In the madness of today's market I'd like more than £25 million for Rooney. He's one of the most clinical strikers in the game, that shouldn't come cheap, especially if we're selling to that mob. Of course, our negotiation strength is weakened by the fact he has one year left on his deal.

I want him to stay of course, but a move aboard clearly is the best thing if he's as determined to leave as it seems. I don't like Madrid, but feck it I don't care as long as he's not rocking-up to OT every season dominating us and kissing whatever badge he has on his chest like he did at Goodison that time.

I was rather hoping Madrid bought Suarez tbh...

I was hoping this as well, I want that cnut out of the league completely asap - maybe PSG if we help them out with Cavani?

I just can't see the Rooney camp migrating to Spain. He is under the thumb with his missus after all the shite he put her through and I really can't see her wanting to take the young uns abroad. They'd be away from their families who they are apparently very close with and don't speak the language (can you imagine Wayne speaking Spanish!?).

I firmly believe that if we sign Mata, then Rooney will follow suit and commit to the club. We will pay him what he wants and they get to stay at home. He has won pretty much everything in the game at club level... all he wants now is that last fat contract.

Moyes will build our next team around this guy and he will break Bobby´s record! He aint going anywhere..

sorry if this is late but Times reporting it now

Real Madrid are weighing up a move for Wayne Rooney as Manchester United were locked in advanced talks with Chelsea last night to sign Juan Mata for £37 million.

José Mourinho, the Chelsea manager, is understood to have sanctioned Mata’s sale, with David Moyes willing to break United’s transfer record for the Spain playmaker in a bid to save their season from humiliation.

It's pretty clear he'll leave eventually, don't do that to yourself.

We've had news piece after news piece on Rooney's exit for a good four years now. No smoke without fire. Selling to Madrid would be good business for us.

But how would Times know about Madrid's transfer plans? They claim they'll try and sign Aguero then if it fails, Rooney.

I think Rooneys made the club aware he's not interested in signing another contract and that's why heading into next season he'll only have 12 months left, we couldn't afford to let him go last summer and only who we bring in now/the summer will determine if we let him go for a 'small' fee sooner or for nothing later

Of course he could very well change his kind and commit but right now I don't think he sees he long term future at the club

Bring Mata in. Sell Rooney to Madrid in a deal involving Coentrão and any one of their midfield players and we're sorted.

Full article from the times here people -

Real Madrid are weighing up a move for Wayne Rooney as Manchester United were locked in advanced talks with Chelsea last night to sign Juan Mata for £37 million.

José Mourinho, the Chelsea manager, is understood to have sanctioned Mata’s sale, with David Moyes willing to break United’s transfer record for the Spain playmaker in a bid to save their season from humiliation.

The clubs were thought to be haggling last night over the size and breakdown of the fee for Mata, with Chelsea holding out for about £40 million, but United are hopeful of being able to conclude a deal before the Barclays Premier League match at home to Cardiff City on Tuesday.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea’s willingness to offload Mata to the champions will improve their prospects of enticing Rooney from Old Trafford this summer, but The Times understands that Real will consider an approach for the United striker should they fail with an ambitious attempt to prise Sergio Agüero from Manchester City.

Agüero is contracted at the Etihad Stadium until June 2017 and City have no intention of selling their most prized asset.

Despite their reputation for transfer coups, Real are aware of the difficulties they would face in trying to lure the Argentina striker away and have identified Rooney, who enters the final 12 months of his contract this summer, and Radamel Falcao, the Colombia forward who is thought to be unsettled at Monaco, as more attainable targets.

Luis Suárez is the other option for Real, but, like Agüero, it would probably require a world-record fee to buy him and Liverpool remain determined to keep the Uruguay striker, who signed a new 4½-year contract last month tying him to Anfield until June 2018.

Mourinho is expected to make another move for Rooney after failing with two bids for the striker last summer, but in the event that United soften their stance over the player, the champions’ strong preference would be to sell overseas.

United had made signing a central midfielder a priority and have privately been insistent in recent weeks that they were not actively pursuing players who occupy the No 10 role.

Yet Mata’s availability coupled with Rooney and Robin van Persie’s continuing injury problems — neither is expected to return until the league game away to Stoke City a week on Saturday — and the club’s troubles on the pitch forced a rethink as Moyes bids to avert the growing threat of missing out on Champions League qualification.

Ed Woodward, the executive vice-chairman, had also said that United would react “opportunistically” if a leading player came on to their radar.

Talks over Mata are expected to continue today, Chelsea having demanded about £40 million for a player they bought for £23.5 million from Valencia in August 2011.

Such a deal would eclipse the club- record fee of £30.75 million that United paid to sign Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham Hotspur in 2008.

United are not interested in signing Dante, despite quotes attributed to the Bayern Munich defender yesterday claiming that the club did want to secure his services.

The sooner you lot accept he's off to Chelsea the better.

Colleen's probably begging for a move to London. Stretford's had it lined up for years. Rooney fancies it, clearly. He's running down his contract to pull this off.

Colleen's as cultured as a uncouth hippo, she'd blindly follow Wayne and the money. London wouldn't be anymore appealing to her than Manchester.

Well I don't imagine she wants to come to London for the Elgin Marbles, but it's always appealing. ITV2 will probably make a docu-drama about it.

My personal view is that this has been on the cards for years and it's finally about to happen.

Really? I think its the exact opposite, if we sign Mata I think Rooney is off. He's a perfect replacement though.

Like most, I've already accepted it too. In fact he was already gone in my mind during the Summer.

We had all the power back then. With 2 years on his contract we could pick and choose who we would listen to offers from. This Summer though, it's a totally different ball game. Still, we got the benefit of an extra year from him and he's been in fine form. I dread to think where we'd be had he gone. He'll move to Chelsea after giving us 10 years of mostly excellent service with my full blessing (not that he'll care).

Hopefully he won't hurt us too much when he leaves and that man-child body that Pete used to bang on about will finally catch up with him :smirk:

I think if we are in for Mata then we have been advised that Rooney will not be renewing his contract at the club.

If that's the case then there is two ways of looking at a potential deal.

Firstly it would be great forward thinking in signing a replacement so early on and allows us more time to sort the midfield options out in the summer without worrying about replacing our number 10.

On the other hand you could view it as a nothing transfer as it won't strengthen us it's simply replacing an outgoing player.

Would be brilliant if we keep Rooney but just can't see it.

What if Rooney was Chelsea was essential as part of any deal with Mata?
Dunno, selling Rooney to Chelsea wouldn't be catastrophic but I don't like the idea of selling to rivals. We got away with it with Tévez though, so who knows? When Rooney's in bad form he's fecking terrible, and I've no doubt he'd go through another shit patch whoever he joins.

We never owned Tevez so we didn't sell him to City - they simply bought him from the 3rd party owners.

I want Rooney to stay.

But if he goes.........then we should buy Barkley or Reus.

London or Manchester isn't important for her.......she's anyway at Barbados for 300 days of the year.

Sounds like more newspaper bollocks to me.

Real are more likely to chase down Suarez or Aguero, both are marginally better strikers than Rooney. Rooney and Co however, will be playing us for a juicy contract. This is probably Stretford mixing it.

Because of Wayne's build and the fact he's been a regular since sixteen I don't see him aging gracefully. If Madrid were interested I'd happily send him there in the summer. It'd finally put the whole sage to bed and we wouldn't strengthen Chelsea.

He's Van Persie-ing you. It'd be amusing if it wasn't so painful.
It wouldn't be painful in the least. We've had better players before, we'll have better players after. He's wanted to leave twice before so it's really not an issue. We have the quality or can add the quality to replace him easily.

The bigger negative would be strengthening Chelsea big time, and that would affect not just us but every other top side in the PL.

Mate it was a joke... Most of us have accepted that he's leaving..

Timing is everything with regards to Rooney's situation. Remember back to the summer, Chelsea were the only team to show interest and they didn't exactly break the bank to try to get him. Yes Rooney has had a good first half of the season (without being prolific in the scoring stats) and looks much improved on last seasons form. However, if the World Cup becomes his showcase he runs the risk of damaging his credibility with a poor showing in Brazil. Nothing tells me that he can excel in a weak England team at this summers WC.

So where would that leave him? If others don't come in for him in the summer his leverage with us gets diluted and the possibility of a contract extension, at the same terms as he is on today, into his 30's becomes hard to justify. If others do come in for him in the summer they will have to weigh up a 25M transfer fee plus wages of ~250K for an "older" 29 year old. This will not appeal to many. Lastly if we hold him to his contract then he begins negotiations with other clubs as a 30 year old in 2015. I don't believe there are many clubs willing to meet his salary expectations over a 3-5 year contract for a 30 year old Rooney.

Although it appears that he is holding the cards I believe that the club has a strong hand as well. If I am advising Rooney right now I am reminding him that a "bird in the hand is worth two in the bush". If Utd are currently offering a contract extension take it. If not he may find himself isolated without credible suitors that will match his salary expectations.
