Still our best player. Anyone wanting him gone are mad. He is crucial to us getting 4th this season and improving the team next season.

Calling him England's best player is a bit like being the least rapey bloke on the nonces wing!! As long as he carries on playing like he is and keeping his trap shut I'll happily see him stay. I've waited this long, I can wait 3 or 4 more years till he hangs up his boots if we get proper Rooney.

Being England's best player would still mean a huge amount to Chelsea who after this season could realistically have Gary Cahill as their English posterboy due to Terry, Lampard and Cole at the very last stages of their Chelsea careers. Gary Cahill.

Instead they can have England's best player in what should be the prime of his career. Having Rooney as the British face of Chelsea instead of Gary Cahill will allow them all kinds of oppertunities off the pitch to build the brand they've been working on for years. He's also a player who still has it in him to score 25 goals in the league. The combination of these things mean that it'd be a huge coup for Chelsea, even though I don't think it guarantees them winning the title like some were worried about in the summer. Despite still being one of the best players in the league, there are better and they could have more to say over a season than he does.

And yet RVP and then Rooney are our most offside players this season on average with Hernandez right behind them. Ashley Young and Fellaini somehow make up 4th and 5th

I don't understand your point, strikers drift offside....i'd be more concerned if vidic and evens were top

My point is that Rooney and RVP have been offside more often than Hernandez this season. Its accepted that Hernandez is always looking to be right on the edge of being offside due to pulling on the last man all the time hoping for the pass to release him. Thats his style. So its a surprise that Rooney and RVP are offside more often than he is. They aren't the same style of striker and usually take more care. Its also interesting that Welbeck is so far back on the list despite his goalscoring this season

To be fair, Hernandez' appearances this season have been very limited up until recently.

I am hopeful and optimistic he will stay.

A few big signings and a massive contract will keep him. He is the star player with little competition.

300k a week apparently according to the telegraph. Either a stroke of genius or complete madness. We'll find out in a few years I guess... It's an obscene amount of money.

Mark Ogden saying that Rooney is very close to signing a new 4yr deal.

I was just a little bit sick sick in my mouth.

How long's the extension? A year or two would be ok but £300k for 32 year is a bit excessive.

MPT you have finally shown your face again after the initial tease, although i'm a bit shaken by the fact you're putting faith in Owen.

It's a ridiculous amount of money, but it's probably what we'll have to pay him to keep him. If the article is true, at least the Glazers are showing they can and will pay top-dollar for the best players.

Given the issues we have, signing Rooney to a new deal would be a huge thing. It influences the players already here to stay and potential signings to come to the club.

Everything's far from rosy at the moment but if we get Rooney, RvP and Mata playing well I'll bet that they cover a multitude of sins elsewhere.

Who seriously gives a feck about what he's paid? Get him signed up.
I think people care because he's been in this sort of situation more than once and enabled himself to earn more money when the club is at a slightly weak point.

I'm not largely concerned myself, I'd be throwing captaincies, image rights and my bumhole to get him tied down for the rest of his best years.

My only doubt is that if it's come from the Rooney camp, I doubt Wayne has the Telegraph on speed-dial.

Obscene amount of money, but who cares. Tie him down, piss Chelsea off (sorry!), and steamroll everybody in the league with him+Mata+RVP. Win!

I know, i'm being a bit of a tit saying who gives a feck, but we are in such a precarious position at the moment that tying Rooney down is just sweet music to my ears. He has been a twat but I really don't care about Wayne Rooney the person... he is mustard on the pitch.

This day just keeps getting better. How funny is it that after everything people have said about him, all that's happened, there's a very real possibility he will retire here, be made club captain, finish as our all time top scorer and become a United legend.

True but 300k a week doesn't sit comfortably with me at all. I don't think Rooney is worth double the likes of Mata and RvP, almost up there with Ronaldo and Messi...It's all good if he continues his great form but a return to the Rooney of last year would be a massive waste of money and I wouldn't rule it out once he's got a new contract.

The whole Rooney contract talks and him wanting to stay thing originated in The Mirror a few days ago which is pretty likely to come from his camp in the first place.
Just like the Madrid rumours which ran in most English papers despite being clearly untrue a few days before that, and it only makes sense for the Rooney camp to leak them if he was in the process of negotiating a new deal. I'm convinced he's staying, have been for a few days now.

Ogden is reliable.

Not sure what he'll be like as a player at 33. But let's be honest it's basically a 3 year deal isn't it as we will revisit this when he gets to 31 anyway and maybe sell him then. It's great news anyway. What a day.

Don't like the bloke but when the other senior players have sulked and not shown responsibility, he's been running around like a maniac and making stuff happen.

If and when that happens, not a single soul on this earth would've remembered or thought sourly of him. All of it will be conveniently swept under the proverbial carpet. Hope he'll stay here for the rest of his career and score a bazillion goals the fat basterd.

That's the market, unfortunately. Also if he signs it and Vidic departs this summer I can see him being our captain. Moyes loves him.
