Nani is a very good penalty-taker, but again, he's not guaranteed to be on the field, either.

He's missed a few now, most costly being last season (?) away to Fulham. Carricks the same, started off well taking them, lost confidence since.

Nani and Carrick have both been exceptional in shootouts, but both missed their only ever PL penalties. Hell, Carrick's so good he was designated as Ronaldo's replacement until he missed at Burnley.

Rooney's only missed one more than RVP this season. I really think people need to get it out of their heads that the Dutchman is a great penalty taker when he's not really any better than Wayne. Of course, Giggsy aside, there's not really any other choice to take over if Rooney doesn't want them, but still, don't think this means our wastefulness has been cured.

Pretty certain the Dutchman has about 10-15% higher conversion rate over his career than Rooney, therefore I'd say he is better than Rooney, for sure.

It's not that Rooney has been shit or that RvP is "the best penalty taker", the difference is very small, however Rooney's getting criticised for everything while RvP is still "flavour of the month" :).

Career penalty conversion stats:

Rooney 66%
RVP 79%

So it's not really a "flavour of the month" thing, it's just that RVP is a proven better penalty taker.

Bingo, cheers IAR.

That should settle it, for me. RVP is the best penalty taker who will always be in the team (barring rotation for rest), so he should take all our penalties.

Rooney's record is 69% and if van Persie were to keep up his record of one in two for us with his next two then he'd be on 2 goals more from the same number of penalties (26). That's not much of a difference at all. I do feel more confident with van Persie from the spot though.

Giggsy should take it, if he's on the field.

So even if RVP misses one of his next two, (why we would speculate at this I don't know), he'd still have a better record than Rooney but it'd be closer than it is now.... wow, thanks for explaining that Brwned, ground-breaking stuff.

Are you certain Rooney is 69% by the way? This article here has it at 17 from 28 which is even lower than I said.

No, I'm saying there's little difference between the two as it is and assuming he keeps up his record the difference will be negligible. Not certain at all I'm just using the stats posted on the previous page.

And why would he keep up his record of 50% when his career tells us it sits around 80%

Strange thing to predict. It's 17 in 28 for Rooney according to that article, that's an awful 60%. I think there's a big difference in that compared to RVP's near 80%. We can only go off what we know now, we can't predict the future, and right now, RVP is a much better penalty taker than Wayne Rooney.

I thought it was 18 for 26 wasn't it?

In any case Rooney's definitely not the #1 penalty taker, however I feel as if (and this is only my opinion) he's usualy spot on when the penalties are ones of great importance.

RvP has a better record than Rooney, however his record isn't exactly flawless either and there's not that much difference between the 2 of them, RvP is a better penalty taker, but the difference isn't as big as some on here like to make it out to be.

Not according to this:

Rooney off pens

True story.

The difference is 20%, that's pretty huge.

My opinion is this, RVP isn't a great penalty taker but he's good, and yes he's certainly not flawless. Rooney however is a poor penalty taker. Had he not got lucky and booted one of his standing foot, his record this season would have been diabolical.

Reminiscent of Ronaldo's goal versus Fulham a few years ago in the fact it came from the left-hand side with defenders backing off.

I hope it proves to be as significant in the title race as Ronnie's effort was.

He was very good today. Another crucial winner today.

coming to the boil nicely now.

Next 2 games could be season defining now

Magnificent today. Putting his body on the line in defence, and working tirelessly. Top class.

One of the best performances I can remember. Played really brilliant. Also his touch was exceptional today which isnt always the case. A Rooney in top form can be vital against Madrid

Brilliant all over the pitch. Great goal and was unlucky not to score more.

Great finish today. Match winner. Hopefully this is the start of a rich vein of form because we need him at his best if we're going to get through madrid.

Almost flawless I'd say, excellent all-round. Looks like he's bang in form at just the right time.

He was simply immense throughout the entire game today.
One hell of a performance, should've been an easier game this, but Rooney got us the 3 points in the end :)
good stuff, coming into form at the right time of the season.

If you want a laugh, please move back about two or three months through the Rooney threads on this forum. Same absolute whoppers summarily wrote him off. What a week he's had. Main man with RvP playing a quieter role. Heartbeat.

Good Rooney is back, and he should be fresh as hell for the rest of the season.
