goes on behind closed doors. Certainly back in the day nobody cared at all about what they did off the pitch.

Lets see how he does against the big 5 or in the CL before you start bragging.
I'm not entirely sure if you're being serious right now....
Because if you are, then maybe you should educate yourself on Rooneys history in big games before trying to argue something.

Is that why SAF left him out of our biggest game of last season?

No that would be because he was coming back from an injury and was generally off all season. Rooney has almost always been a big game player. He has the occasional poor game, like everyone, but for the most part he stands out. He's also got a very good record in the champions league knockout stages over the years. Did you really forget everything he did for us the last 10 years?

You're spot on mate, I can't ever remember him scoring in those kind of games.
He only scores against lower division teams or relegation fodder

idiot poster, we have a weiner...

He's done f*** all for the last 3 years, so no I havent forgotten.

Some people talk out their spotty botty when it comes to Rooney. The second goal happened to be important today - the way our seasons gone it was a big goal. Irrespective of the opponants. Rooney is a big game player - he was Englands best player when he was 18 and got injured in that tournament. His goalscoring in the champions league is fine - including one in the final against barca. People criticizing him please come back and talk sense

If we had a midfield that could look after itself, we wouldn't see him sacrificing himself in deep areas where he won't effect the game as we want. He could do with scoring more against Liverpool and maybe Chelsea - not sure. His records fine though, he just needs support. Get him in more goal scoring areas and he'll get 25+ a season easy.

I wish. He hardly ever scores these days.

I don't understand it at all. For me he's always been our key player, even when people were overdoing the VP praise last season.

Him staying on is huge news.
And with Mata on board, even if VP decides to go, we'll be in good shape.

Rooney signing the new contract was lovely news for me, and the icing of the cake of it was seeing the likes of Ruud_boy_10 hating/seething

I LOVE IT.
