Hang on, reading your post again now Im lost. If we would still be selling Rooney for a cut price, what was the point in getting him to sign the contract in the first place?
Getting as much as possible for him doesn't mean we'll be getting as much as he's ever been worth. It means taking the highest thats being offered at the time, which has been bumped up a bit by having more than a season on his contract
If he signs a contract on the understanding we'll do a deal with Chelsea, we arent going to suddenly get £60 million for him, because Chelsea wont be outbidding several other clubs to land him and Rooney's camp wont be playing the clubs against each other to get the best deal. We'll just get more than we would have done for a player with a year on his deal.
Its just a piece of paper that binds him to the club unless a fee is agreed for another club to buy out the remainder of the contract. If the deal in principle is done, or the the destination of the player is decided before he even signs the contract, its not the same as having a happy player at a club with 4 years on his contract. In that scenario you would have to pay the full amount.
If the player wants to leave, signs a contract to help him leave (because he's doing what the club want to get as much money as possible) and isnt happy to stay at the club, then its a completely different situation. Thats why Chelsea would still be getting him at a figure they'll be more than happy to pay and wages wouldn't be a slight problem
In no scenario are we selling a Wayne Rooney who is happy to stay, with lots of years on his contract for the most money he could ever have been worth. Because if he was happy to stay we wouldnt be selling him in the first place.
