So he was limping for a few seconds during training. It happens. Rooney to start against Fulham in the cup.

The idea that we don't need Rooney any more is nonsense. Right at the start of the season, when RVP was playing for us but Rooney was out with his first injury, we were seriously struggling, and playing our worst football of the season. When Rooney came back, at half time vs Spurs, it was the first real 'turning point' in our season.

You don't think our very mediocre form at the beginning of the season had more to do with Sir Alex's weird insistence of starting Scholes, Giggs, or Fletcher in most games and hardly playing Cleverley and Anderson. I personally think the biggest factor in our improved play has been pairing Cleverley with Carrick and using Anderson more when available.

I personally don't think much of our early season woes were downto Rooney being out at all. Rooney in top form obviously improves us though, don't think I'm trying to say he doesn't.

Yeah, that's hilarious tbf, but he looks like he is limping, but it doesn't look serious.

All Mike Phelan's fault

Isn't that always the scapegoat lately?
Though, that news feature video is retarded. If he's match fit, he'll probably make an appearance. Can't see any reason as to why he's not in good condition currently.

jeez....some people....
I wonder what'll happen once RvP gets injured or stops banging them in for fun, suddenly he'll become expendable, too old, waste of money and playing time, etc.
The "Sack Fergie, sell Giggs" thing might be a joke, but it's pretty close to the truth with some of you here.

Has anyone actually called him out to not being what he used to though?

Wasn't pleased with his performance early on but he gradually grew into the game and I'm glad he grabbed a goal today. Needed it for his confidence

Amazing how a player can go from being so shit to so good in 15 minutes. The difference in quality in his first and second half performances was staggering.

Finding his way back after his break, rusty early as in the last game but he's getting there.

To be fair, he was unlucky not to have a couple of goals in the first half - one tipped onto the bar and another saved point blank from close range. If that had been the case I think alot of people would have overlooked some of his sloppy passes.

Took his goal really well in the second half and had another disallowed which was a soft decision at best.

Was very good in the build-up to the third goal.

Brilliant goal, on another day he would have bagged an hat trick he was unlucky with some of his shots.

Loved his goal today and good signs he is on the way to some form.

His final ball at times was poor though

He needs to shoot more. He passed up 2 obvious attempts in the first 2 minutes today. And by shoot I mean putting his foot through the ball like for his goal, not those silly curling efforts.

Haven't saw that type of goal from Rooney for almost three years, the last one I remember was against Tottenham away.

Improved as the game went on, and was awfull in first half.

Missed a crucial one against Southampton years ago that put us out of the FA Cup. Didn't take another one then until the CL final in 2008 iirc

That was in 92. You could well be correct. But surely he has taken at least one pen inbetween then and the CL final?

first half nothing seemed to come off, second half better.

Hopefully Southampton on Wednesday continues the improvement, and he'll start cranking up a gear, as we'll need him by the time of the Madrid and Everton games.

I agree the signs are there, especially from that first half performance. Still, I've always been baffled as to why it seems to take Rooney more games than other comparable talents to return to his best form. During the first half some of his passes were woefully short and his touch was far less than delicate.

Rooney's top level is possibly higher than anyone else's in the Premier League but sometimes it feels he's taking longer to get there than Frodo did to get to Mordor. As I recall a miserable, crybaby, 'I want to go to Madrid', Cristiano Ronaldo was pretty much his old self it immediately after coming back from injury in 08/09: His touch, pace, power none of it vanished while his ankle was healing. Iniesta was also injured a lot last season and when he came back his game was likewise the same. Closer to home Wilshere didn't kick a ball for 18 months came back and dominated Reading in his first match back. Why is it that Rooney can't just click back into action like other top drawer talents?

PS) Should've had a second goal today. Clattenburg. That's my only comment.

This. Noted both those times in the match day thread. It was frustrating to say the least. He knows he's better than that.

Still looks a bit off the pace, but that's Rooney all over when he's been out for a bit.

Just given the November issue of 442, good article on Rooney. Very fair and balanced, pretty positive, wouldn't really dispute any of the opinion in there. It's funny though, I only ever really discuss him in here. The overriding feeling you're left with after reading the article is anticlimax and almost pity. It went through all the landmarks in his career, brought all the feelings of wild optimism back. He's already had a fantastic career and you'd hope there's lots more to come but personally, he's only got the 'best of the rest' to aim at, the possibility of being top of the pile is gone. Feels like that realisation, whenever it was made, maybe extinguished some sort of spark.

All just conjecture, of course and I'm still a big fan but I've been saddened by that little window of objectivity.

It's a shame Rooney never broke into that Ronaldo/Messi bracket given his talent, but I can't really say I'm disappointed with the level he's reached. Being up there with the Van Persie's, the Drogbas, the Agueros, etc throughout the whole of his career...not too bad at all. I think it's only when you size him up as a player in view of what he maybe could've been that there's a little disappointment. That goal yesterday, for example... he's got a lot more of that in him. Very much like the younger Rooney.

In 09/10 I personally believe only Messi was better than him that season (if we don't count the World Cup).

Second half of 10/11 he was right up there with the best. He's still got it in him to be right up there. He's all about being a team player though rather than individual glory and that's why he's so highly rated by managers.

What do you mean right up there ? As good as Messi and Ronaldo ? If so, that's some overrating
