Fantastic news, never in doubt for me though in all honesty. Sticks one right up the muppet United fans that still try to claim he doesn't give a shit about United.

Absolutely. In signing his new £300k p/w deal, Rooney has shown he cares about the club.

Club ambassador  Beckham might have the charisma and intellect of a brick, but at least he's pretty to look at. Rooney has neither.

Assuming the figures are correct, we'd have about £80m less wage commitments, had we opted to sell him, this coming summer. At a guess, I'd say we could've gotten £25m for him, without much difficulty, so I see this as us choosing 5 more years of Wayne Rooney's services, over around £105m.

Considering his impact for us is not just on the pitch but also effects how attractive we are to sponsors (and to other players, as many have pointed out), I find it quite easy to believe this makes financial sense.

Still, he's an annoying twirp with a tendency to be disruptive, so I would not have minded if we'd gone the other route.

hope this is going to be the foundation towards building a new great team for the next few years to come.

apart from being 7th on the league table, the emergence of januzaj, the signing of mata and rooney committing are good stuffs from david moyes. now he just have to improve our league form and start ditching those jurassic park tactics.

i don't think we will get the 4th place, and the only way to be in the CL next season is by winning it this may, which is not impossible of course but with bayern, barca, real madrid and so on..you know what i mean here.

how we are going to attract top players coming this summer is going to be vital. i think most of the players can accept one season without CL football, as long as we are back and challenging for the tittle by next season. and we are going to have at least 3 or 4 big additions to the squad, maybe 5. rooney signing a new contract might help ed and david in convincing potential signings to join the club of course.

It is pretty silly to see the media going overboard about his salary and breaking it down into wages per day/hour/second.

He was already earning an absolute shitload, a bit more is not shocking, crazy or even as newsworthy as the coverage would suggest.

Not sillier than the people who buy those papers just to see about this or that footballer earns. Some people are honestly fecked up in their interest.

So if anyone tries claiming no one is bigger than the club, then they might get a punch in the face. i just don understand why we didnt try as hard to keep Cristiano Ronaldo.

Losing rooney would be worse than losing ronaldo, Fergie could have sold him straight away but rooney is vital. You have to factor in the whole package, not just determine who is more skillful.

Ronaldo simply wanted to play for Real...which was his dream since a boy.

Rooney is English...and there is no bigger club than United. He was only ever going to leave for more money if he ever....

Right. And which other club would have paid him £300k a week?

 We won our last two league titles when he contributed very very little. If we had sold him back in 2010 then we wouldn't have noticed. We could have used the money back then to sign suarez/aguero/cavani/falcao.... etc.

Neither?

It may have escaped your notice but Beckham has just bought his own football club. Unlikely to become an ambassador for a different one, is he?
Yes, Rooney has neither of the two things I referred to, is that even in question?

I know and I never said he would, just pointing out someone else who I think could have been a really good club ambassador.

Again, who else would pay rooney that kind of money when they could easily use it to sign suarez or falcao?

I expect if he'd moved this summer or last, he would not have been moving to take a pay cut. Chelsea may well have offered similar to £250k (inc. performance bonuses), which is what he will be earning here.

Chill out. Why are you so angry over this whole thing?
Im not angry. I wouldnt get angry over something as trivial as wayne rooney. But i am annoyed that a player who has contributed very little to our success over the past three years is being rewarded with a mega new contract and the captains armband. Would never have happened under SAF.

Well if thats true then they would have had to offer us £50m to sign him which the club would have accepted. I doubt any club would have offered wanye rooney today £300k a week.

As I said, Chelsea would probably have offered something broadly similar to the basic £250k wage (including bonuses) we are offering. There may not have been this elaborate image rights package included, which Mark Ogden says is unique in the Premier League, in his article.

Why would rooney stay at United if top of the table Chelsea under Mourinho wanted him? Love of the club

Fairly obviously, top of the table Chelsea were either unwilling or unable to make us an offer we couldn't refuse, and Rooney generally seems happy working under Moyes. Also, this image rights deal between Rooney and United could prove to be very lucrative, for both parties.

So in one word "money".
